this is really a cute little book for a toddler. My son is a year old & I read to him, even though he would rather pull at the pages. It is fun because of the little flaps that uncover the farm animal & the animal sounds you can make while reading the book. The pages are thick so a baby or toddler can't pull them out, or cut themselves on sharp pieces of paper (paper cuts do hurt!). I got this as my sons first book & he really does like sitting down with me to hear a story while he pulls at the pages, or tries to turn the page to see what is on the other side!I like that there are lots of colors in the book so i even get to teach my son what the color is, like the chicken is yellow or the kitten is orange. its a cute book & i'd recommend it other parents looking for something to read at bedtime or for story time.

It was smaller than my 2 year old's usual books but it was the perfect size to put in a bag when we go out. It keeps her busy when sitting down and traveling. This is perfect for little kids who likes animals and saying their different sounds. The quality is very good and does not easily get torn. It also has a good list of animals you would usually find in a barn(Cow, Pig, Chick, Pony, Duck, Goat, Dog, Cat, Rooster, Owl). It has great colorful illustrations. This is definitely a good value for the price. Totally worth it.

This is a great little board book. My nephew loves the smaller books that fit in his tiny hands and the peek-a-boo feature makes it even more exciting for him.

I purchased Open the Barn Door for my daughter’s first birthday. She is now approaching her second birthday and this book is still very much a favourite. The book is smaller than I was expecting (dimensions, as per Amazon are 9.9cm x 9.9cm), but this actually turned out to be a plus point as it’s great for throwing in the changing bag when we go out, or acting as a distraction in the car.The book is a lift-the-flap book and has lots of pages. Each page poses a question – for example ‘who says moo?’ and opening the flap will reveal the animal in question. This was a great tool for my daughter to learn the names of farm animals and the noises that they made.As this is a board book it is durable and despite having owned it for around a year and it having lots of use, our copy is still in remarkably good condition, with all the flaps still intact.I would strongly recommend this book, I don’t really have anything negative to say about it. I think it is perfect for little one’s aged one and over.

I was anticipating a larger board book- this is only 2 inches by 3 inches. Super small, so a plus for purses, diaper bags, etc. A bummer if its a gift as you want it to look a bit bigger than it really is. Content wise, it is cute and kids will love opening the flaps.

This book is little but it is adorable! My toddler likes to rip on the flaps of the flip books but this one is durable enough he has not ripped one off ... Yet ..... He LOVES animals and LOVES this book! It has been a big hit!

This is one of our daughters favorite books. Each page has a small flap that reveals an animal underneath. Each page says what the animal sound is "who say's moo?", then under the flap the animal is revealed. She received it as a gift at 6 months old and was able to play with it then, learning a bit of finger dexterity with trying to grab the flaps and turn the pages. But still loves it now at 18 months, though some of the flaps are a bit wrinkled and chewed on from playing with so young. She is a big fan of animal sounds so this was a big hit for that reason as well.

Children open the lift-the-flap barn doors to reveal "Who says moo?"/ "Who says baa? et cetera". A very cute, pocket-sized book with bright colorful, and not overly cartoony illustrations. Our ThoughtsThere are a lot of pages in this tiny book which is good. Its pretty sturdy, the flaps are a bit hard to do since they're so tiny but that deters tearing! I love the illustrations and thoughtful and unique flap for each animal (e.g. kittens are inside a basket, a goat stands behind a laundry line, a duck waits behind bulrushes). Its the perfect size both for little hands to read on their own, and to fit in my purse. I can whip it out while were standing on line in the supermarket or waiting to be served in a restaurant and read it to my son. He received it as a Christmas gift at 13 months old. At 18 months old, he enjoys this book a lot and can now open the flaps himself. He likes hearing me the animal noises and loves being surprised by what's waiting behind the door. As he has grown older I can now quiz him before we reveal the animal and he signs his answer. Recently I caught him reading it all by himself, so now, I give it to him to read on his own in the shopping cart thereby buying myself at least a few brief moments of cooperation! Great little book highly recommended! We actually lost this book during a an outing and I will definitely be replacing it as my son LOVES it!It's useful for teaching animal names, animals sounds and life on the farm.

I ordered "Open the Barn Door" in addition to several other books for a baby shower. However, when it arrived it was so tiny (around 3") that I ordered another book in it's place, for the shower. I realize that it was my fault for not looking closely enough at the product's dimensions. Instead of returning the book I gave it to my two year old son. At the time he received this book he was really into farm animals. However, he never really showed much interest in this book. We've now had it approximately 10 months and he has only read it about a dozen times. I think his lack of interest in this book is because a) it's so small and b) it's really hard for him to lift the flaps in the book. The book is actually very cute, but he gets so frustrated with the flaps that he doesn't want to read it.

Review

“A powerful and exquisite love story” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Reminiscent of the kinds of fantasy books I loved when I was a young teenager, tales of princess angst, horses, and the blossoming of reluctant love. This book is bold enough to create a world that moves beyond the prejudices we are still fighting in our real world.” (Caitlyn Paxson, NPR)“A deeply romantic, bold, and nuanced fantasy. You will be captivated by Denna and Mare and their star-crossed love for each other.” (Malinda Lo, Author of Ash and Huntress)“Lovely…a worthy debut that succeeds as both an adventure and a romance.” (Booklist)“Murder, mayhem, magic, romance-and horses…a romantic fantasy that will appeal to those who appreciate character-driven novels.” (Kirkus Reviews)“I devoured Of Fire and Stars in two sittings; it’s a delightful debut, full of all the things I like best in a fantasy story, including not one but two wonderful heroines. I’m looking forward to seeing what Audrey does in the future!” (Mercedes Lackey, New York Times bestselling author of over 125 books, including the Valdemar series)“Coulthursts’s debut is an absolute delight; I loved seeing these smart, fierce princesses fall in captivating, slow-burn love as they investigate political assassinations and unravel magical conspiracies.” (Corinne Duyvis, author of Otherbound and On the Edge of Gone)“Romantic, compelling, and bursting with fascinating characters, Of Fire and Stars is the fantasy novel we’ve all been waiting for.” (Amy Tintera, author of Ruined)“A slow-burn love story about two unique, brave, and endearing young women.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))

This is my first ever Amazon review, but I couldn't stand not writing one for this book! I am a voracious fantasy reader, and will read almost ANYTHING involving magic, other worlds, and political intrigue. I am also a member of the LGBT community, and it is very, very hard to find decent fantasy books with LGBT characters to relate to. This book was everything that I have been searching for for 21 years! The story pulls you right in. I started it at 10 pm and finished it at 2 am. I couldn't bring myself to put it down. I sincerely hope to see more from this author.

So, the book just came out today, I thought to read the first chapter or three. Eight hours later I finished my 'quick preview'.The book was a little slow starting but meticulously researched and with characters that grew on you.The mystery reveal was barely telegraphed, but looking back was quite apparent.Nicely done.No little flowers of princesses here. We are led to slowly meet and learn the major characters, and by the end, they are dear friends of ours, and I am saddened to see them go.400 pages, devoured cover to cover, and wouldn't be upset to see more.Thank you.

Of Fire and Stars was a very interesting book to read. Our heroines Denna and Mare split the Pov's throughout the book and are very distinct characters. Denna is a Princess who is forced to marry Mare's brother in order for their lands to form an alliance. It's a very strenuous alliance, due to the fact that many in Mare's land oppose the union with Denna. It sounds like your typical book of war, love, and betrayal. What sets this book apart are the heroines themselves. They wind up falling in love--- with each other. Before I move forward, here's the synopsis below:An atmospheric and romantic debut fantasy perfect for fans of Ash and The Winner’s Curse.Betrothed since childhood to the prince of Mynaria, Princess Dennaleia has always known what her future holds. Her marriage will seal the alliance between Mynaria and her homeland, protecting her people from other hostile kingdoms. But Denna has a secret. She possesses an Affinity for fire—a dangerous gift for the future queen of a land where magic is forbidden. Now Denna has to learn the ways of her new kingdom while trying to hide her growing magic. To make matters worse, she must learn to ride Mynaria’s formidable warhorses before her coronation—and her teacher is the person who intimidates her most, the prickly and unconventional Princess Amaranthine, sister of her betrothed. When a shocking assassination leaves the kingdom reeling, Mare and Denna reluctantly join forces to search for the culprit. As the two work together, they discover there is more to one another than they thought—and soon their friendship is threatening to blossom into something more. But with dangerous conflict brewing that makes the alliance more important than ever, acting on their feelings could be deadly. Forced to choose between their duty and their hearts, Mare and Denna must find a way to save their kingdoms—and each other.Denna harbors a secret that could get her killed and ruin the already strenuous alliance with the kingdom she's marrying into. She can control fire. Magic is banned in Denna's new world, and those around her would see it as treason if she were to ever reveal her power. Things get more complicated for Denna when she realizes her power is growing, which begins to spiral out of control. Along the way Denna who is the embodiment of courtly life and grace, meets Mare who is the black sheep of her royal family. She is crass, rough around the edges, and has a spitfire tongue. She's also not conventionally pretty. All of this does not stop love from blossoming between the two women. It was refreshing to see two prominent heroines fall in love with each other. It showed a progressiveness that we don't often find in literature, even though we should. I never take gay characters for granted, because I personally identify as gay, and I love to see how the gay perspective is transformed through story telling. I value reading about the struggle of my people and how they can become triumphant. It gives me hope.I will say that the first third of the book was very slow. I'll also admit that I didn't love Denna at first. She seemed very frivolous and completely at the mercy of her emotions. Overtime she grew on me. I think that's in part by her love for Mare. I fell in love with Denna through the eyes of Mare. Mare showed me the qualities I was overseeing in Denna. It was invigorating to have a character's pov change my perspective on another character. I've never had that happen before. The action in the book wasn't in abundance, another small gripe that I had. I often felt like the love between the two women was too much at the forefront, even if it felt more like a timid cat & mouse game for most of the book.On the romance alone and the themes it's promoting, I'm happily looking forward to a sequel. If you love passionate characters, gay lovers, and war & betrayal, you will love this book

In this tale, a smart, nerdy, somewhat introverted princess married off to a foreign prince finds herself falling for the tomboyish, somewhat rebellious sister of her betrothed. There is action, intrigue, and adventure, with a lot of the subplots you'd expect from a fairy tale about nobles in a pseudo-medieval world, but with the subversion of a lot of tropes, too. The story also explores how one defines one's culture, religion, duty, and sense of self, which was interesting and thought-provoking.There is relatively little problem with any character being interested in a member of the same-sex (with perhaps one exception), but instead there is a lot of discrimination against people born with magic skills. With the issues faced by magic users in the story, the author successfully weaves a parallel to the discrimination many LGBTQIA+ people face in the real world, past and present, but without being too "in your face" about it.I really enjoyed the development of the two main characters, as individuals and as a couple. I also want to applaud the author for crafting a beautiful platonic friendship between one of the leading ladies and an ex-boyfriend, which is something you don't see very often in these kinds of books.
