I will likely be back to write a more in-depth review. I am studying to be a Therapist, particularly a Child Therapist. I love the concept of these jars that can be used over and over again, as needed for therapy, and, to help the child feel in charge. Our own child has struggled with some Neurological and Mental Health related problems, and, is currently aged 10; (this problem 'being bullied', required some help, and, action, so I purchased these). This seems to be a very good item for helping children feel like they are able to better take charge of bullying. The cards provide tips and ideas for handling the bullies, and, at the same time, are designed that he/she can play a game(s) with them. You pick out a card, and, some you talk about, or, act out. It allows the child to come up with solutions, and, share their thoughts, and, learn to take action, when it is needed. This has become a particularly growing issue, for our child, 'bullying', lately, in the classroom and, on the bus, since grade 4, now, in grade 5.Our child isn't the only one affected either, friends of ours, with similar aged children, and, a bit older and younger, especially have had a lot of ongoing issues, for them, grow out of the bully or mean behavior of other kids at this age. It is important to show them you can do something to help. Kids do not need to have issues necessarily to participate in this game, so friends can play together, and, it is actually quite fun!

I'm a mental health counselor who works with many children. These cards are a great help to me. The kids love them. I spread the cards out in a circle. Kids throw a dice and move a marker to a space. They read the card they land on and answer the question. It's a lot of fun and promotes helpful discussion. I also add anger and other topic cards to the game.

Come in a cute presentation. Good cards and ideas but not a game. Ideas suggested for play are simplistic. Hard to engage kids in using this. Looks better then it is. There are much better books, games and cards out there.

Gave as a gift, was well liked

I love using these with my middle school students.

I find this helpful for my clients who have been bullied. It allows the conversation to start or pick up if someone is feeling hesitant expressing themselves.

This is yet another clever way to help students identify and solve bullying problems. Very engaging and students enjoy their participation.

I love these little jars! They are really helpful for students to practice appropriate social skills, and they are really fun for them as well. I use them frequently with students who have social/emotional needs.

Four year old Ellen is taken from her bed by a stranger in the middle of the night, when her mother Nicole receives a package containing four phials, one of them supposedly poisonous with a note telling her to choose a phial to drink in exchange for information of where her daughter is being kept captive, she knows the nightmare of what her husband did in the past, is about to become a reality. The kidnapper claims to be Luka Volkov, but Luka is assumed dead, killed in a tragic fire with his mother many years ago, or is he? Could he have survived the fire and is back to exact revenge on those who wronged him?DI Amy Winter and her team are brought in to investigate the case and, having suffered trauma as a child herself, she is determined to bring Ellen home and for it to be a happy ending for the Curtis family, but Luka is not going to make it easy for her and when another child disappears she knows they are in a race against time to save these children. This is the second in this series and is just as tense and nailbiting as the first. Once again the story alternates between past and present and kept me guessing all the way through, it's packed full of twists and Lillian, Amy's sadistic birth mother is always there lurking in the background ready to cause more problems for her daughter. I was hooked from beginning to end with this one and the ending leaves it open perfectly for another book in this incredible series. Bring it on Mrs Mitchell!! I highly recommend that you read these books in order to get a true understanding of the characters and their backgrounds.

Recently, DI Amy Winter has had a very bad, awful, no good time of it. Her beloved father has died. Amy then found he was her adoptive dad, and that she was the child of Britain’s most notorious serial killers; Jack and Lillian Grimes, the Beasts of Brentwood. To add to her joy, her finance cheated on her the day before the wedding. He then aids her jailed mother in further tearing her life apart. To add to the fun, some planted evidence in the Beasts case may help free Lillian. Her birth family being rediscovered, with one exception is another nightmare. In The Secret Child Amy can only feel life is looking up when Dr Hugh and Nicole Curtis’s four year old child, Ellen, is kidnapped. This is what Amy does. She finds people, she handles high profile murders. She has always thought she had an affinity for the darkness of others. Now she knows why and she decides to fully embrace her former self, four year old Poppy Grimes, to keep others from suffering. The story is told in alternating time-lines, the recent story of the kidnapping, then the older story of the thought-to-be dead kidnapper, Luka Volkov losing of his soul, as a victim of Dr Curtis and others.A second child, Toby, is taken. Wheel-chair bound Toby is the son of a former employee of Dr Curtis at his facility where Luka spent time as a child.Concerning the second child, a star is being deducted because there is a huge information gap. Amy suddenly has knowledge of the second kidnapping without any clue to the reader of how she gained this knowledge. A child being taken would garner a huge amount attention, but nothing is said about this. Just suddenly Amy asks to speak to Toby in a phone call from the kidnapper. I reread this section of the book several times, and consulted with another reviewer. Nope, no explanation.Mitchell develops especially inventive plot lines, dealing with grotesqueries we would rather not confront. Using a four year old child as bait to commit psycho sexual murders? Check. (view spoiler) Giving parents the choice of drinking poison to save their child? Check. Oh yeah, Mitchell can do it all.The Secret Child is all about the story, not so much the characters, although the villains are terrific. Amy is a prickly pear, pushing friends away; she might pay for this in the next book.

I love Caroline Mitchell, but I’m late to the DI Amy Winter party. This is the second book in the series and my first, but the author does a great job of recapping the events in the first volume, so that I didn’t feel like I was missing any backstory. Likewise, the characters are so well defined, that I never felt like I needed more context and their dynamics were clear enough. Amy is the daughter of serial killers to, understandably, she is damaged. It’s a good thing that she has a support network that helped her become who she is… a great police officer. This case involves missing children, something that touches Amy deeply. But the kid’s parents are clearly hiding something and Amy needs to figure out what it is before she can find them. The chase to find them in time is so suspenseful that I couldn’t stop reading. The twists are unpredictable, which makes the book addictive. Ms. Mitchell has added another great heroine to the pantheon of tough female detectives.I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, NetGalley/Amazon Publishing UK!

Love this series! Love DI Amy Winter!I was hooked with "Truth and Lies", the first in this series and couldn't wait to read "The Secret Child". Caroline Mitchell does not disappoint in this second installment featuring DI Amy Winter! I do highly suggest you read the first one first as there is so much background given on Amy that I feel cannot be missed! The daughter of the notorious serial killers known as the "The Beasts of Brentwood", just how much did Amy witness when she was a child, how does it affect her today? This series is addictive and intriguing!4 year old Ellen is kidnapped from her own home. Someone is seeking revenge. Treated like lab rats, Dr. Curtis shows no empathy towards the children he uses in his experiments and drug trials. 30 years later, he now has a child of his own. Childhood trauma, I think Amy can relate to this one! Amy will do everything in her power to save Ellen.5 stars! Lilian adds to the intrigue of this series playing her mind games from jail while trying to get an appeal. What will happen if she is released?! Consider me fully hooked! Page turner, well written, full of suspense, cannot wait for the next one!A huge thank you to Amazon Publishing and NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book!

Duncan Grant: A Biography, by Frances Spalding

From Publishers Weekly

Biographer of Bloomsbury luminaries Vanessa Bell and Roger Fry, British art historian Spalding has produced a captivating biography of another key Bloomsbury figure, post-impressionist painter and designer Duncan Grant (1885-1978). Born in the Scottish Highlands and raised in India until he moved to London at age 14, Grant emerges as a mercurial, impractical, often histrionic and jealous man, who was also endearingly down-to-earth and indifferent to fame, and who hobnobbed with people at all levels of society, always eager to partake of new experiences. Drawing on a trove of Grant's unpublished memoirs, letters and diaries, Spalding candidly illuminates Grant's complex private life, from his relationship with painter Vanessa Bell (Virginia Woolfe's sister), with whom he had a daughter, Angelica, in 1918, to his numerous affairs with such men as Lytton Strachey (his cousin), John Maynard Keynes and literary critic David Garnett. In 1942, young Angelica married Grant's ex-lover Garnett, adding yet another twist to the Bloomsburies' ever-changing musical chairs of sexual and romantic partnerships. Enlivened by photographs and art reproductions (including eight color plates), this engagingly gossipy biography scans Grant's entire oeuvre, from portraits, landscapes and mythological scenes to erotic art, ceramics, costume and set design. Meticulously documenting Grant's daily doings, his travels from Seville to Cyprus, and his encounters with everyone from E.M. Forster to Andre Gide and D.H. Lawrence, Spalding vibrantly conveys the texture of the Bloomsbury group's emotional and creative life. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews

A full-bodied but strangely affectless biography of the minor English painter and decorative artist. As the Bloomsbury industry continues to expand, its rapidly running up against the law of diminishing returns. With superior, if not definitive, b iographies already in place for all the major figures, only the secondary and tertiary characters are leftthough as second-raters go, Grant is near the top of the pile. But his mild artistic abilities will always be overshadowed by whom he knew and whom h e slept with. Having already written a biography of Grants fellow painter and lover, Virginia Woolfs sister, Vanessa Bell (1983), Spalding is well qualified to delve into the emotional complexities of Grants life. Drawing on letters and diaries, she detai ls his affairs with the leading men of Bloomsbury, from Maynard Keynes to Lytton Strachey to Vanessa Bells brother Adrian Stephen, but the love of his life was Bell. Despite his homosexuality and ongoing affairs and her marriage, they set up house togethe r and had a daughterwho eventually went on to marry one of Grants former lovers, David Garnett. Such polymorphousness has long attracted biographers to Bloomsbury, but Spalding also spends a judicious amount of time on Grants art. She believes that log-ro lling praise from intimates such as Roger Fry and Kenneth Clark, paradoxically, was largely responsible for Grants reputation plummeting in his later years. Unquestionably, Grant was a decent copyist and a reasonable colorist with a good sense of line and form, but his style tended to ebb and flow with whatever was in vogue at the time, so that it is hard to pin down anything in his work as definitively ``Duncan Grant.'' Spaldings biography suffers from a similar problem. Though she has all the facts, she is never quite able to capture the essence of the man. The only thing missing from these hundreds of exhaustively researched pages is Duncan Grant. (8 pages color, 16 pages b&w illustrations) -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. Dependable seller. Book quality as described. Would buy from this seller again.

Marvellous, Spalding's skill is to sketch out the intricate emotional web against the bright bold untouchable figure of the artist. Her achievement is to let that sense of a man living with a craft shine through on every page: the result in an exceptionally honest and warm portrait. Her tone is objective but sympathetic and generous. This biography accomplishes what is, or should be, the biographer's highest goal: it does not come between the reader and the subject.

Love Duncan and Vanessa. I want their life.

Ori Brafman has set a high bar for himself with the quality presented in his previous works, so that standard weighs heavy for experienced readers of his books. I have looked forward to reading Radical Inclusion since I first heard it was in the works. This volume does not disappoint! General Dempsey's writing--paved with anecdotes and stories from his over 40 years experience in the military add rhythm to the pace of the book as well as solid teachable moments throughout. The lessons? I'll let you read and find for yourself. But I will say they are important lessons to say the least. If we ever needed to hear the message of this book we need it now. If you are a leader, at any level, for a business, non profit, or whatever--you will glean wisdom and knowledge from Dempsey and Brafman.

I love this! Radical Inclusion is going to be the leadership book for today's sharing economy. I have long wondered how is it that we can increasingly jump into the personal car of a complete stranger and yet seem to increasingly distrust established organizations and today's leaders? How is it that as our access to information dramatically increases, our views appear to become more narrow? In reading General Martin Dempsey's and Ori Brafman's chapter on the digital echo, I felt I finally had the language and a tool kit to be able to think about how and why we seem to be experiencing a time of such radical polarization -- a time when it appears we have lost our ability to converse calmly, debate rationally, listen empathetically and hear divergent points of view. For example, while talking about the "fog of war," Dempsey and Brafman present us with a powerful question: "What if the fog not only denied you access to the facts, but actually convinced you of the validity of erroneous data?" They go on to write that they predict "there soon will come a time when, despite using all the resources available to us, we will simply not be able to tell what is actually true."Unfortunately, I am afraid they are right. I worry that in this age of highly filtered, information overload, we are losing (or have already lost) our ability to research unbiased information and expand rather than narrow our world views. Radical Inclusion seems to me to have as good of a chance as any at reversing these alarming trends. Now that's writing worth reading. Thank you both!"As the digital echo spreads, as complex issues multiply, as uncertainty increases, as technology exponentially changes, and as risk rises, it seems reasonable that we should seek to lead by sharing our challenges rather than owning them outright," -- Martin Dempsey and Ori Brafman, Radical Inclusion: What the Post-9/11 World Should Have Taught Us about Leadership.

as someone who served as a CEO for 25 years, I wish I had this book to ready at the outset of my career. It is an easy read with a valuable framework, lots of insights and good stories. Read it over a weekend. After reading the book I was fortunate to interview General Dempsey in front of nearly 100 CEOs, and he is thoughtful, articulate and not at alll what i would have expected in four star general before I read the book. it was an inspiring evening. Not a feel good book or a work of political correctness at all. And its message and observations are extremely timely in this time of social media and polarization of views around opposing narratives instead of fact. It is of broad application for anyone with any leadership responsibility, whether at work, at home with the family, or in the community. Pretty amazing that the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (retired in Sept 2015) has had a decades long relationship with a tofu eating, Israeli born, adjunct prof at Cal Berkeley who specialized in peace studies but you'll need to read the book to find out why.

Overall, this is a great book on an effective leadership principle. The authors, General Dempsey and Mr. Brafman, separate the book into four main parts. The first two parts provide a description of today’s operational environment and the effectiveness of being inclusive. Part three is the main section which focuses on the leadership aspects of inclusiveness. Part four ties everything together.Of note is that the authors refer to another book by Mr. Brafman titled, The Spider and the Starfish. The leadership principles described here have a foundation in Mr. Brafman’s previous book and are supported by examples from General Dempsey’s career. For example, he describes a meeting with a Captain at a forward operating base in Afghanistan. The captain argues that the US military needs to adapt its fighting objectives to more effectively combat decentralized organizations like the Taliban. Decentralized organizations are resilient because they are inherently inclusive. The Captain then makes reference to the author’s successful use of inclusiveness in a previous legal fight with McDonalds over veganism.Bottom line: The authors did an excellent job of describing the effectiveness of being inclusive. It is a leadership principle that every manager should practice. The book is a quick read at only 176 pages and anyone who is a leader, will get something from it.

I started reading this book on a Friday afternoon, and finished it a few hours later. I didn't want to put the book down, and all of the passages in it about leadership, emotions, neuroscience, and collective decision making were so relevant and meaningful.

General Dempsey and Professor Brafman peal back the onion of leadership in the 21st Century. The book is an extremely interesting read, as well as being instructive and insightful about leadership challenges in the 21st Century. Should be mandatory reading for all who strive to be great leaders in any field.

Leading people and organizations in an era of competing digital narratives is one of the key challenges to creating an environment of success and action . Radical Inclusion offers insights and examples of when and how becoming more inclusive leads to increased success, effective use of power, and greater dedication to goal accomplishment
