Worth is amazing. Great reporting, great storytelling. A true example of literary journalism at its best.Small quibble: the book picks up at the start of the Arab Spring without giving a lot of details as to what caused it in the first place. Oh, sure, there were lots of people being repressed etc. but, you know, nobody complained before the downturn of the Middle Eastern economy. Start with the price of oil. We think it's repressive regimes versus Islamic fundamentalists and greater and greater factionalism, but these are symptoms. The area is an economic disaster. Petitt's book, "The Crucible of Global War: and the Sequence that is Leading back to It," covers this nicely in the chapter on the Middle East.Again, small quibble. I don't think it was Worth's intention to uncover the reasons so much as report on the effects. And in that, this book is priceless.

Historians are fond of advancing the notion that no major event in human affairs can be fully understood until many years later, when the major actors have passed from the scene and long-suppressed archival records finally come to light. Journalists sometimes dispute this contention, citing their eyewitness accounts and face-to-face interviews with players large and small. Though I’m fond of history and read a good deal of it, I’m sometimes tempted to side with the journalists, if only because contemporary conditions may be best understood by contemporaries. Robert F. Worth’s new postmortem on the Arab Spring, A Rage for Order, is a case in point.The Arab Spring and the disorder it spawnedShifting from Tunisia to Egypt to Libya, Syria, and Yemen, Worth’s account of developments in the Middle East beginning in 2011 introduces us to a series of fascinating individuals whose stories illustrate the intimate realities that together comprise what we sum up in shorthand as the “Arab Spring.” It’s a finely textured portrait of the region, and profoundly sad.In A Rage for Order, you’ll meet two Syrian women, one Sunni, the other Alawite. Close friends in their youth, they gradually grow apart under the pressures of the increasingly violent civil war. Worth sees the tragedy here and elsewhere in the region, explaining “that this great battle between Sunni and Shiite was really just a cynical power struggle between the region’s two biggest oil producers, Saudi Arabia and Iran, who fed their people sectarian slogans the way you might feed amphetamines to a tired boxer.”You’ll also meet the two remarkable old men, bitter enemies for decades in the turbulent opposition politics of Tunisia, who swallow their differences to force a moderate compromise on their followers, ensuring peace for their nation. It's hard to say that you actually "like" this book, since it's so depressing. We've read 5 or 6 books in the last year or so on the Middle East, for my book club, and they're all pretty depressing, but this one especially. This book focuses on individual relationships within the overall "Arab Spring" timeframe -- two close friends who grew up together in Syria, close relationships formed within the promise of Tahrir Square, etc. He describes the relationships before, during and after the Arab Spring events; in each case, where there were early strong bonds (as in the case of the Syrian friends), or where bonds developed during the street events, these bonds devolved into partisanship, sectarianism, and downright hatred, to the extent that former "friends" were often fighting each other.The one thing that comes out clearly in this book (as in other recent books on the Middle East) is that these hatreds, whether derived from tribalism or religious sectarianism, are way beyond our understanding and ability to influence (other than negatively). The idea of bringing our sort of democracy to this part of the world is both naïve and counter-productive.The book is well-written and researched -- it's clear that the author has spent a lot of time in these countries and spends a lot of it on the street, in cafes and in general, learning to know the people.

A gripping book about the Arab Spring and its aftermath, illustrating these regional dynamics through the lives of individuals. The main impressions I'm left with are (1) that the region is a quite a mess, not because of the citizens but because of the way the citizens are buffeted and brutalized by forces beyond their control, (2) the U.S. makes it messier no matter what we do, and we can't make it better by the way we've been going under Bush, Obama, or anything on offer right now. Wish I knew what the answer was.

I read this book because I wanted to try to understand the birth of ISIS and what has happened in the Arab and Muslim world, post 9-11. It's an engaging read. The author spent a lot of time there on the ground, and he presents a good explanation of tensions and events, country-by-country. My verdict after reading this: it's complicated, violent mess and our mucking around there will only make it worse.(One minor note: in a chronology at the end of the book, he clings to the narrative that the Benghazi attack was due to an offensive video. I think that theory has been pretty well debunked. Minor blemish on the book, though.)

It started out great, but then it seemed repetitive or the comments by other players that faced Mariano were forced to say something to get their name in the book.

superb descriptions of a great one

Very honest humble information about his life. Great message on forgiveness , which I learned from. Very inspiring to read how he formed his inner moral code at a young age. Followed him thru his career.

There's no question that Mariano Rivera ranks among the all-time Yankee greats. But he's more than that. He was the very best player at his position. Of all time. So even fans with an allegiance to other baseball teams will really enjoy this book. The editor of this book seems to have talked to everyone in order to compile a rich portrait of an athlete at the very top of his game. (Would that we had a similar record for, say, Babe Ruth, Sandy Koufax, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and other Hall of Famers.) As David Fischer writes in the introduction, "Twelve people have walked on the moon. But only eleven scored an earned run off Rivera in the postseason."Conventional sports biographies are fine. This book goes them one better and tells the reader, in the words of the players who faced him, why "Mo" was so great. Bravo, Mr. Fischer. And bravo, Mariano Rivera!

My daughter's love this cookbook for their oven, and I asked them on their opinion before I left this review. I don't believe there are pictures, but it has many good recipes, both sweet and savory, and so far they have all turned out great. Also, it is a real money saver , as you won't have to buy those overpriced mixes. There is even instructions on using a regular grocery store $1 cake mix for numerous cakes. I highly recommend it if your kids have an easy bake type oven!

I have the print edition of this book and also Tiny Bites: Scratch Recipes for the Toy Oven. This one has more recipes but Tiny Bites has color photographs of each recipe. That might not matter for the Kindle edition, but my grandchildren like Tiny Bites more. There are even recipes for bread and pizza crust with yeast that worked well. Tiny Bites is more expensive, probably because of the color illustrations, but I recommend that one. Also, it has recipes for both the new ovens and the old light bulb ones.

I like how the recipes are written in terms for a child to learn from.Unfortunately the book does not have pictures. Would be a huge plus if it were revised . Or maybe take your own picture as you bake each recipe!

This was a replacement of one of my most cherished Food Processor cookbooks. I was thrilled to find one used. The condition was good enough for what I paid and for my purposes. It is my MOST favorite cookbooks. IF, I find my original , I will pass this to my Grand-daughter it is easy to follow and has a lot of basic cooking recipes. Potato pancakes (Latkes) are to die for. I was thrilled to find it here.

I have had this cookbook a long time, and it is my go-to cookbook for everything. I have made so many things from this book, and each one is as good or better than the last. The Heavenly Chicken, Favoite Tuna Casserole, Scalloped Potatoes are my most requested foods people want me to bring. The Matzah Ball reciped and briskets recipes also are wonderful. Truly a worthy investment.

Out of a collection of more than 400 cookbooks, Pleasures of Your Processor is my absolute #1 favorite. Flick through this book that always rests on my kitchen counter and you will easily be able to pick out some of my favorite recipes by the condition of the pages - well worn and splattered. Norene's recipes are well-written, easy to follow and always work. Just a few of our family favorites are Super Roast Brisket, Potato Kugel Meat Loaf, Carrot Latkas, Easy Cottage Cheese Pie, Pecan Jam Squares, and the all-time family favorite Blueberry Crumble Cake. Pleasures of Your Processor will make you feel as if you have your very own Jewish mother in the kitchen with you (whether or not you are Jewish) sharing all her secrets of a good cook and helping you put a delicious meal on the table. This is an excellent cookbook regardless of your ethnic background! I have gathered many cookbooks over the years and this is one of the best I've purchased. If you don't own a food processor, go out and buy one and then buy this book! I just recently purchased this book based on others reviews here, and as far as I'm concerned ALL cookbooks should be published this way (plastic coated, folds to make it's own stand, three ring bound with tabbed indexes, and two plastic "spatter shields" for the pages you are opened to). I have only made three things so far from this book: Best Coffee Cake, Chili, and Orange Corn Bread. My family and friends gave me kudos on all three. I even have adapted some of my friends older recipes to prepare them in the food processor. Just find something similar in the book, and use the techniques and order of preperation described. I can't wait to try out some of the over 697 recipes that remain. Thank you Norene, and I hope you took out a patent on that book style!

I have used the pleasures of your food processor since I married 15 years ago. IT has been my best friend in the kitchen, always providing me with new and different cooking ideas, along with teaching me about the processor. I wouldn't be without it!. I am now buying it for my cousin who bought for the first time a processor( at age 50) and has no idea what to do with it! I have bought thru the years 2 books for myself as they seem to wear out and become illegible. Our favorites are, banana chocolate chip drops( kids go wild over these), easy brocolli cheese pie, scalloped potatoes(friday nite just wouldn't be the same without these) and so many more.
