I had the privilege of studying under Dr. Orrick. His thoughtfulness, warmth, love for Christ, and the stories of his adventures stood out in class and they certainly stand out in this book. Mere Calvinism is a rich, biblical exposition of the doctrines of grace. Sadly, those great, life-warming doctrines are often rejected in our modern evangelical circles. Orrick beautifully explains the doctrines, unpacks their biblical roots, clarifies misconceptions, and answers popular objections in a very plain, simple, easy-to-understand way. Many of the common objections to the Reformed faith grow out of a spirit of autonomy. Orrick challenges the would-be autonomous man and points him to Scripture at every point. I highly recommend this book!

Mere Calvinism is the most helpful and accessible book on the Doctrines of Grace. Everyone can read this book and benefit from it. I think other works on the Doctrines of Grace can be very helpful, but they can miss a personal/pastoral element to the work. However, this cannot be said of Mere Calvinism. It is pastoral and personal on every page. This book shows that the Doctrines of Grace are not dull or dead, but the Doctrines of Grace are living doctrines! Throughout the work, Orrick shows that the Doctrines of Grace relate to everyday life and they should cause us to find joy in God!

I started the book yesterday and am already up to page 77...definitely not a fast reader. But the writing style and information conveyed makes it an easy read. The information is solid.

Succinct. Clear. Very readable. Excellent discussion questions. Great illustrations. Helpful chapter on what must be true if the five points are not. I highly recommend it both as an introduction or review of the subject.

I have read many books on Calvinism....many of them very good...but this is my favourite. The author makes it understandable and informative. He throws in many examples and stories. Makes you think

By far the most controversial issue I deal with in pastoral ministry is Reformed theology. This is both a positive and a negative. The negative side regards debates over predestination, the extent of the atonement, etc. which are often ugly, needlessly divisive, and often distract us from the real mission at hand. On the other hand conservative evangelicals largely were not debating these issues two or three decades ago because at the time, we were having to defend the authority of Scripture and the exclusivity of the gospel.With that said, I continue to explore the issue. I am firm in my own convictions but open to the views different than my own. One new release that has peaked my interest is Mere Calvinism by Jim Orrick of Boyce College.Most works that explore Reformed theology from a favorable or unfavorable perspective are typically either academic, thus somewhat cold and distant for the average reader, or hostile in tone. Dr. Orrick’s volume is none of these. Orrick offers an honest and unapologetic defense of Calvinism that is both pastoral and winsome.It is important to make this clear from the beginning. Those who are already 5-point Calvinists will love virtually everything about this book. Yet those who find disagreement with the professor will at least give him a fair hearing even when he comes down strongly for his positions.This is the real strength of the book. Dr. Orrick writes with academic precision but with the heart of a pastor who wants to win the reader over but more than that he wants the reader, even his detractors, to see the beauty and practical importance of Reformed theology.Regarding his defense of Calvinism, I would recommend picking up the book yourself. Those familiar with the debates will find familiar territory here. Orrick’s use of illustrations to explain his argument is unique and a blessed addition (his use of a sponge to describe total depravity was particularly helpful). His clarifying between true Calvinism and false Calvinism (“they don’t believe in missions”) is much needed especially if the debate is to bear any real fruit moving forward.In the end, for those serious about engaging these issues, Orrick has offered one of the best books I have come across. For those sympathetic to Orrick’s conclusions, this is an invaluable tool for your positions. For those who disagree with him, at the very least, take his arguments seriously. It is good for fellow believers to debate, but let us debate understanding what it is we actually disagree on.This book was provided by P & R Publishing for the purpose of this review.

This book is written in a friendly, chatty, conversational style. If you want to learn how to "runt he" application, this book is for you. If you don't mind troubleshooting your first macro that you've copied word-for-word from the book because it starts with "ub" instead of the more commonly used "sub", this book has your name on it. You're not a dummy if you can figure out that when the author gives an example, "Dim Book... Dog = "labradoodle" ", he's telling you that he hasn't figured out what he's coding - dogs or books. I may be a little too harsh. These are little things. But, then again, programming isn't very forgiving. So, if you're a fan of puzzles with a few pieces missing and the wrong picture on the front of the box, buy this book. You'll love it, too.
