Bassem Youssef became a media sensation in the wake of the Arab Spring in Egypt. He started a YouTube program which expanded into a weekly TV show that became one of the most successful television shows of any kind in the Arab world. His brand of political satire, which was inspired by his hero, the American satirist Jon Stewart, ruffled feathers on every side of the social, religious, and political scene in Egypt. He writes about his rise from surgeon to TV star to exile in Revolution for Dummies: Laughing Through the Arab Spring. The events and factions of the Arab Spring are mostly mysterious to Americans, so Youssef's narrative and explanations are welcome. He acknowledges his own inadequacies, and refers the reader to boring scholarly books for a more historically accurate account. He writes, "Let me give you some advice: if you think you are ever going to truly understand what is happening in the Middle East . . . stop!" Still, as he tells his perspective, a clearer picture of this period in Egyptian history comes into view.Since Youssef came to fame as a political satirist, I expected this book to be funny. He gets in a couple of good one-liners, like "This is how you know you are in an Arab country: you are either stuck in a revolution or in traffic." But other than a couple of zingers, it wasn't funny. Not at all. I'm guessing his show was much funnier. My overall impression of Youssef is that he is arrogant and unlikable. He built his reputation on being a contrarian, calling out Egypt's changing constellation of leadership for their hypocrisy. He does that, but the problem is that everyone who disagrees with him is an a--hole. He claims to be Muslim, but I never heard a good statement of what that means to him. To him, every Muslim leader in Egypt is hypocritical and power driven. No matter who is in power, he opposes their every word. That seems like an unprincipled, untenable way to live.He lets his criticism spill over into American politics as well. Trying to emulate his hero Jon Stewart, he tries to trump Stewart's anti-Trumpism. But it comes off as artificial and overblown. His attempts to equate Trump with Egyptian regimes that run over peacefully demonstrating civilians with tanks don't fly. His comparisons of Fox News to the the Egyptian broadcasters who work hand-in-hand (or maybe hand-in-glove) with the government similarly fall flat. If he wants to see examples of government and the news media working together, perhaps he should have paid more attention to the Obama administration and Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign.Youssef, perhaps inadvertently, gives support to Trump's position on Islam. He writes about that crazy YouTube movie that someone made about Mohammed. (He buys Secretary of State Clinton's line that the attack on the Benghazi embassy was a reaction to the video.) Muslims throughout the Arab world rioted, issued death threats, etc. Youssef writes, "Isn't it a wonder that when people accuse Islam and its Prophet of being violent and extreme, the first reaction out of Muslims is violence and extremism?" On Trump's immigration policies, Youssef says, "When Muslims worry about Trump becoming president and how he will deal with Muslims, they are just worried they will be treated the same way they treat non-Muslims in their countries. Like sh--."I would like to have read some reflections on political Islam from someone who is both a faithful Muslim and who is in favor of religious freedom and diversity. I am in no position to judge Youssef, of course. I have never met him. But I feel like someone who so flagrantly displays his opposition to Muslim practices and theology is probably not a good representative of the faith. E.g.: A sheik "proffered that freedom devoid of religious control would inevitably lead to sexual freedom and orgies happening in the streets (which sounds like heaven on earth to me)."Instead we get a guy who wants to kiss up to liberal Americans by parroting anti-Trump, anti-Fox news one liners, who equates the political and religious cesspool that his country has turned into with the American political and religious atmosphere. Sure, there are parallels. He says that "radical Christians and radical Muslims are not that different," while failing to acknowledge the yawning chasm that exists between radical religionists in the U.S. and in the Arab world. Again, I don't see Christian clergy crushing protestors in the streets of New York.Youssef faced opposition and personal peril to himself and his family due to his outspoken political statements. He gained a large following in Egypt, where there was no tradition to vocal opposition to the government. For that, the recognition he has received for being an influential voice in his home country is warranted. But as he tries to continue his caustic brand of commentary across the Atlantic the result is more screeching than substantial. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

Bassem Youssef is an extraordinary personality who deserves to be a major international star. He gets billed as the "Jon Stewart of Egypt" but Stewart himself acknowledges that Youssef had it a lot more difficult; Stewart was never at risk of arrest or of having his show shut down. And you can't help but admire someone who can do humor (and satire) in two different languages. The book is a highly informative, frequently humorous accounting of his five years from the beginning of his show "Al Bernameg" to his exile in the United States. If you've seen his many interviews or seen the documentary film "Tickling Giants," much of the material here will be familiar, but it provides greater detail and a requisite amount of snark. Buy it. Buy it for your friends.

It’s not often that I review a book before I have even finished it but I could not wait. And it’s not often I buy a book on Kindle and then feel the need to buy a physical copy too. That’s how much I am enjoying this funny, wise, elegantly written, informative excursion by one of my heroes. Courage comes in many forms and Youssef has it. The courage to point at the emperor and say he has no clothes, and then laugh because a naked man leading a parade is funny.Read this because it’s an important book. Read it to learn some truths about a very complicated region of this earth. And read it to learn something about life and politics wherever you live. Nothing any human being does or says is too sacred for satire. And finally, read it to have a good laugh, because goodness knows, we all need one.

This book will grab and keep your attention right from the beginning! This book reads as if you were watching Bassem on The Daily Show with each part having multiple segments. I have already bought multiple copies as gifts!

This is the most awesome book I've ever read and that is no exaggeration. This is real. A guy put his life on the line to show people how utterly ridiculous the leaders of his country are. i can't imagine the bravery of such a person who would take on the fear and hatred like he did. He's a Jedi Knight but instead of a light saber he wields words that are even stronger. And to top it off I highlighted more in this book than I ever have in any book. This is wisdom worth keeping.

The "Jon Stewart of Egypt" describes his role in the Arab Spring and his view of its tragic failure, as Egypt went from hope to hypocritical religious dictatorship to a secular military dictatorship that was even worse and even more absurd. At one point the military announced that they'd developed a machine that cured Hepatitis C, cancer, and impotence, and their supporters believed it completely, saying any evidence to the contrary was a fake news conspiracy to make Egypt look bad (sound familiar?) Bassem Youseff's narrative is filled with humor, but also anger and deep sorrow for what his country has become. A must-read.

I LOVED this book. I figured I would since I like Bassem. Despite not being Egyptian, I have been obsessed with the country for almost a decade, and had to snap myself out of seeing Cairo with rose-colored glasses regularly while I was there. Egypt has a problematic political history, and it's nice to see a native acknowledge it, and call out who needs to be called out.Much of the book is written how one would expect a comedian to write it, but then it takes a turn when he describes how he had to leave his home country. If the reader is focused while reading the book, they can appreciate how he prepares you for it.

If you're like me, you vaguely remember the 1995 Denzel Washington movie, but your interest was piqued by mentions of the Rawlins character on the Netflix Luke Cage series. This is definitely a different type of detective novel, and Easy Rawlins is a unique take on the "private eye" character: an amateur, unlicensed, African-American, and avoiding the police. Author Moseley excels at dialogue and immersing the reader within the scene, and making even the unfamiliar (to me) worlds of black clubs and 1940s L.A. seem familiar. He creates intriguing characters; my personal favorite is Mouse, a short (and short-tempered) gangster and Easy's backup, the John Clark/Hawk/Chas to Easy's Jack Ryan/Spenser/John Constantine. Moseley also eschews the cliched "The dame walked in on two legs that spelled one word: trouble"-style prose, and instead focuses on Easy's keen observations, and the contrasts between his actions and thoughts (especially when it comes to Easy's interactions with white racists). So why only three stars? The plot was a bit of a mess. As in most detective stories, seemingly random and unrelated events occur, and a cast of characters is introduced, while the detective remains as in the dark as the reader and finally ties everything together in an explanatory scene at the end. The disparate elements of the mystery here never gel together quite properly (especially the explanations of who murdered who). All in all, though, it's a good read, and made me want to read the rest of the series. Suffice to say that, based on the way Daphne Monet (the title devil) is described and characterized, I'd be rushing to her rescue despite all common sense too.

I didn't want to put the book down. I came here from the movie; of course you can tell that from previous reviews of Easy Rawlins. And you always think that the book will be better than the movie. And it was and wasn't. Guess both were great. Initially, I thought I was reading the movie and then subtle differences presented themselves.  Easy meets Albright at Joppy’s bar. True. He's hired to find Daphne Monet. No difference there. Coretta James. Frank Green? That's where the subtle differences start. Frank Green’s name keeps coming up. I know why but the book weaves it much better. More detail. And then the Mouse shows up and you can tell that Easy loves the guy but really wants no parts of him. He's that friend you love but hate to have around. Gets you into trouble. The kind of trouble that's burdensome but entertaining. So it got to a point that I couldn't put the book down. Even though I essentially knew what was going to happen from the movie. The book just took it deeper.I loved the wit. The voice in Easy's head that he argues with is hilarious. Mouse answering the phone (you'll see) is hilarious. And then there are the themes that become the making of a great franchise. Easy is a black man in 50s LA, dealing with racism, sexism, oppression and depression. And he wants to lead a normal life. But how can you? How can any of us and attempt to rise above it all?On to book 2.

I had not read anything by Mr Mosley before Devil in a Blue Dress with the exception of a few pages in a paperback I picked up briefly on a visit to a doctors office. I immediately became a fan however when I saw him interviewed for three hours on C-Span, a show called In Depth that can be seen on YouTube by the way. His answers to questions and further statements about his work and life in general and writing were so straight forward, sensible and logical that I was drawn to his work whether I agreed with his opinions or not. I am white, although I am familiar with the terrain Mr Moseley covers as I grew up in the fifties in Brooklyn in the Bedford Stuyvesant section and went to school with and had many friends and acquaintances who were black. I worked in several stores there as well that had black clientele. Devil in a Blue Dress is a great read because the characters are well drawn, the scenes are believable and of course Easy is a true hero, a good man and a long suffering man who has been through the wringer and is being put through one in the book. Easy is also likable, sensible, moral, suffering and noble. He's also righteous and a bad dude when he has to be or is driven to be. I say its a terrible book because Mr Moseley has shown us quite graphically, the depths of degradation that humans are capable of, through Mouse and Daphne and Allbright and Terran as well as the cops. Depths that perhaps the black man and woman have been driven to in some way by whites although as is shown you don't have to be black to do evil deeds. I put down the book a couple of times because these degrading scenes are terrible to behold however true of life they may be. Someone said in another review that the plot was faulty, perhaps a bit unclear. I disagree, Moseley's characters in this work, and the predicaments they find themselves in, are bigger than the plot, transcend plot in a way because they are more important than plot. In Devil in a Blue Dress Moseley's LA is as weighty as Chinatown in the Jack Nicholson film or The Naked City in the TV show of that name: indeed we hear that there are 8 million stories in The Naked City as there are undoubtedly in Moseley's LA. There are hundreds, thousands of plots in these places and all of them spell random death and and perverse behavior. I don't give five stars to anything on principal, not many can be Dante or Shakespeare or Dostoevsky, but Devil in a Blue Dress to me is a solid four.

The lecture notes taken down by students were periodically gathered together and submitted to Merleau-Ponty for his approval. Then every two or three weeks these notes were published in the Bulletin du Groupe d'etudes de psychologie de l'Universite de Paris. By the end of the year, one would have the full set of lectures as transcribed by students and as reviewed by Merleau-Ponty.

About the Author

Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908 – 1961) was a French phenomenological philosopher, strongly influenced by Karl Marx, Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger in addition to being closely associated with Jean-Paul Sartre (who later stated he had been "converted" to Marxism by Merleau-Ponty ) and Simone de Beauvoir. At the core of Merleau-Ponty's philosophy is a sustained argument for the foundational role that perception plays in understanding the world as well as engaging with the world. Like the other major phenomenologists, Merleau-Ponty expressed his philosophical insights in writings on art, literature, linguistics, and politics. He was the only major phenomenologist of the first half of the twentieth century to engage extensively with the sciences and especially with descriptive psychology.
