What If Life Wasn’t About Paying Bills, Working FOR a weekend, and Then Dying? Tired of sleepwalking through a mediocre life bribed by mindless video gaming, redemptive weekends, and a scant paycheck from a soul-suffocating job? Welcome to the SCRIPTED club—where membership is neither perceived or consented. The fact is, ever since you’ve been old enough to sit obediently in a classroom, you have been culturally engineered for servitude, unwittingly enslaved into a Machiavellian system where presumptive rules go unchallenged, sanctified traditions go unquestioned, and lifelong dreams go unfulfilled. As a result, life is hijacked and marginalized into debt, despair, and dependence. Fun fades. Dreams die. Your life’s consolation prize becomes a car and a weekend.Recapture what is yours and make a revolutionary repossession of life-and-liberty’s reins through the pursuit of ENTREPRENEURSHIP. Paradigm shift? Heck, the paradigm doesn’t need a damn shift—it needs to be thrown-out altogether.UNSCRIPTED shows you how to rewrite life’s dream-killing script. Ditch the job, flick Wall-Street the bird, and escape the insanity of trading your life away for a paycheck and an elderly promise called retirement. MJ's previous book was an instant classic and exposed a lot of truths about entrepreneurship and the unhappy state of modern society in general. This book tackles many of the the same ideas from a different more in-depth angle, and takes it to another level for several reasons. For starters, it is side-splittingly, roll-on-the-floor, unrelentingly hilarious and entertaining (at least to my mind). To me, almost every single page is full of funny anecdotes and analogies. Listening to the Audible version of this is better than listening to a good HBO stage comedian, and far more useful. Second, the book makes a concerted effort to address the psychological barriers that I've come to believe are the biggest obstacles to entrepreneurship. As the Romans (apparently) understood, a proper slave doesn't need chains to remain in bondage...once conditioned, a person's attitudes and beliefs are far more effective tools of servitude. This applies not only to the poor, but to many of us who have successfully navigated years of 'success' milestones, and yet found themselves with a career environment that has not held up its end of the bargain. That's the reason for the title "Unscripted", to re-engineer years of ingrained and indoctrinated beliefs that won't really serve your dreams of success and freedom. Finally, this book is impressively in-depth and detailed. It doesn't (and can't) give you a specific formula for a successful business for your situation. But it works from a number of angles, over and over, chipping away at the roadblocks that will snare most of us who decide to go for something more. In that sense its a useful reference with some meaningful ideas and approaches to tackle challenges, many of which are not in The Millionaire Fastlane. If you're a cozy, happily employed person who is deeply satisfied with your weekend lifestyle, then this book is absolutely not for you. In fact, run away! Its only going to cause you trouble. But if you find yourself among the discontented 70%, stuck in traffic and depressed, profoundly disillusioned with your own past choices; pay close attention. Whining about the traps of our modern society will get you nowhere, and the true cause of your ills is not really the common scapegoats: politics, racial or class issues (although they have their moments). It's your mental framework and a lack of understanding of and experience with entrepreneurship. The truth is that America can be a truly great country for anyone, but its rewards mercilessly and relentlessly go to those entrepreneurs who deliver relative value. Provide real value to others and whatever limits you presume exist in your life (sex, age, race, upbringing, education) will rapidly vanish. In that sense, its a real hopeful step forward and a useful tool for many of us.Absolutely highly recommended, he's now among my favorite authors.UPDATE: I've now completed the book 3 times, and it only gets better. Each time I go through it I realize there are some useful pearls of wisdom in there that I had grasped conceptually but not completely faced (about myself). Some people might regard the material in this book as shocking. But what's really shocking is that here in the 'Land of Opportunity' after years and years of college and real world experience, this is not common wisdom. You don't hear this material anywhere. It should be Business 101, or Prosperity 101, Life 101.

If you had the choice between purchasing one of the popular financial “guru’s” books or this book Unscripted which would you choose? Not having read the authors previous book you might assume the popular “guru” book is a no brainer right? As wise ole Yoda said “Judge me by my size, do you?” For me and those who have read the author’s previous book the answer is clear – buy, read and most importantly apply the framework provided in Unscripted! This book is not only huge in size (416 pages) but more importantly it is huge in value it can provide to you and your future of breaking free of the “scripted” life. This isn’t a feel good book or “here is the 30 steps you need to do to become a millionaire and work from the beach when you want to” book. This is a book that helps you see how our life has often become one big “scripted” voluntary slavery where we work all week for two days off with a mountain of debt over our heads. Realizing our current reality is worth the price of the book alone but it goes on to showing you the framework to break free and lead an “unscripted” life. There is so many high value wisdom nuggets provided in this book but some of my favorites are:• The Careless Whispers from you Soul• Action faking vs action taking• Sunday evening is the ultimate test if you are leading a scripted life – how do you feel about going back to work Monday morning?• Don’t be a “Time Prostitute” – time is scarce money is not!• Don’t be part of the “herd” headed to slaughter!• Hyperreality and observational bias (Jedi Mind Tricks)• Being a producer vs consumer – “you can’t be owned by what you own”• The “pain of discipline or the pain of regret”• Micro-processes + macro-processes = success – no silver bullets just small habits focused• There are no shortcuts!• The “event” is the result of the “process”• Have a growth mindset• The Kaizen Principle• Getting rich isn’t done by desiring wealth it is in providing “perceived value” to others• “Perceived Value vs Actual Value”• “Luck vs Probability” and the “Gumball Machine” Brilliant analogy!• Investing and all the popular falsies/scams• Cancer Corollary – “do I have something I want and what will it cost me”• Autonomy (control) as the number one reason for our happiness! This is again worth the price of the book 10x over!• “How to create a business that changes your life” this is the framework!• The “CENTS” commandments again worth the price of admission!• “Expected Value” – holy cow batman this is good stuff!• From Process to Productocracy!• Best (13) Execution practices!• Lifetime Passive Income!• “The last business ever – if you want”Unscripted is a book that I read slowly because it is so jammed packed with valuable wisdom that you need to process. It is a book that I will re-read many times over taking more notes and putting actionable habits that move my life from the Scripted to the Unscripted! This is the one book I will give to all my kids and close friends!

If you want more out of your life, but feel trapped or that you can't succeed no matter how much you try, this book may just hold the breakthrough you've been looking for. There is no "formula" or "secret" that is revealed in the book - just a sobering and analytical look at the way societal norms and pressures can be affecting you without you even knowing it. Before you can release yourself from these "invisible chains" (the script), you must first make them visible. As the book keeps reminding you..if you want the same results as everyone else around you living a "normal life", then keep doing what you (and everyone else) is doing. If you want more, you are going to have to write your own script and find your own way to get there. This book serves as a guide to do exactly that.

"Millionare's fastlane" book was a fun read, but I decided to read this one as well. It's poorly written, repetitive, and not a lot of useful info here.Author contradicts himself quite a lot in the book without realizing it. Oh - and guess what he is doing with his millions? The slowlane. Investing it safe and slow. So it's kinda hypocritical.Overall - this is more INSPIRATIONAL then PRACTICAL, so instead of 400 pages of ramblings - it could've been all said and done in 20-30 pages on a high level, but the author has an ego that shines through the whole book.I would not recommend this book to anyone, really. Watch a summary on youtube in 10 minutes and you'll be better off.

Life Without Lack is a book to be savored. One could read straight through it quickly, as I did for the sake of reviewing it, but I wouldn't recommend that. I will definitely be rereading it and this time slowly, taking the time to meditate on the wisdom presented and to implement some of the ideas. For example, Dallas Willard started out by recommending that readers memorize and meditate on Psalm 23. I honestly wasn't sure I was interested in a book on Psalm 23. I felt overly familiar with that Psalm, but this book really has.a lot to offer whether you are a person who memorized the Psalm as a child or whether its your first time reading it. Dallas Willard's gentle wisdom is refreshing and encouraging. In chapter 8, Dallas helps the reader plan to spend a day with Jesus. But he isn't helping the reader plan a retreat. This is a day with Jesus in your very ordinary schedule, inviting Him along with you and spending the day together. These are just some of the ideas with which I would like to spend more time and actually implement in my life.I also had concern over whether I could offer this book to the men and women at the homeless shelter where I served. Their lives are filled with palpable lack. How would this book play there? Dallas is aware of these concerns for all of us who experience lack in one way or another in our lives and he addresses these concerns adeptly. From chapter 1, "Whereas King David wrote, The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want," Paul wrote, "not that I speak in regard to need." They both knew the provision of God that became for them a life without lack."But how could Paul say that? This man has been dragged through every jailhouse in the Roman Empire. Several times we find him bobbing in the ocean, trying to survive shipwrecks. It makes me want to say, "What do you mean, you don't have any wants? Couldn't you use a boat?" He would respond, "Well sure I'll take a boat, but I don't really have to have it, you understand?""I'm not there yet, but reading this makes me eager for the day when I can say that I'm living a life without lack. I'm looking forward to implementing Willard's suggestions for growth in this area of my life.*I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher. (and then purchased a hard copy because I liked it so much)

"Life Without Lack" takes up the teaching of Dallas Willard on Psalm 23. It was a teaching given in the early 90s and apparently Dallas Willard allowed Larry Burtoft to use the material to develop what turned out to be this book. The beauty of this is Burtoft's name doesn't appear anywhere when it comes authorship. It is a tremendous tribute to Dallas Willard, but I am so deeply impressed by Burtoft's humility.Dallas continues to feed my soul. Psalm 23 is a psalm I regularly use when I wake up each morning. This book gives incredible depth to what I am reciting each day. I really do lack nothing in my life. All I truly desire is the presence of the Lord. The last chapter of the book is a game-changer for me. Dallas lays out the thought that my "day" should begin in the evening. He then walks through some ideas of how to structure each "day" so God is always before us and we realize his presence in a sweeter way day by day.It is yet another Dallas Willard book that is marked up and ready to be utilized over and over.

Dallas Willard died nearly five years ago, and those of us who voraciously read his books mourned his passing for many reasons, including the thought that we wouldn't get to read any more of his words. But the Lord whom Dallas served so faithfully is alive and well and has made it possible for us to receive an especially poignant message from Dallas. Life Without Lack was not written in book form by Dallas, but these are most certainly Dallas's words. Dallas's daughter Becky Willard Heatley and friend Larry Burtoft carefully and prayerfully transcribed a series of Dallas's talks on Psalm 23 and edited them, fortified with some of Dallas's other writings, into this important book.So many of us can quote Psalm 23, but few of us have ventured deeply into living the truth of it--a life that lacks nothing because all its needs are met by the Good Shepherd. Contentment, peace, and security are not empty wishes; they are the fruit of a life lived day by day and moment by moment in the knowledge of God's care. In this book, Dallas shows us the way to experience that kind of life. Those of us who knew Dallas can almost hear his voice speaking these words of promise, hope, and challenge to us. His humble, gentle tone comes through clearly. His insights are grounded in the truth that was fleshed out in Dallas's life as he himself practiced living in the fullness of Psalm 23.

so i'm watching this movie '1 night' and there's these scenes where it's a soft, quieter tone to them. if you've seen a romance film of any kind you know what those scene are like and i'm almost to the end of this book and my head gets this warm, fuzzy feeling - euphoria - and it's one of the best feelings in the world. cheyenne's writing from beginning to end does that for me. it's warm, it's magical, it's uplifting, it's heartbreaking. if you need a longer, but soft and warm, poetry book to read, i suggest this one. if you need a little short i suggest maroon daydreams but no matter what if you ever want that warm fuzzy feeling in the back of your mind, that euphoria, read cheyenne raine's work. she's going placing. oh and if you can focus on the book and a movie, i suggest watching 1 night with it, you'll understand why when you do.

I have both the ebook and the physical book and I recommend both. However (!!), if you have the chance to get the physical copy, do yourself a favor and buy it! Cheyenne was clever and left space to create and really make it your own. Do it! It gives you a chance to interact creatively with her words and stories and it’s so much fun!The poetry itself is beautiful, of course. The book is split into sections, which i really enjoy in a collection of poetry. That kind of organization takes the reader on a journey and the addition of stort stories at the end was surprising and enjoyable!Cheyenne is a wonderful writer and the poems and stories are full of magic and whimsy. There is a lightness and air about her writing that is almost childlike in its curiousity and exploration of the many worlds and vignettes she creates for us!

Just like maroon daydreams (which I also highly recommend), this book is filled with poetry crafted out of magic, warmth, and whimsy. I love Cheyenne's style and will now pick up anything she writes in the future. My favorites pieces in this collection were "queen in a throne of chaos", "queen of honey and salt", "tired highway", "horror films", "daily sounds", and "speechless things".

This collection was such a warming experience. My favourite poems and pieces where the ones that brought fantasy in... though that doesn't make me love the others any less. The imagery was great and so inspiring. I want to write books from these poems.Absolutely in love.

That's the best way I can describe this collection of Raine's poetry. So many of the poems have a feeling of child-like fantasy. At the same time, they also hint of perseverance, determination and maturity. Innocent but not naive. Powerful messages lay within many of these poems, and then others just paint picturesque scenes that you find yourself longing to be a part of. Whether you're looking for poems you can identify with or ones that capture simplicity and complexity simultaneously, this collection by Raine is one that won't disappoint.

*I was given a free copy in exchange for my honest review*Cheyenne’s words are so entrancing to read! This collection holds such magic that you thought you lost when you were a child, it brings it all back and it’s wonderful to experience feeling innocent and adventurous again. This poetry collection feels like home.I am so in love

(Disclaimer: I received this free book from the author. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)I love the way these poems are laid out and organized. There is amazing content and each poem gives you a little glimmer into a stunning world. The collection is entrancing. The collection is simple, but full of meaningful imagery that seeks to soothe you, to rouse you, to connect with you, and make it seem like you're not alone.

Lovely.

If you are reading this review, according to the cornucopia of research offered in this book, you are unlikely to be an iGen’er. “By 2015, one out of three high school seniors admitted they had not read any books for pleasure in the past year, three times as many as in 1976.” While Professor Twenge cautions us not to evaluate some of her findings as good or bad, this, for me, is surely a bit sad.As a sexagenarian father of two daughters, aged 14 and 16, I desperately needed and wanted to read this book. And I wasn’t disappointed. It is well written and provides a wealth of information and insight. Much of it, I found, reinforced my own observations of my daughters. In some cases, that allowed me to breathe a sigh of relief. At the very least, their habits that are the most different from my own at their age are not unique to them.Twenge is careful up front to articulate the limitations of this type of statistical analysis. “Because the survey samples are nationally representative, they represent American young people as whole, not just an isolated group.” That larger group, the iGen’ers, are defined as those born from 1995 to 2012, a group of 74 million Americans that currently account for 24% of the population. One of the things I normally find limiting in this kind of big data statistical analysis is that it chronicles attributes. But if a picture is worth a thousand words, a behavior is worth ten thousand pictures, and Professor Twenge clearly appreciates that. She doesn’t just present the data, she probes it.A few random thoughts occurred to me as I read it.I came of age at the height of the Vietnam War. When I was required to register with Selective Service, the draft was still in place and college deferments, for good reason, had been eliminated. I vividly recall standing in my high school cafeteria at the age of 17 listening to the statewide announcement of our lottery draft numbers. The numbers were drawn by birth date and the official reading the numbers started the broadcast noting that the first 123 numbers drawn were almost certain to be drafted, the second 123 numbers may or may not be depending on need, and the last 119 could rest easier. My birthday was drawn 124th. The birthday of my friend, who happened to be standing next to me, was drawn 3rd.I offer that only to suggest that there are certain historical events that help to define individuals, if not a generation. The risk of being sent to fight in the jungle of Southeast Asia was one for me. That’s not to say that iGen’ers have not endured such historic events. It’s just to remind us that they exist. The other observation that I had, which isn’t directly explored in the book, is the change not just in how we live, but where we live. I walked to school on my own starting in the fourth grade, road my bicycle everywhere, and spent nearly all of my waking hours with friends—with no adult supervision. People didn’t live in sub-divisions so much in those days. We lived in economically diverse neighborhoods. Urban sprawl and the socio-economic homogeneity of the suburban subdivision have both empowered and demanded certain changes in how our children live.My final observation has to do with the individualistic versus collective social norm. Professor Twenge writes, “…cultural individualism is connected to slower developmental speeds across both countries and time. Around the world, young adults grow up more slowly in individualistic countries than collectivist ones.”My family lived in China for nine years. For my daughters, it was during the period from age 5 until age 14, on average. China has a collective culture in the extreme and it was my observation that the children matured very slowly, at least compared to my personal experience as a Boomer. (I found out from this book that this is a global development.) Because of the collectivist culture, however, my wife and I were very lenient with the independence we allowed out daughters. At a restaurant, for example, we never hesitated to let the children go off and play on their own, out of our sight. (A children’s play area is offered at virtually every restaurant.) Violent crime and attacks on children are rare in China, but more importantly, we knew that everyone else at the restaurant, including the staff, would keep a close eye on the safety of the children. It’s just part of the collectivist mentality. They all feel responsible. My point being that I’m not sure the individualistic versus collectivist dimension isn’t a bit counter-intuitive when you get to the social extremes. The study does reinforce the far-reaching impact of technology. It comes with a lot of baggage. Social media is not social at all. It’s entertainment. And, for the most part, it’s not authentic. Selfies, for example, are always staged. Reminded me of The Jetsons, when they would always hold a mask of perfection in front of their face when talking on the video phone. In many ways, I consider this book to be a launching pad rather than a conclusion. Professor Twenge has done a great job of starting the conversation. But it needs to continue. What is it about technology that has cast our children in this way? Why do they think and behave the way they do? (Twenge has started that conversation in many areas.) And what, as parents and members of the larger community, can we do to reinforce the good things (e.g., our children are safer) and attack the negatives (e.g., suicide rates are up). Some of the developments are going to be a little tricky. Twenge points out, for example, that iGen’ers are overwhelmingly inclusive. In terms of the racism that is haunting our society today, that might suggest we just need to wait and the problem will be resolved. I don’t think so, and, to her credit, Twenge apparently agrees. A commitment to inclusion is not enough. We must do more.I also think it will take the village to address the iGen’ers overwhelming anxiety about their financial future. That is truly a problem for the business community and the government to solve. The implied social contract that existed between employer and employee when I started my career disappeared starting in the 80s. It isn’t coming back but we have to build some form of alternative. Technology and social evolution have taken away the safety net of self-sufficiency (i.e. the Thoreau model) and have left a void in its place. It’s a void that needs to be filled; or bridged, perhaps.I, therefore, go beyond the parents of iGen’ers and educators in recommending this book. We all need to read it because we all have a role to play, both for our children, our selves, and the future of our society.

Born in 1996 and now in senior year of college at UCSanDiego. And everything in this book has seemed to ring true for me, and of the students around me. For me, I'd say screen time and reliance on texting/messaging instead of real conversations was a big factor in my lack of social skills in high school leading to much social and romantic failure; the sapping of social media; the constant sleep deprivation in high school (constantly felt asleep at the wheel driving to school though never crashed, and often in classes). I have deleted facebook and all that validation-hunting antisocial social media. This book has been very eye-opening to see how my generation is sadly faring. I wish there was something I could do for the students around me and the ones coming in. And their soft, unprepared asses. -Will Sun

With 3 IGen kids in our household, this book appealed to me. I know Millennial kids - and our kids exhibit all their bad habits and more. So I'm glad someone finally noticed that this IGen subset is different and deserves its own category, if only to study them independent of Millennials. We gave cell phones to the children when they got their drivers licenses - just the cell phones to talk and text; we never bought them smart phones at all. When they began working summer jobs, we advised they buy the more inexpensive Ipods in order to avoid the expensive service plans, but they would have none of that. Now as young adults, they are absolutely tethered to their smart phones, and their service plans are one of the biggest items in their monthly budgets (in spite of having WiFi everywhere) so I'm not sure holding them off made any difference at all. And where will this lead? The book ends with a giant question mark. I gave this book 4 stars because I felt the content could have been condensed into a long article - maybe in The Atlantic or the New Yorker. Then again, perhaps I am so spoiled by having a content-rich environment on my own smart phone, I no longer see the value in purchasing a book. Sigh...

The book uses long-term generational surveys (I remember taking the 12th grade survey back in 1986!) to show how the generation born since 1995 have changed. Not only is the information incredibly interesting and compelling, it's vital to helping us understand the children and young adults in our country. I highly recommend the book for parents, educators, and anyone else who works with young people.I also recommend the book for teens. My 17 year old picked it up and read several pages and plans to read more. I'm also sending the book to my college-aged daughter and hoping she will share it with the Residential Life office where she works. The book is based on hard data and filled with charts, but there are also anecdotes to humanize the numbers. Quick read and super interesting!!!
