In this second edition, Alexander has not only included developments in digital storytelling that postdate the first edition, but he also appears to have incorporated feedback, criticism, and commentary from the previous release. Those readers looking for a textbook approach to digital storytelling will find this book disappointing and possibly frustrating, as will those looking for a linear path in the text. Alexander's literary style is, unsurprisingly, very much like his oratorical delivery -- rambling, discursive, and punctuated with cultural and literary references. His style is also, for the audience that either shares or could share his romantic perspective on story, infectious. He obviously loves his topic and in the course of the volume tells the story of digital storytelling and his own story of falling in love with it. As such, this is not an abstract, objective, or coldly rational portrayal of the academic subject but a reference-rich and personal retelling.

I could have not selected a better book. Sometime back in the 60"s @ about 14-16 years old I tried and succeeded in obtaining my Novice License I was a geek then. Because I did not have the funds to continue (a radio) I let it die. From 1975 t0 1982 I worked in the electronics industry designing circuit boards. Although Electronics theory was not necessary to do this drafting function it was convenient to be surrounded by brilliant Electronic Engineers and Technicians. I left this position in 1982 and pursuid a career in Business Management. Then in 1993 I told my wife I was going to attempt to try to get my Technicians ticket on a whym. ( I long since lost any credentials of my earlier endeavor. Low and behold I passed, but again put it on the shelf not to use my new ticket to talk on VHF. This time I i renewed my ticket as required so I am still current.About three weeks ago a neighbor also a Ham walked by and said you should upgrade, you do not need the code and you can talk to the world.. This got me thinking so I got on Amazon.Com ans searched for books.I found Buck's Book and ordered it.One week from the day I received it I took and passed my General exam test (they told me I missed 4 answers)I can tell you get the book, read it cover to cover two times (lite reading) take a online test once then go for it.It worked for me I am now General cant wait wait till his Extra Book comes out

I don't normally freely promote products.. Mainly because I expect products to be top quality with no need for promotion.That being said, I have put off getting my General for years.. Not enough time and radio is not a priority.I saw your post on Facebook and decided to give it a try. I am involved in education and I know the worst way to learn is to sit and "memorize". I decided to order your General book along with the Technician for my son. I read the General book over a period of 3 days. I love the way it is laid out...the answers in BOLD and no " fluff". Walked confidently into the the test session this morning. Literally 20 minutes later i received confirmation that I passed. I only missed 3 questions, and I am sure of which 3 i missed.... The darn digital questions...My son is reading your tech book and will sit for the test next month.Thank you for a quality, well thought out product.Revolutionary in the staid, boring HAM radio study world...

I have a really tough time learning for standardized tests. This book was the best aid I have used. I took paid online courses but things just didn't click. Seeing the wrong answer over and over makes no sense. The way this book is written really works well for me. The exam questions and answers are clearly written in book form and your learning as you go along. I found it a very enjoyable read that flowed well. It's not filled with tons of useless data but just enough to enjoy "the story" After you read the book form of the answers you then reinforce your knowledge with the correct answers only section. The end is the exam questions with the correct answers again! I'm a cheapskate lol but this was money well spent. Passed easily! Thx you very much.

Love this book. I read through the ARRL book but was not doing well on the practice exams. Seeing so many wrong answers with the right answers can be very confusing. I studied this book for a week and began reliably passing the practice tests. Finally took the real deal test and passed my General exam. The author has the right idea. By only showing you the right answer it is much easier to retain the info and not get confused. Highly recommend this series. Studying for my Extra now, and already bought the book from this series for my Extra.

Like you, I'm no dummy, but I am real life gets in the way, taking time from precious studying. It took me a while to get to this book but once I ordered it, I LOVED it and have since ordered the next in series for general. With great pleasure, I found myself going down rabbit holes with other material, but as time got tighter I realized that I still didn't know what I needed to know to pass the test. This was the ABSOLUTE best use of my time. I spent weeks driving up and down the coast listening to other material, took the train many times studying on-line quizzes. This was simple, the best, really fun too. How much of it was made easy by my aimless work before, I can't say, but I honestly believe that I should have just gone straight to this book and not wasted time on other plans. I found the online quiz super helpful to monitor my knowledge retention so I would recommend keeping that too. I just have to say that positive reinforcement- esp ONLY getting the right answers, was best for me, and at this price, might be best for you too.

Teaches you what you need to know for the test, without a lot of extra information to confuse your brain. I took the tech and general back to back, and the correct answers just popped out to me. I used this book plus hamstudy.org. I also took a shot at the Extra (because, why not, it's already paid for), and failed as expected.

On an iPad, the text is messed up, whether you use the Kindle Reader, Safari, Edge, Chrome, or Firefox. It's pretty much unreadable.

Almost as fun as the first book. This one probably suffers a bit from knowing what to expect. It’s definitely worth it if you enjoyed the first though.

Pretty good follow up to the original book. If you enjoy Ashens, and you should, you'll enjoy this.I also appreciate that the thanks at the end take up much less space.

As a long time follower of Ashens's Youtube channel, I enjoyed the opportunity to purchase some physical tat from him and learn about some games that probably should have had some elbow grease put into them.

An excellent sequel.

Kindle edition suffers from sentences being printed over each other. Normal iPad and 12.9 no matter orientation. I want to read this so badly as the last book was brill. Please fix so I can update my rating, thanks.

I was late to getting my hands on Dr. Ashen’s first “Terrible Old Games You’ve Probably Never Heard Of” and I loved it after reading it, so I decided to get the jump on the sequel by pledging for it directly on Unbound.This book is definitely bigger than the first. It includes a lot more stuff, with more ‘Most Disappointing Game You Ever Bought’ segments, little reports on the lowest scoring games from various magazines, and even an interesting expose on the “Hareraiser” game controversy. It’s very entertaining, so much so that I’ve actually read it twice in a row! I can tell I’m going to get loads of joy reading this multiple times in the future.I got a complimentary pdf version for pledging early, and I read that first, but the physical book is nice, too. I got the special one with a holographic cover, and it’s nifty! The cover is sturdy and the pages are nice and thick, so I’m totally satisfied!Overall, I really love this book, just as much as the original. If Dr. Ashen decides to do a third book, I’d like to see him cover console games instead of being strictly limited to home computers, just so we can see more terrible old games we may or may not have heard of!

During his time at Marvel Comics, he discovered and mentored many top comics talents, including Jim Lee, Whilce Portacio, and Mike Mignola. I can only give this a 4 cause I personally expected more, since I've read most of the other books in this series. keep in mind I was also a lot more of a novice when I read the other books. so I'm not holding my experience against this book. I have since reading my first DC comic guide broken into comics and learned a lot.That being said, this book has alot of information and is very complete. At times is can very general cause of the subject matter. Its hard to get into specifics when your talking theory. Things got to be judged by the case by case basis, but this book does a great job of getting you to think of things you might has thought of before. I think the real strength of this book is that i cover an area that is usually over looked by artist.but overlook this book if your serious about making comics. The scott mccloud book with a similar name might have been more complete but here it was neat to see DC characters used in the examples for stronger reference. should be said that this is closer to that book then it is a step by step book on creating comics which their are many of.

If you are looking for a definitive this is how it is done book, this is it. The book delves into the mysterious aspects of creating comics like spotting blacks, panel composition, page layout considerations and storytelling.It is not the typical how to draw people/ perspective/ backgrounds. The book assumes you have some kind of art background. The type of knowledge that you will find comes from 80 plus years of comics building experience refined and handed down from generation to generation of on-the-job comic book artists.Aside from this book and Maybe the Joe Kubert School, don't expect to learn about this stuff until you are sitting in an editors office at DC or Marvel having your first pages critiqued.It is everything I hoped it would be which is why I pre-ordered it when I saw it was going to be released.

 The DC Comics Guide to Creating Comics is like an advanced introduction to drawing comics. It provides a good coverage of techniques that are required for creating successful comics, and also introduces the different aspects of the creation itself. Main thing to note is the coverage is mostly theory, the actual hands-on are covered by other DC Comics Guides.The book is authored by comics veteran and authority Carl Potts who while working at Marvel, also mentored Jim Lee. The text is written in a concise and easy to follow manner. The techniques discussed are supplemented by clear examples. It's insightful and after studying them will be you not just read but also understand how other comic artists layout their pages.There are four parts to the book.The first part introduces the concept of sequential visual storytelling, what it's all about and things to look out for.Second part covers paneling. Things like how they are laid out, establishing shots, the flow, and how they affect storytelling.Third part covers comics writing using the classic arc as main example. Here it also covers artistic style and approach to drawing, giving examples of realistic rendition or the more stylistic approach such as the use of black by Mike Mignola.The last part is a walkthrough of the process of creating comics from having a script. Three professionals are given the same script and we are shown how they interpret the script and lay out the pages. There are explanations from the artists as well as analysis from Carl Potts.At 192 pages, the book has quite a lot of useful information packed in. I have bought every how to make comics, including the writing, inking, digital comics, etc. They are all pretty good, but honestly this is the only one you need if your main focus is to draw comics. Chapter 7 - Step-by-step guide for artist is probably the single best chapter I have read in any of the books on making comics that exist, including the Stan Lee ones. It explains how to work from scripts, and plots. Then goes onto a step by step method for Artists.Examples of how 3 Professional artists ( one of them Whilce Portacio ) handle a script with detailed explanation of the thought process is given by both the artist and Author. It talks about layout, thumbnails, roughs, to finishes. This chapter is well worth it, and when you add the fact that the rest of the book is pure Soup to nuts this makes it the best book I have ever read on the subject of making comics. I am buying the hard copy no question.Some basic writing techniques are shown, enough for you to put together a story with all the required elements.If you are looking for a how to book try this one first you will not regret it.

Create Your Calm should be required reading for every mom. There was so much I could relate to as Stephanie's journey of motherhood was so similar to mine. So many of us have lost ourselves in striving to "be everything" for our children. We have all felt defeat and exhaustion. We don't even remember who we are anymore. Create Your Calm takes you on a journey of from discovery to being your best self. The book delves into topics such as: self-discovery, alignment, mindset shift, and committing to change. The how-to activities are practical and easy to implement. The key, as Stephanie points out, is to start practicing self-love and living with intention. I really enjoyed this book. As an emotional intelligence consultant, I endorse many of the recommendations provided by Stephanie. I highly recommend this book.
