I love it, it is so good for people to have fun with English!

I love tennis, I play regularly and often watch televised matches. I've perused some of the basketball and baseball manga from Japan and been rather lukewarm, so I wasn't expecting much from this series. It has been hailed as one of the more popular sports manga series in history, and was made into an anime series that was equally well received. I checked the first volume out from my library just to see what all of the fuss was about.Without getting too deep into the story here, the manga is about tennis (duh), but the story centers around a young Japanese phenom who just moved back from overseas. He is 12 years old, but regularly wins against opponents in the high school tournaments. Since he is so young, he encounters a lot of opposition, mainly from older players, but also from his peers. The reason I am giving a four star rating is because the series is good, but generally a little over the top. I do understand that artistic license is taken to make a manga series more engaging, but some of the panels are pretty out there. Like the first match where the players are hitting the balls into each others faces and such. It's a bit much. And the reason this stands out is because within the first three pages he corrects an older player on his description of the grip styles - accurately. The author of this series was a pretty accomplished tennis player throughout his school years, and there is a lot of credibility in the occurrences. A lot of the training, the styles, the match formats, etc, are all realistically portrayed. The over the top-ness shows in the crazy matches themselves and the super human feats of tennis that each player seems to be able to perform. It's like a match between Federer Prime and Super Djokovich at times.Despite the superhuman feats of ability and the often sappy pre-teen romance, the series is built solidly. I admit that I was drawn in very quickly. Four stars is a good rating, and if I compare this series to other quality series in other genres, the shortcomings are obvious. But compared to other sports manga I believe it is at least on par with the best. The determining factor for which sports manga you might prefer really comes down to what sports you enjoy. If you enjoy tennis, then this is an ideal series. Other sports manga covering different sports I recommend are listed below. Enjoy!Slam Dunk, Vol. 1 (Slam Dunk (Viz)) (basketball)Harlem Beat #01 (basketball)Whistle!, Volume 1 (soccer aka football)Eyeshield 21, Vol. 1 (football)Of course the sports manga genre is huge in Japan but only barely scratches the American manga market. Here's hoping for a hockey sports manga! (Sooooo unlikely!)

This is one of those manga that grows on you. At the beginning I found the main character to be too cocky for my taste, but I soon got around to liking him more. This is because Ryoma Echizen, the twelve-year-old tennis prodigy, has reasons for the way in which he behaves, and as the volumes of the manga progress, we slowly get to understand him better. Besides, some of his opponents are so obnoxious, that Ryoma's attitude does not seem all that out of place. The story starts with Ryoma arriving at Seigaku, a high school that counts with one of the best tennis teams in the nation, and fighting to make the team, or as they are call it in the manga, regulars. This is not an easy task, and no freshman has done it in the past, but Ryoma counts with an unparalleled confidence and an impeccable lineage, his father was one of Japan's best tennis players until an injury forced him to retire. Will he be up to the challenge? The author of the manga is an ex-tennis player and coach, so it is clear that the misplaced players in the court are intentional, but it still bothered me a little bit, since I do not understand the need for this. Also, there is the recurring theme of Ryoma playing with his weak hand, which gets old quickly. Nevertheless, the rest of the aspects are very good, and make this a sports manga worth trying out. The drawings are extremely detailed and convey the action scenes efficiently. As is common in the sub-genre, there is a fair amount of humor, which in this case is executed well. Also, there is a hint of romance in the air and there is definitely more to come.Even though I would not say that this is one of the best sports manga available, Hajime no Ippo definitely takes the top spot in my list, it is a product that is good enough to deserve a chance. The good thing is that once the competition starts you are hooked, wanting to know what will happen next. Luckily, in this sense, this manga does not commit the error of having matches that last too long, which helps move things along and keep it interesting.

I have just come home and read the Prince of Tennis and am still on a high from the story. I skirted around getting it for awhile before my curiosity got to me. Ryoma is a great character, perhaps reminding me a tinsy bit of Akito Hayama fromm Kodocha but with more spunk, fight, and occasional humor. Fairly serious, unresponsive, and blunt nature but with so much more to him. I find him an endearing main character and enjoy every match he wins. I just love characters that beat the odds. The couple of other 7th graders that pal around a bit with Ryomo in the club are enjoyable side characters, and I'm quite intrigued by the team of the highest players of the school. This book humored me so much and got me helplessly addicted to the story. Another anime you might compare to this could be Princess 9(though I haven't yet watched it). I highly recommend this series! I think if you like series such as One Piece and Naruto, even though they're very different, you would like this.Tennis anyone?

Paper Girls Volume 1, by Cliff Chiang

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—The book opens with a 12-year-old girl named Erin having an incredibly vivid and confusing dream. She wakes up and starts her paper route. Because it's November 1, there's a lot of residual Halloween weirdness out on the streets, and soon she finds herself the target of some teenage boys who are wearing costumes while vandalizing the neighborhood. Erin is rescued by several newspaper delivery girls who are traveling together for safety, and then the narrative takes a surreal turn. Some folks in the neighborhood start disappearing, and people who appear to be wearing Halloween costumes seem to be from different times or places. The papergirls try to figure out who is attacking them and why, who are their allies or enemies, and just what on earth is going on. The tale ends with a striking cliff-hanger that will let readers know that the girls' adventures are far from over. Vaughn's reputation has already skyrocketed with the success of graphic novels like Saga, and this title helps to showcase his abilities as the author of far-out fiction that will make readers think. Colorful and captivating, the artwork expertly captures the strange qualities of this memorable outing. Strong language makes this more appropriate for mature readers. VERDICT An awesome selection for older teens and adults looking for an exciting sci-fi tale with unexpected twists.—Andrea Lipinski, New York Public Library

This is a decent start. To use a TV term, it feels like a pilot. Future volumes may make this opening collection of 5 issues appear stronger. It is set in 1988, the early morning after Halloween. The main characters are four 12-year old girls (both Vaughan and myself were 12 in 1988: he nails the hair, clothing, posters and lingo). The art synthesizes with the narrative well, and there are a few nice full page panels. One girl, at a time of stress, recognizes that she wasted much of her childhood playing video games. It would make for a great PSA.

I won't really comment on the story, characters, plot, art, etc...Its all great. 5 stars. What I thought was very fun about this volume was the alien language. There is a review on the back of the book, the issue titles, and a decent amount of dialogue which are written in this language. Its just a simple cypher for English.Throughout the volume every letter but Z is used, along with periods, exclamation points, and question marks.(there are no apostrophes for contractions fyi)I started by decoding the review on the back...and that gave me several letters. Then I started with the dialogue and starting getting the rest of the letters pretty easily. Not that hard to decide but a very fun addition to the read. You don't HAVE to decode it.But you will miss out on the issue titles. And knowing the aliens dialogue adds to the story...especially toward the end of the volume. As there is a misunderstanding which will confuse you (like it confuses the girls). It might be fun to read it through without knowing he language...then decode it.Idk, I couldn't help but decode it right away.

Another story extolling '80s nostalgia mixed with paranormal science fiction, Paper Girls is a fun story, if not as atmospheric or well-developed as Netflix's Stranger Things or even Brian K Vaughan's superb Saga series. The cover tells you nothing other than this is a gender-bending story, replacing the more familiar Paper Boys with Paper Girls, only this doesn't really matter all that much. Neither of the characters are developed very well. Better developed characters would have provided a stronger emotional center, but as it is the story is a lot of fun, filled with surprises and terrific art by Cliff Chiang and colors by Matt Wilson. Perhaps we will get to know each girl as character better later in the series, but either way I am curious to see what inventions Vaughan adds to this cool story.

Vaughan begins with a strong trope of a coterie of 80s kids on their first job and sci-fi hijinks ensue: it is a solid and somewhat standard trope increasingly appealing to both Gen X and older Millennial nostalgia. Vaughan's primary gift as a writer is well-plotting and breathing life into the standard tropes though. Vaughan's snappy dialogue is highly referential, but while this is normally his strength, it feels a bit like a weakness here: his characters feel a little too clever to be entirely believable and the future dialogue is either truly alien or it is awkwardly formal. Vaughan's plotting though is clearly on display here, but his characters don't seem to pop like they normally do. The girls feel like tropes. The action is fast-paced, but it seems to at the cost of character development, which is frustrating. Chiang's line art and Wilson's decade specific coloration does really add atmosphere.

Intriguing plot featuring time travel and multi-dimensions. Interesting characters albeit somewhat stereotypical (in a non-racist and non-sexist way, thankfully). Definitely a book I would recommend but I warn you as someone posting this review very late (*semi-spoiler alert*)... vol 2 was ok and vol 3 kinda sucked.

i bought this so my teenage daughter would read something that wasn’t on her phone. her exact words were “i read it much faster than i thought i would” so you know it’s good. really anything bkv does is good but this is age-appropriate.

Interesting start to the story. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I enjoy Saga by the same author. I think that the story will only get better and more interesting, as this was basically an introduction. I have volumes 2 and 3 waiting.

Spectacular print! I saw that I could buy these on Kindle but the physical copy is so satisfying to read and look at! I highly recommend any fans of the Kindle series to buy these copies

Brian K Vaughan really knows how to write some crazy stories. Much like his beautiful work on Saga, you never really can get a handle on where Paper Girls is going. This is not a bad thing. On the contrary, it's one of the great strengths of the story telling. The art is also wonderful as is the books use of color. I don't know where Paper Girls is headed but I'm down for the ride.
