Very informative.

My family's go-to answer book is the "Believer's Bible Commentary" (BBC). A whole-Bible commentary provides more detail than a Bible handbook or study Bible, but less than a dedicated commentary (e.g. Romans). Doctrinally, all 5 commentaries below may be classified as evangelical and dispensational.EDITIONSThe black and blue edition is much thicker than the older orange dust jacket edition. Another reviewer said the second edition "has no updates." But it has 130 more pages, based on Amazon's count (2592-2462=130). Nelson advertises "14 pages of 4-color maps...and other study helps." So charts, maps and diagrams may have increased, but I doubt the commentary has changed, since MacDonald was glorified in 2007.COMMENTARY STATS* The Bible Knowledge Commentary (BKC) by Walvoord & Zuck *Editions: 1983 (NT), 1985 (OT)NIV translation base.167 grey-scale illustrations!1575 pages of OT commentary!979 pages of NT commentary!Emphasis on analysis and the original languages.School of Influence: Dallas Theological SeminaryFrequently quoted and recommended in other Bible commentaries!Endorsed by Jeremiah, Wiersbe & Swindoll.* Believer's Bible Commentary by MacDonald & Farstad *Editions: 1995, 2008, 2016NKJV translation base.People and places glossary!77 grey-scale maps, charts, sketches (1st ed.).1150 pages of OT commentary.1183 pages of NT commentary!Emphasis on devotion and life application.School of Influence: Emmaus Bible CollegeNelson's most popular commentary!Endorsed by Van Gorder, Wiersbe & MacArthur.Quotes from the BKC.* The Moody Bible Commentary (MBC) by Rydelnik & Vanlaningham *Edition: 2014NASB translation base.Scripture and topical indexes!80 grey-scale maps, charts, sketches.1422 pages of OT commentary!580 pages of NT commentary.Emphasis on refuting higher criticism.Superficial coverage of difficult verses.See my detailed MBC review on Amazon.School of Influence: Moody Bible InstitutePopular among Moody and Rydelnik fans.Endorsed by Enns, Jenkins & RosenbergQuotes from the BKC.OTHER OPTIONSThese next whole-Bible commentaries are based on previously released study Bibles. I've bought the BBC in hardbacks, Kindle, e-Sword and the FaithLife app. Supplement with the BKC and the "New Unger's Bible Dictionary," if you want more info on a verse or topic (e.g. elders)."Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." - , KJV"It shall greatly helpe ye to understande Scripture,If thou markNot only what is spoken or wrytten,But of whom,And to whom,With what words,At what timeWhere,To what intent,With what circumstances,Considering what goeth beforeAnd what followeth."John Wycliffe (1320-1384, Bible translator, church reformer, fire martyr)Copyright CBR of BibleLight Ministries.

I was raised in Christian households (Tridentine Roman Catholic on one side and Missionary Baptist on the other), and I have always owned a Bible of my very own. I even had periodic bouts of feeling drawn to study it, but I never really answered that call, as it were, until 2016. At first, I started going through book by book according to a reading schedule in my app, and I was progressing very well just me and the Holy Spirit and the Bible. But then I ran into Ezekiel and the proverbial brick wall was met. Ezekiel is tough. Like Revelation is tough, Ezekiel is difficult, and understanding ancient symbols from Eastern culture is important. I knew I needed help, and so I bought a commentary. That's how I came to own this book. It's beautiful. The binding is high quality. I have written and highlighted in it, and the paper is excellent stock for allowing this. So here is a list of the Pros and Cons as I see them. Your mileage may vary.1.) The introductory articles to the various sections and individual books are wonderful. Seriously, wonderfully good information. The history of the book and the authorship of the book as well as various challenges and responses from different schools of thought on origins of the text are given. These are given clearly and somewhat fairly (though a conservative Dispensationalist bias is both evident and totally disclosed. It's not sneaky or secretive).2.) Don't even think about choosing this book if you want to have answers to your more difficult dilemmas with Scripture. That is not what this book does. Want commentary on the Midianite virgins in Numbers? The absolute moral depravity of the Patriarchs in places? You will not find this here. At. All. You'll need much more in-depth books for that.3.) If what you need is something to guide you through a superficial first reading or just to clarify symbols in some of the prophecies and parables? This book will do that VERY well for you.4.) This book is seriously, unapologetically, and nakedly Dispensationalist and conservative. If that isn't going to work for you...get another book. I am a Lutheran. I love my Baptist and evangelical brothers and sisters in Christ, so I was able to smile at some of the more obvious bits and continue my reading without bother. If you, however, will be frustrated by the constant repetition of dispensation ideology, get another book.I hope that helps you choose. These were my thoughts on the book. I am now in a place in my studying where I require much more in-depth works to help me along, but I STILL pull this massive tome out for those introductory articles on the books and on the various groupings of books in Scripture. They are worth the purchase of the entire book all by themselves.Keep in mind that this book is HUGE. You won't want to carry it around with you, but if you keep it on your nightstand or next to the chair where you spend you quiet time in the Word...it can be a really useful addition to your home library.

This is a wonderful Bible commentary. I have the first edition and I've been using it for years. I purchased three of the second editions for my children. The content of the book is still excellent. But, the print is too small for my eyes to see very clearly. It also appears to be printed in a very dark grey ink instead of black ink, and that also makes it hard for me to see. I still gave these commentaries to my children, believing their younger eyes will probably not have the problems I do. But, I still wish book publishers would consider the needs of all of their readers when deciding how to print a book. I gave this 4 stars due to the printing issue. But, it's a 5-star book in content. It's great to have an entire Bible commentary in just one volume.

Hands down the best "Devotional" commentary I have ever used! Now let me be clear...if you are trying to "Study" the Bible, as in...go into great detial about the greek and Hebrew, how many times a word was used, etc. Ie, an Academic Commentary, this is not for you. This is for the person who desires to know GOD, not to know about him. It is very simple and easy to understand. I highly recommend it as a companion to your Bible reading, not Bible studying. You will gain tremendous insight and will not be disappointed. Also don't be put off by the price, you can find it for less than half digitally.

Love this bible commentary. I had been looking for a simple, non-academic commentary — think NOT Matthew Henry. This is it. I’m so glad I got it. If you are a lay person (regular bible-loving Christian) you will really enjoy this commentary. It’s a HUGE book. You can’t really carry this around. *See pics.

Review

"The Common Core State Standards in Math needed to be deciphered! After reading this book, teachers will have acquired an abundance of realistic steps to achieve fantastic outcomes! Well done!" Author: Susan E. Schipper, Elementary Teacher"I loved this book. It is a must have for K-2 teachers. The breakdown and explanation of the math skills is excellent. As a teacher who has been teaching Common Core for a few years, I wish I had had something like this to help guide me from the beginning. I will definitely recommend it for my school. This book is a winner for classroom teachers." Author: Donna Adkins, First Grade Teacher"I love the user-friendly organization of this book. Teachers in K-2 can easily check the prior grade level standards to see how each standard builds off of another. Teachers who have multi-age primary classrooms will appreciate the easy-to-follow examples. All teachers will value the clear "I do, you do" format presented in the book as well as the common misconceptions sections which will help teachers plan accordingly." Author: Renee J. Nealon, Second Grade Teacher"This book is worth its weight in gold, for states following the Common Core and for states who don’t. States not using the Common Core can use this book for a better perspective of what is meant by rigor and how students can master the standards, which are very similar to individual state standards . . . The importance of the book is immeasurable." Author: Pat Baker, Retired Elementary Teacher, NBCT"This companion supports implementation of the Common Core Mathematics Standards with attention to the instructional shifts: focus, coherence, and rigor. The standard-by-standard examples provide teachers with an image of what the standards looks like in the classroom for both teachers and students. The attention to students’ conceptions helps teachers plan with student thinking in mind and contributes to the collaborative work of grade-level teams." Author: Nicole Rigelman, Associate Professor"This practical, exemplary resource provides teachers support in their understanding and learning of the Common Core Mathematics Standards. The book does an excellent job of unpacking what the Standards mean and makes explicit connections both to the Standards for Mathematical Practice and common student misconceptions. It is an ideal choice for a book study at either the grade or school level." Author: Jeffrey Shih, Associate Professor"This book is a must go-to for classroom teachers and coaches and leaders who support teachers in implementation of the Common Core Mathematics Standards. Connecting the Common Core Mathematics Standards (both content standards and practice standards) together with the effective teaching practices (Principles to Actions, NCTM, 2014), the authors provide the practical resources to support teachers in deepening their understanding of the mathematics in the Standards in ways that will enable them to bring these Standards alive for all students. It is a book that will be the cornerstone of our professional development." Author: Cathy Martin, Director of PreK-12 Mathematics"At the end of the day, it′s our students who matter most. Have we made them feel great about themselves as learners or not? It′s that simple. So it′s with a huge sigh of relief ―and a round of applause―that I recommend The Common Core Math Companion, K-2. Linda Gojak and Ruth Harbin Miles bring to this book a deep understanding of the developmental needs of children in the primary grades. Let′s face it, the CCSS are challenging, perhaps especially at K-2, and we have to be extra vigilant about how they influence instruction in the early grades. These two experts also deliver the goods needed for successfully implementing the standards day-day-day, including key vocabulary, models, lists of manipulatives, reproducibles for kids. I especially admire the recurring sections on students′ misconceptions and common errors, so that teachers have a clear sense of what to watch for, and more importantly, the kind of skills and understandings to teach into in future lessons." Author: Sharon Taberski, Author of The Common Core Companion: The Standards Decoded, K-2"I appreciate the comprehensiveness of [The Common Core Mathematics Companion: The Standards Decoded, Grades K–2]. It compiles the standards, progressions, math practices, and more into one resource. . . . This is a reference resource to have read¬ily available for planning units and lessons, increasing content knowledge, and understand¬ing math. It will be a valuable companion on the path to increasing teacher efficacy and student learning. After I shared this resource with my colleagues, all of them requested copies for a book study." I have the K-2 and 6-5 Kindle Version, which is the exact replica of the hardcopy print that I also have. Having it on the kindle allows me to bring the book with me and reference it with the exact same format as it is in print, which is what my other teachers have.I am not sure why, but this is completely different. You cannot read the key vocabulary charts. You cannot go to the page that corresponds to the one in print. I am truly disappointed and wish I would have known in advance before purchasing. Instead of paying the money I would have made a point to carry the book with me.

This is a a huge support to my school community. We use it religiously for planning. I really appreciate being able to look at the progressions of the standards with what that instruction looks like for students and teachers. Additionally, there are key questions, tasks, and exemplars built into the text. This is a guide I wish I had when I was teaching--but glad I have to share with my staff.

This is an EXCELLENT resource! I have ordered it for our teachers and they are using it often. I like the "What Teachers Do" and "What Students Do" section. It makes things clear. Worth purchasing.

I love the way this book not only shows the progression of the standards across grade levels, but give examples of problems and vocabulary to ensure that you are hitting standards.

An excellent aid in decomposing, understanding and using the Common Core Standards! Lots of good info and things to use!

If you are having trouble with common core this the book to buy. It gives very detailed directions to follow so we can understand it better and be able to teach it

This book is amazing! It is so thorough, our instructional coach may even purchase it for all 5th grade teachers. Great for grades 3-5. I recommend the ELA version as well.

Great resource for teachers. It explains the Common Core Standards as well as gives ideas for lessons. I have the Language Arts book too. Both books are treasures!

Review

“Parkin has a deft sense of the ways that video games appeal to and satiate the longings of the spirit...Death by Video Game offers an excellent sociocultural study of the 21st century’s quintessential art form.” —The Washington Post“For the past decade or so, Tom Bissell has been widely regarded as the best video game writer, and his essay collection Extra Lives the best book about video games. That was true until Simon Parkin’s Death by Video Game...Brainy enough to appeal to even the deepest gamer, and yet accessible enough for the reader who hasn’t picked up a controller in years.” —GQ“Parkin has...a literary eye for scenic and investigative detail...Demonstrate[s] the importance of thoughtful, serious criticism on gaming and play.”—New York Times Book Review “This country could use a reexamining of the underlying appeal of video games. Simon Parkin’s book does just that, exploring the different aspects (discovery, evil, competition) that come to captivate player-bases so strongly that individuals will neglect their health to the point of death.” —Flavorwire“Groundbreaking ... his reportage leads to brilliant, fresh insights ... Accomplishing that rare feat of teaching while entertaining, this work ignites a series of debates crucial to the future of video games.” —Library Journal, starred review“The finest book on video games yet. Simon Parkin thinks like a critic, conjures like a novelist, and writes like an artist at the height of his powers—which, in fact, he is.” —Tom Bissell, author of Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter“Simon Parkin is gaming's Jon Ronson, and his book charts the extremes of the medium to try to answer the question why the hell do we all care about video games anyway?” —Kieron Gillen, writer of Iron Man,Uncanny X-Men, and The Wicked + The Divine “The best book about video games I've read since I wrote one.” —Steven Poole, author of Trigger Happy“Fascinating . . . Parkin takes seriously the notion that video games, or some aspects of them, might be bad for us. Yet he also takes video games seriously as a source of solace for a grieving parent or spouse, a safe form of indoor play for Iraqi children in Baghdad, and a helpful way, like any other form of fiction, for humanity to avoid staring too directly at our certain deaths.” —Chris Suellentrop

As expected. No issues.

Delves into what is typically overlooked when it comes to gaming and the potential negative impact it has on those who become too obsessed. A great read for those who are into gaming.

I personally have been an off and on gamer since I was five-years-old. I am now thirty-two-years-old and I have seen and played them all. Sometimes in healthy moderation and sometimes I find myself trapped in “chronoslip,” as Parkin describes it – the loss of time as one battles good, evil, or another person from the other side of the globe. My history mainly revolves around gaming consoles - from the Atari to what I currently own, the Xbox One. And on the PC I spent an unknown and presumably unhealthy amount of time in Starcaft and World of Warcraft. When I inadvertently or purposely decide to submerge myself into video games Simon Parkin’s “Death By Video Game,” truly captured why I had binged for hours, days, and even months at a time - escapism. The idea of escapism bleeds throughout the book along with the good, bad, and ugly of video gaming. This is my first book I have read concerning the gaming culture, but more importantly its history and its merit to the developer and the gamer himself. The book focuses on an array of topics such as the massacre and bloodshed at Columbine and Sandy Hook as the murderers were gamers themselves. It explains why video games are a sort of different medium than television in correlation to freedom of speech. It becomes evident that video games may have limited freedom due to the fear of public backlash like a game where you assume the role of Lee Harvey Oswald and assassinate John F Kennedy again and again...What I really liked about “Death by Video Game,” is that I could relate to his subjects who just wanted to flee from their own lives. As a former World of Warcraft player, I literally could not stop playing until I had realized I was not doing anything worthwhile in my life but searching for loot, the most powerful gear, and the rarest items. And for what - bragging rights and an eerie sense of accomplishment. In the end, no one but other hardcore gamers can relate and that is why this is a must read. Video games have and can ruin relationships and for those who don’t really understand the enthusiast who spends his day in front of the screen should read this. But as Parkin explains there is a certain thrill to it, like teaming with 24 other players online to down the last boss in a raid and reap the digital rewards. It is an experience, and to me it became a lifestyle to do the grind of leveling up, acquiring gold, and fulfilling requirements to proceed to the end game until the next expansion was released. As an introduction Parkin goes to shed light on the deaths of Asian gamers who, well played in excess to their own demise. From there he shifts from political to the positive and negatives of gaming and its young history. It is a very satisfying read and for me, it led me to come to terms that gaming is essentially a killer of time. A genuine waste of time. But so is television and theater.

This is a fantastic insight into the mindsets of gamers and how video games have become such an important part of so many lives, mine included. If you're a gamer who wants to understand yourself better, then read this book. If you're not a gamer but know some who rather bamboozle you, read this book. :-)

A lot of it felt very forced. Certain chapters back up the premise but much of it felt like it was lightly shoehorned in to give it more pages. The theme of "video games let you be in control why other media is passive" is overused in every chapter and became fairly annoying rather than informative. Did not do a great job of exploring the premise of examining those who have actually died due to obsession with virtual worlds. Wouldn't recommend to fellow games industry folks.

This is a really, really good book. It is full of well-written and thoughtful ideas about video games in general and specific video games. There were many games mentioned in this book that I had never heard of, or that I never knew the background details about. I encourage any self-respecting video game player to read this book. Excellent, and I would love to read a sequel.

Karen Armstrong should not need another introduction. She left behind her life as a Roman Catholic nun to devote a lifetime studying world religion, and she becomes one of the greatest religious scholars that has ever lived in the process. She is now, in her own words, a "freelance monotheist", and it is reflected in her careful, respectful and unbiased way of writting on every different religion. This book is another testament on this deep care and her range of knowledge on the subject matter. Fields of Blood seemingly discusses every single violence conducted in the name of religion, from ancient societies like the Summerians, the Assyrians, the Egyptians, the Greeks, Zoroastrians, Confucian, to the Abraham religion and the many religions in the Sub Continent, to the era of first secular states (the US and post-revolution France), until the rise of Zionism, the current "war on terror" era and the most recent rise of ISIS. Within this scope, she masterfully narrated on the politics, the struggles and the social interactions in each one of those eras, and explains us the gradual and intricate evolution of religion from the time religion, state and daily lives have not been separated yet, into the religion as we know it today. The book is so full of information and so airtight, however, that it can sometimes feel a little too complicated and unecessarily detailed. But I believe it is not meant to be memorised but rather to give us the big picture of how massively complex religious evolution is.As always, Ms Armstrong focused on the historical facts rather than the mystics or the folklores, and thus some may find the revelation in the book unsettling, such as the degree of editing the Bible experienced, or how Islamic Hadits were conveniently tailored, or the mysterious discovery of questionable scrolls containing the teachings of Moses for the Jews, despite the fact that during Moses' time in 8th century BC teachings were taught verbally rather than in writting - all of which have 1 underlying purpose: to match the rulers' political needs at the time. And this is the central thesis of the book, where all violence that are conducted in the name of religion are all ultimately man made. And the scripture-based justification that comes with them are nothing short of a political doctrine, not much different than the atheist doctrines by Hitler, Stalin and Mao.As Karen Armstrong herself puts it "terrorism is fundamentally and inherently political, even when other motives—religious, economic, or social—are involved. Terrorism is always about "power—acquiring it or keeping it." And so, according to one of the pioneering experts in the field, "all terrorist organizations, whether their long-term political aim is revolution, national self-determination, preservation or restoration of the status quo, or reform, are engaged in a struggle for political power with a government they wish to influence and replace."" Indeed, our main focus when it comes to religious violence should not be the religion, but what have happened in that specific occurance that created violence in the name of religion. And to that end, learning from this book, there seems to be a pattern where all root causes of violence eventually come from these 4 stages: 1. A group of minority are treated unfairly or even oppressed 2. A leader emerged among them to fight for their cause, which originally preach non-violence 3. Only to be crushed by those in power, pushing them further into the edge and force them to be radical 4. And so they launch their radical offensives, justifying their violent acts by (mis)quoting their Holy Book and fitting their oppressor into their doctrine (i.e. Infidels, the devil, etc).Karen Armstrong then elaborate, "the claim that the primary motivation of a terrorist action is political may seem obvious—but not to those who seem determined to regard such atrocious acts of violence as merely "senseless." Many of that view, not surprisingly, find religion, which they regard as a byword for irrationality, to be the ultimate cause." Questioning which religion is more violent than the other is, therefore, completely missing the point. Although she did admit that "this, of course, is not to deny that religion has often been implicated in terrorist atrocities." But nevertheless, "it is far too easy to make it a scapegoat rather than trying to see what is really going on in the world." There are thousands more words that can be written in this review, with thousands specific examples can be derived from this book. It is indeed the hardest review I've written so far, simply because there are so many great things about the book, and so many important points that I want to cover but could not possibly fit them all in just one short review. It is definitely one of my top 10 books to read to understand how the world really works. It is trully a masterpiece.

I enjoyed reading this scholarly effort and find myself in agreement with the author most of the time. She points out that while religion has often been blamed for wars and various other human evils, careful examination of historical facts clearly reveal that the root cause of war and other human acts of violence on large scales is politics. Religion, however, has often been waiting in the wings in the form of convenient ways to rally parts of society or to paint these acts with a sort of spiritual permission or encouragement. I gave the book 4 stars only because the author’s bias gradually became evident as the latter chapters evolved: those that discussed modern times. She was obviously quite critical of the US and its historical role in sowing the seeds of hatred in the middle east, particularly following 911, and even tacitly suggested that the US should have done nothing afterward in order to better counter terrorism. This chapter (Global Jihad) had a faintly apologetic feel to it, favoring the enemies of the US, referring to Bin Laden’s death, for example, as an “assassination,” and describing President Bush, with his “100 million evangelical Christians,” as having a “messianic streak.” She also too easily dismissed the role of Islam by pointing out that many of the more infamous terrorist attacks (including 911) have been carried out by people with little training or familiarity with the Quran. I was reminded of a limo ride I took from New York to New Jersey a few years after 911. My driver was Muslim and had been raised in Pakistan. We talked the whole way. At one point I asked him if he’s read the Quran. He told me that he hadn’t because he was illiterate, but he was a firm believer.

This ambitious work purports to examine "religion and the history of violence." I would recommend it for more than that, however. For its first 10 chapters (spanning the very beginnings of civilization to 1914), the book functions as a worthy introduction to world history for those who don't have the time to devote to the Durants' multi-volume "Story of Civilization." Yes, you do need to know a little about world history for this book to make sense, but anyone in college or later should be able to integrate it into their thinking.Armstrong's overall politics are clearly left-liberal, but she manages to fairly describe the role of religion in the majority of human history, when a sacred context was sought for all human activity. She describes how Western Enlightenment philosophers and European politicians turned religion into a private zone of inner beliefs and rarely action -- and then loses interest in the West. The last three chapters focus almost exclusively on the Middle East and South Asia as a sort of rebuttal to the received wisdom of unthinkingly pro-Western elites like Thomas Friedman and the early Andrew Sullivan.I frankly do not have time here to grapple with all the worthy arguments made in this book, although I have decided to join the discussion group at my father's church that reads one chapter a week, and may well use the book for a future discussion group at my own church. Armstrong's insight into the human condition is captured by this paragraph from the Afterword:"John Locke believed that the separation of church and state was the key to peace, but the nation-state has been far from war-averse. The problem lies not in the multifaceted activity that we call 'religion' but in the violence embedded in our human nature and the nature of the state, which from the start required the forcible subjugation of at least 90 percent of the population. As Ashoka discovered, even if a ruler shrank from state aggression, it was impossible to disband the army. The Mahabhrata lamented the dilemma of the warrior-king doomed to a life of warfare. The Chinese realized very early that a degree of force was essential to civilized life. Ancient Israel tried initially to escape the agrarian state, yet Israelities soon discovered that much as they hated the exploitation and cruelty of urban civilization, they could not live without it; they too had to become 'like all the nations.' Jesus preached an inclusive and compassionate kingdom that defied the imperial ethos, and he was crucified for his pains. The Muslim ummah began as an alternative to the jahili injustice of commercial Mecca, but eventually it had to become an empire, because an absolute monarchy was the best and perhaps the only way to keep the peace. Modern military historians agree that without professional and responsible armies, human society would either have remained in a primitive state or would have degenerated into ceaselessly warring hordes."The last sentence seems especially appropriate for Memorial Day -- we really do owe it all to the troops. Armstrong's last few chapters, particularly chapter 10, perfectly summarize how while many things have gotten better as a result of the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution, other things have gotten worse. The last three chapters argue that people in developing countries, especially those where the US is conducting military operations, owe their misery to the West and that we therefore reciprocally owe them some interest in their welfare and right to develop, according to the tenets of every religion in history. This sweeping review of the history of warfare, religion, and their relationship belongs on the bookshelf of anyone with an interest in these topics.
