This is my first book written by Easwaran. I loved the contemporary writing style to explain ancient wisdom, demonstrating timelessness of truths. There are so many mental models and highly visual metaphors that describe life. What was striking was the absence of organized religion. These truths can be read by followers of any faith and mapped to their own religious writings. The book further demonstrates what the great men and women of the world have been trying to tell us, through different religions and metaphors. A must read for anyone in the quest for what is beyond this everyday humdrum of life.

In all his books Eknath Easwaran is able to engage the reader in the most profound truths of our existence by making them accessible to our current era and applicable to our daily lives. As the title suggests, this volume distills and illuminates the universal meaning of what are the most penetrating spiritual texts created in any human civilisation - the Upanishads. Easwaran does this through a conversational commentary on a story told in the Katha Upanishad of a young man who confronts Death with the courage and uncompromised clarity of youth. This is not an academic treatise on an ancient Hindu text, or a contemporary discussion of spiritual concepts. This book, drawing upon the spiritual giants of all religious traditions, is a window on the the challenges and immense rewards of a life devoted to realizing the deepest meaning and fullest vision of what it is to be human from the perspective of a humble man who lived that life.Eknath Easwaran moved to he U.S. in 1959 from India as a Fullbright exchange scholar in English literature, and taught what may have been the first accredited meditation class in this country at the University of California at Berkeley.

A good book on its own; as well as a companion book to his Upanishads book. A good writer and a good spiritual book to be read over and over; as is the Bhagavad Gita.

Easwaren books are always worth reading. They contain good translations [I am not equipped to say whether they are the most authentic] and wonderful introductions that inform novices and somewhat advanced readers about the essence and philosophical envelope of the translated text that is about to follow. Ir would hard to believe anyone, with eve nthe slightest appropriate mindset, would not profit from reading this book.Finally, the book, like other is in the series, is very reasonably priced.

loved this audio book i got alot of insight into myself and others from this book.the narrator has a good voice and the music is a nice addition to each chapter. bought another book by mr easwaran and it is just as informative and interesting. if you like philosophy this is a good intro to indian teachings.

This is the first Easwaran book I read and it truly is one of the greatest books I have encountered. No one else comes close to vivid and clear story telling in a spiritual book. This is truly a classic and Eknath Easwaran's legacy as a great spiritual teacher will live on for generations to come. Concepts for readers new to Indian mysticism are wonderfully brought to life by Easwaran and bridges modern psychology and ancient spirituality. This book, along with Easwaran's other two classics on Indian spirituality, is a must read for anyone wanting to explore and understand the spiritual life.

Eknath Eswaren has a wonderful grasp of his own Hindu tradition and also understands the teaching of the great mystics and saints from all the great religions. He expertly relates these values to contemporary life and sees the common thread that unites them.This book is also a practical and encouraging guide to anyone who wants to make meditation part of their life.

The books written by microcap investors Sean Iddings and Ian Cassel are chronicles of corporate and management success in the same genre as iconic business books like In Search of Excellence by Tom Peters and Robert Waterman, Good to Great by Jim Collins and The Outsiders by Bill Thorndike. Iddings and Cassel are also in various ways behind the Anglo-Saxon investor forum MicroCapClub.com and the website intelligentfantatics.com dedicated to sharing case studies of so called intelligent fanatics - the archetype successful businessman profiled in these books. The aim is partly to guide investors in finding companies that will outperform thanks to great management, partly to help CEOs emulate the winning characteristics.Charlie Munger coined the expression intelligent fanatic. Idding’s and Cassel’s definition from the 2017 book reads as follows: “Founder, CEO or management team with unconventional ideas and a fanatical drive to build a high-performance organization. A learning machine that can quickly adapt to change. Able to create a trust based culture that aligns everyone to think like owners. Focused on acquiring, training and motivate their best talent. Their time horizon in in ten-year increments, not quarterly, and they invest in their business accordingly. Regardless of the industry, they are able to create an impenetrable moat that competitors initially cannot understand and eventually fear.” Almost every word in this definition is in my view critically important as an ingredient for - at least the chance of - sustained business success. The core of the term is however an obsessive drive towards a visionary goal guided by sharp analytical reasoning.The first book also offers a formula that is said to embody an intelligent fanatic:Intelligent Fanatic = (Long-term vision + Focus + Energy + Integrity + Intelligence) * ExecutionThe formula – more so than the definition – zooms in on how Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger have described the management qualities they search for. It is obvious that the authors are themselves standing on the shoulders of giants in their quest of trying to distill what it is that leads to business accomplishment. In the first book’s definition they had a second paragraph where an intelligent fanatic also could mean the “outsider CEO” of Thorndike. However, the capital allocation angle of business management isn’t at all as prominent among the intelligent fanatic case studies as in those of The Outsiders and this section was subsequently dropped. My feeling is that the authors by the second book had gained the confidence to move on from their towering heroes.These two books are very simple when it comes to their set up. A brief introduction and short conclusion frame 8-9 case studies of about 15-20 pages that each profile a – often relatively unknown - CEO and how he (the profiled intelligent fanatics are exclusively men) managed to steer his company to a roaring long-term success. No one will be surprised that the traits and actions from the definition show up in various forms in almost all chapters. The similarities certainly underline the point that there are key traits and actions that can lead to success but it also makes the chapters somewhat alike and thus the reading in my view becomes a bit repetitive.Iddings and Cassel deserve huge credit for their painstaking groundwork in finding, researching and presenting these CEOs in two books. Still, in my view, the next book from Intelligent Fanatics LLC cannot simply picture an additional batch of CEOs. The success criteria are now set (although it is always tough to weed out survivorship bias). The next step should according to me be to help investors detect indications of these criteria and present a methodology of how to handle tradeoffs. As a full-fledged member of the MicroCap Club, Ian's amazing community of intelligent stock sleuths, its great to see him share with the public his deep wisdom of what truly matters to small-cap investors - the jockey. This book was an engaging, easy to read tale of what it takes to build a successful company from the ground up. My book is already filled with highlights. The last chapter which summarizes the key basic characteristics of these empire builders is worth the price of admission alone.I know there are more Intelligent Fanatics out there, and I hope Ian and Sean are already planning a sequel!

Great book for investors and business owners. As I read the stories of the business people in this book I found myself very inspired to think about how I can apply the principals they used to my own small business. I was particularly impressed with how all of them were concerned about the success of their people and their willingness to think outside of the box of "conventional wisdom." Thanks to Iddings and Cassel for their work on this!

I received a copy of the book from Ian Cassel (Author of the book) at the MicroCap Leadership Summit in Chicago this fall. Very impressive read and I found the stories of the "Intelligent Fanatics" that Ian and Sean covered were interesting. I've been a member of MicroCapClub trying the find the next intelligent fanatic building a sustainable business before the masses find out about them. Looking forward to their 2nd book.
