After looking through many many watercolor how to books, this was the one I wanted to try. I have ordered and LOVED Robert Wade's other books and how freely he puts on say just three colors only and makes beautiful complete and looking detailed but they are not pictures. In my other books, he makes beautiful scenes that are very small and they come out with so much depth detail and value in color. This book new is expensive and when I first started wanting it, it was very expensive. I found it used and in excellent condition. It came as a hardback and is about a half inch thick. As a handbook I had hoped it would be one that would easily stay opened when I painted along with it. I have not used it yet, but I am so glad I added it to my art books.
I have a large number of Watercolor instruction books, DVDs and tapes. Seems I pick up something of value from each one. Having said that, I find myself going back to this handbook time and time again. I watch a section of the DVD (which is sold separately) and refer to the supporting material in the book. Wade's explanations and examples are well done. I especially like his numerous "Do It Yourself" assignments. If you're serious about greatly improving your watercolors and not being shy about letting someone outside your studio take a look at them, this book will put you to work (work is a key word here) in the right direction. This might be the best instruction book I own.
I wanted to really like this book. I liked the way it was laid out and I liked the works of the artist. But in the long run I thought it was just okay. The information is that which you would find in any good how to paint watercolor book. But what quite frankly annoyed me was the artist's self serving statements. Sure he is good but the book should emphasize how to do it, precisely and diligently, not at the cost of dropping in little mentions of the artist's awards, celebrity friends or whatever. Nice for him, but nobody learns because his or her teacher is friends with someone famous. That said, the book should stand on how much information it offers that is either unique or presented better than anywhere else. This book is not that unique and there are other how to books that are better at making techniques accessible to readers. Just looking at the author's wonderful work creates fans, not artists.
Love the lessons in this book and the clear explanations of the whys and wherefores of his methods. It is lovely to have the DVD to go with the book so you can see his brushwork and mixing in action. I bought both and am glad I did. Bless him for sharing his knowledge with all of us across the world.
A beautifully printed hard cover book by an extraordinary watercolor artist. The book is filled with outstanding examples of landscapes, cityscapes from all over the world. In addition to being an inspired World class watercolor artist, Robert Wade is also a great teacher, the book is filled with practical advise and hands on lessons on color mixing, painting people,skies,glazing,location painting and many other subjects.Just to be able to look at his outstanding paintings would easily justify buying this book.
Anything by Robert Wade is superb. He shares his philosophy, secrets and provides excellent practice exercises
I purchased this book based on a recommendation from an artist who teaches watercolor classes on the beautiful island of Kauai. I took his class and then purchased this book. I have enjoyed reading the book and utilizing the techniques and ideas presented. It runs the gamet of items from material selection, watercolor techniques, paint selection to how to make a business selling your own watercolor art. I think this book is well worth the money to have not only a reference book but also an inspirational book when a little inspiration is needed.
It is a superb book from the point of view of management and the technique of watercolor painting.What I wish to have is that the book has more demonstrations with paintings in watercolor in order to put into practice the concepts that Wade exposed in the different chapters of the book.
