Ellie May on Presidents' Day is tremendously engaging, and offers Hillary Homzie's distinctive storytelling grace and a lot of surprisingly interesting nonfiction info about several American presidents and the Pledge of Allegiance. There's also compelling and effective drama as Ellie May longs to become her class's "Flag Leader" despite her often awkward attempts to behave and win her teacher's approval. Last but not least there are so many witty and funny lines and moments. This evocative, compelling, character-driven book is superb.

This is the first book in a darling new chapter book series that features fun and expressive illustrations. I received a copy to use as a reader with the student that I mentor. We read the second book (Ellie May On April Fool’s Day) first and we both loved it. So, when I read Ellie May on President’s Day on my own, I was already familiar with the cast of characters in Ms. Silva’s second grade class.Hillary has done a wonderful job of capturing the antics and the angst of this age group. These stories subtly teach history and character building as Ellie May and her mates tackle life in the second grade. I highly recommend this series and it would make a wonderful gift for young readers.

Here's the thing...there are kid books that are entertaining and there are kid books that are well-intentioned but didactic and...um boring. Ellie May on President's Day manages to be sweet and engaging but Ellie May on President's Day also teaches kids the value of determination with a just right dose of American history.Ellie May is sweet and rambunctious, but she is determined and well meaning. Take her big, sweet personality and throw in some history about our founding fathers and you have a wonderful book that you'll love reading to your kids.The illustrations are darling and reflect a multi-ethnic school universe that is refreshing.This book would also make a great gift!

This book was, literally, “50 years in the making”. 2019 will bring the Annual Philadelphia Folk Fest (the LONGEST continuing music festival in North America ) to its 58th year. Just after the landmark 50th anniversary, volunteer festival photographers Eric Ring Jayne Toohey and John Lupton decided there should be an illustrated history of the festival to explain the founding to those who discovered it in the new Millennium and bring back memories for those – like me – who have been attending since the early 1970s.. It was not an easy task. They combed the thousands of photos in the PFF archives and contacted about 25 photographers to see what they had to share. I will admit that I was one of the 25 and 21 of my photos from 1970-73 are in the book. Because the sale of the book benefits the Philadelphia Folk Song Society – which organizes the Festival – I donated my images (as dis all the others) and I do not share in any proceeds from the book.With that said, I’ll be objective and say that there are, literally, hundreds (maybe even 1,000) photos of folk music legends that you won’t find elsewhere. The book has 256 pages chock full of photos and weighs in at a hefty FOUR POUNDS! There are color and black and white photos. And there is text too, provided by co-authors Lupton and Ring (Ring did the interviews). There is a great interview with now-retired Philly folk deejay icon Gene Shay who was the MC for the first 55 years! I learned stories even I never knew – including the night Bob Dylan showed up “to watch from the hill”. There are groupings by major artist and a section about the unusual campers (the campground is a city in itself for four days.)See the brief "amateur" video I've attached to this review to show some of the layout.There is a listing by year of which artist performed. To be honest, we wish there was an index of the photos by artist but with the time it would take the book – already two years delayed – would not have been available in time for the 2018 festival.So if you’ve EVER attended the Philly Folk Fest (or even wanted to) I can highly recommend this book. It is published by Schiffer,the well-known family publisher that does an amazing job on high-quality Antique, Art and Collectibles books.If you are just a folkie, look over the description to see just “some” of the performers who are included.And, if you buy this book, you’ll find yourself pulling it out often as you play your favorite “folk artist”.Most of the photographers (like me) are still “shooting” the festival but with the work involved I can’t see a similar volume being produced in the next 50 years!I hope you found this book both informative and helpful.Steve Ramm“Anything Phonographic”

This is a stunningly beautiful, well written, excellently produced work of love celebrating 50 years of the Philadelphia Folk Festival. Plenty of excellent photographs and blurbs on individual performers. Lists of performers through the years is worth the price all by itself. Like "DeadBase" for the folk inclined. 255 pages of marvelous. Great gift for the Folk music fan. I bought mine for myself.

Purchased this book at the Philadelphia Folk festival this past year. Beautiful photography and writing. A great resource for all things folk music. And specifically as it pertains to Philadelphia.

My son loves these books! He isn't much for coloring and pretty much has ADD, so I didn't have any expectations when we brought one camping last summer. He sat and did every single page while we were camping. Now he is seven and I still loves them, I like to save them for car trips and vacations. He is super absorbed in them and keeps him busy.

We were introduced to these books in a Chick-Fil-A meal and we love them! The quality of the stickers and the pages is awesome and my 6-year-old can do them by himself for busy work during days home. I didn’t appreciate the quality until we bought an off-brand from Walmart and the stickers weren’t very sticky and many would flip off the stickers page when trying to remove just one. It was miserable trying to complete the junky sticker book. I’d recommend these for anyone whose children like puzzles and patterns.

My husband has done every adult sticker paint book available on Amazon and this fall we ran out of options for a couple of months. So I got him this sticker paints for kids book to tide him over and he really likes it. The pictures are cute and the stickers all fit together well. The pictures work up faster than the pictures in the adult books and that's the only reason I gave it 4 stars as an adult book. Our grandchildren love it and for a child it would be a 5 star book.

My daughter absolutely loves these... she'll be five at the end of the year. But, it's very educations, it keeps her refreshed on counting, simple addition and subtraction, number recognition -- and she has to work hard to fit the sticker exactly at the shapes are cut -- she has a lot of fun with these. She made the giraffe picture yesterday, and she was so proud (it looks terrific), that she keeps staring at it from time to time! I promised we'd get a frame and hang it up! I bought some of the adult versions too, because my therapist has suggested those adult coloring books to assist with anxiety -- only, I really don't like to color. This is a GREAT alternative, and I enjoy working on these little puzzles so much... and the pictures turn out beautifully!

I thought this was kind of challenging for our little grandkids but the 9 year olds found it a little challenging and then very fun as they worked through each picture. Turned out to be cute pictures and they felt accomplishment in doing the pics. Entertaining for picky, pouty, bored, pre-teen girls that are too big for some toys and too little for other things!

These are so much fun for kids to do. Mine does it while I read to him at night. He is 9 and could probably have handled this from the age of 7 or so. Not for little kids. Some of the stickers are really small and they need some really good fine motor control to handle them, and know their numbers extremely well.

My 6 year son loves these books! The pages are al perforated so they can be taken out easily. The sticker pages are perforated as well so it’s easier to take them out to do the picture. He does these on the bus to school, while waiting for his brother to finish piano lessons, etc.

These were great activity books for the grandchildren. They worked diligently at them and were proud of the finished product. Even little 5 year olds hands were able to do it.
