This book is a must buy for all those inspiring game makers out there. I really got my money’s worth out of it. The book covers all the skills needed to create a full game from start to finish and gives example and code throughout. Unlike what the title says, it took me longer than a weekend to finish. I do not mind the extra time as I feel it added value to the book. The most time consuming part of the project for me was the making the different maps. The book offers the ability to download the maps from their website, but I wanted to make them myself. Again, this added to my enjoyment of the book. A negative about the maps in the book is that they are small and in black and white. For most thing, B&W is okay, but for the maps, they should have been larger and in color. I had to resort to looking on the internet for the map images. I found them, and although they were also small, they were in color and that helped. The book takes you through the development of the game by making two towns. The starting town and a hidden town the players find via a quest of sorts. There are 6 levels to the dungeon crawler presented in the book. The book teaches you how to make new characters, items, weapons, and even spells. The book not only tells you how to do it, it offers minor suggestions on how you could improve on what is in the book. The main game from the book is built solely from what is available in the basic game. There is a chapter at the end of the book that talks about how to improve the game with add-in scripts and other neat ideas, if you so desire.Overall I like this book a lot and recommend you pick it up if you enjoy making games and you want to know how to use the tools available with RPG Maker MV.

I almost didn't buy this book because of some of the negative reviews, I would have missed out on an excellent teaching tool. I have zero exp with rpg maker mv BUT I had an idea about the rpg I wanted to make and how I wanted it to work. I read the book cover to cover in a few hours and while reading it I had my own game in mind. I watched the author work through things I wanted to do. I am going to start building my game and will be leaning heavily on this book for reference as I still technically have no exp.

Its an easy to follow guide that get you started very quickly. Before you know it your already off track and creating things all on your own.

I got this book as part of the Humble Code Your Own Games bundle, and, man, I am glad I only paid $1 for it. RPG Maker MV can be more than a little obtuse and difficult to follow, but I'm sad to say this book only makes it worse.First and foremost, it seems like the book's editor was asleep on the job, because the book is absolutely packed full of digressions, half-formed thoughts, and constant references to RPG Maker VX Ace, the previous version of the software that has no bearing on the 'tutorials' at hand. This would be bad enough in any non-fiction book, but it's especially frustrating for a book that is supposed to be teaching you how to use a piece of software. Clarity should be the primary goal of anything designed as a tutorial, and this book has absolutely none of that.It is almost like the book is a direct transcription of what the author was saying as they messed around with the software, no editing, no revising for clarity, nothing.Every 'lesson' in the book goes like this: the author vaguely describes how to do something (usually with a reference to how RPG Maker VX Ace was better or different) without any explanation for why you should be doing it or what you're actually making. He then says "then do it some more for the other things like this" and then we're back onto another digression.I'll share with you the line that broke me and made me decide going further with this book was not worth my time. I should point out this was on page 12:"Anyway, let’s get back to working on our transfer events. I believe we were about to make the exterior transfer event. This time, let’s use one of my favorite transfer event trimming devices: the Parallel trigger."It's like having an absentminded professor fumble his way through a half-remembered lesson he taught twenty years ago. I should point out that at this point in the 'tutorial' I had literally just been introduced to Transfer Events and didn't have any real comprehension on what they were used for...now the author is sharing his own work-around to mess with the program's built-in event handling process. It's a shame that there are not many good tutorial resources for RPG Maker MV, as it seems like a nice, powerful program for making RPGs. It's also a shame that Apress would have the gall to publish this incomprehensible mess of a book.

This was not so much like a colorful collection of western fiction but more like short vignettes, stories and novellas about what it was like to be a cowboy. There were many stories, but what I got out of it was a feel for a time and place. Cowboy life was mostly depicted from the point of view of an ordinary range rider, the importance of a chuck wagon, a good horse (which had to be tamed and trained) and the importance of the basic gear. Gear was big deal. So many description of different hats (advantages of various, shapes, sizes and materials), and saddles, and chaps, and bedding, and neckerchiefs and boots, and rain slickers, and ropes or lariats, rifles or hand guns, and the riding, roping and other skills needed and valued; all this and more was covered in bits and pieces in various stories. Also attitudes, it seemed to me that the prevailing view of many of the writers was looking back to a younger self and seeing what had to have been a pretty harsh existence through the eyes of someone who saw this as pure freedom. The western range areas crossed many states from Texas north, the land was not lush and a number of times it was mentioned that at least 25 acres were need to support a cow. Cattle were driven between winier and summer ranges, and the open government land was regarded as rightfully theirs. (This was from the cowboy perspective, very little of the stories concerned the owners). Anything that impinged on the migration was regarded with anything from sadness (a personal sense of loss) to rage. Some disliked the Indians for being in their way or for protecting what had been theirs, some mentioned dislike of Mexicans basically, it seemed, because of language difficulties and cultural differences (though they admired their horsemanship). The personal prejudices did not seem to extend to those they worked with on their team, but to the "others". However, the worst resentment was reserved for those who interfered with their use of the land, like rustlers, like sheepherders (as cattle could not follow sheep, who ate to the nubs), and like farmers and like any hell bred souls who put up barbed wire fences. The cowboy ideal seemed to be someone who was hard working and honest and who pulled his own weight and helped his team, though hot tempered, rowdy, spendthrift, and a loner described many. The teller of tall tales was valued round the campfire and a good cook was prized. Also the cowboy seemed aware of his mystique and in those towns, like bustling Chicago, they might get treated with a bit of celebrity as they swaggered through the areas near the stock yards. The western towns welcomed them as they spent about all they made and the towns usually tolerated quite a bit of shenanigans. The stories made it easy to start and stop. The writing, while not always the best, seemed to be natural and unaffected and brought an era alive to me. I felt this compilation well selected and well worth the read.

If book titles were covered by "truth in advertising" laws, this book would be called Some Fairly Entertaining short Stories About Cowboys. Just about every "cowboy story" by Zane Grey or Larry McMurtry, puts this collection to shame. If you love to read, whatever, buy this book. It reads easy & quickly, but if you love great westerns, read Comanche Moon, Dead Man's Walk, Lonesome Dove & The Streets Of Laredo by Larry McMurtry.

As a collection of "stories", this is okay only if you realize they mean a little fiction and a lot of memoir. As I really wanted fiction, this was a drawback. Even as fiction, it falls short since many of the fiction entries are merely sections of longer works, and do not therefore stand well on their own.

Some of these stories are interesting and hold your interest. Some obviously are lifted from books & are confusing to the reader who is dropped into the middle of a story & dumped out, unsure what it was all about. It’s a great book if you’re interested in what real cowboying was like. Hint: Not very glamorous and damned hard work!

Many different stories by many different with many different author's. Some stories very good, some not so good but all very interesting. Some stories very realistic and some just good fiction.

Most (95%) of these stories are great! And there is a nice variety of story types. I love the diversity. Some are serious, some informative, some are just plain funny. I love that works by Mark Twain, Zane Grey, and Teddy Roosevelt are included! Great read!

These aren't "stories" as in fictional westerns. Instead what you have is a bunch of old-timers telling you about what it was like back in the day. How could anything be better?

This was a great compilation of stories from many different sources. It was enlightening how so many of the authors captured the same qualities of the cowboy life. The authors of these 'yarns' was impressive; from Russell to T. Roosevelt to Mark Twain. The unique quality was the language itself. Oftimes you had to pause and interpret what the words really meant.

Amazon.com Review

If you're a "just the facts, ma'am" kind of person, Windows NT Registry will call to you like the siren on the rocks. Yet another in the New Riders networking series, this book delivers the goods on fine-tuning your network operations via the Windows NT Registry, considered the nerve center of the operating system. Author Sandra Osborne, longtime programmer and Windows expert, presents the material in a straightforward, tough-to-argue-with style that's geared exclusively to the networking professional. Divided into three sections, Windows NT Registry tackles hardware issues, workstation components, and network client issues. Osborne cuts right to the chase in each chapter, briefly explaining the task at hand and then directing you to the precise location in the Registry from which you can complete it. In addition, you get loads of useful orientation screenshots, tables that consolidate information on various settings, sample commands, and an appendix that contains a complete listing of the Windows NT Registry keys. The liberally splattered quasi footnotes that contain tips, troubleshooting advice, warnings, and author notes detailing Osborne's personal experience with various components of the Registry are bonuses. A fantastic resource, this is an indispensable guide for those whose occupation requires them to regularly wrestle with NT. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt

The bulk of the book is devoted to describing the Registry entries controlled by the Control Panel interfaces and other applets. Approximately 25% of the volume is a raw dump of a NT registry. If you are looking for how to enable command completion in a DOS window, or other interesting tidbits, this is not the book. One of the few books I've ever found so useless that I've bothered to return it -- fortunately, Amazon.com makes returns quite painless.

This book explains the makeup of the Windows NT Registry in great detail. It gives the reader detailed insight on how the registry can customized to work for her/him.

I've reviewed almost every book on the Windows Registry and this is finally the book I've been looking for.The other books cover how to use RegEdit and RegEdt32 well, but they fail to give any kind of comprehensive list of registry settings. This book does. It's divided into chapters where each one covers a specific topic and all of the registry settings which apply. Very well organized. You owe it to yourself to add this book to your collection.
