A very well-written book about large-game hunting opportunities in modern-day Europe, especially in former 'Iron-Curtain' countries!Hunting opportunities in these steeped-in-hunting-traditions countries, differ significantly from ours in America, as do many of the species that are available for "harvesting". Such big game hunting opportunities, too, are not readily-available to most everyone as it is, for the most part, here in the United States. Availability and access to public lands, as well as private lands in the U.S. allows the vast majority of American citizens and visitors from other countries wonderful hunting opportunities to hunt freely, once basic hunting education requirements, firearms-purchasing requirements, and an individual state's hunting license/game-tags are purchased. It's definitely NOT that easy in Europe. ACCESS to land and hunting is strictly controlled in all European countries by land-owners, and securing access via 'invitation' or by fee-payment can be difficult and very expensive. An individual's firearms-type(s), caliber(s), quantities of ammunition in-possession, their licensing and use, as well as 'safe' home-storage too, is strictly regulated and varies from country to country, as does the strict requirements for applying-for and receiving a hunting-license.This book is about the excellent large-game hunting, though ..and the wonderful hunting traditions that still are found in Europe!'Hunter's are hunters' no matter where we live, and WE share in common the tremendous love for the wild game which we pursue, as well as for ALL other wildlife which benefit from monies that come from the 'hunter's investment'....A GREAT 'READ"!
Peter Horn takes you on the hunt!!I felt the cool moist air against my chest as I quietly zipped up my fleece liner looking out over the rolling hills….with some trepidation I descended the high stand, unsure if the near freezing night deposited some ice on the log ladder……as we entered the beautiful Hungarian forest and began our stalking, I sensed the musty bouquet of the noble red stag. All of those senses were overwhelmingly vibrant as I found myself nodding off stirring somewhere between asleep and fully awake.I had imagined being on a magnificent hunt in the deep woodlands of Hungary; I was taken there by the vivid prose in his book .A real joy to read.
What a great book! I read it in one sitting. The author, Peter Horn, makes you feel as if you are hunting in Eastern Europe with him. This book is not just sentences woven together, but a magnificent experience. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to not only learn about hunting but Hungary and Romania as well.
A very good read about opening up hunting in eastern Europe as the Iron Curtain was disintegrating.
easy reading
Wonderful book by Peter Lewis Horn III. Great hunting stories in the European tradition. Red Stag, Wild Boar, Fallow Deer, Roe Deer, Wolf and Brown Bear, as well as upland game and water foul. Much valuable information on not only the different types of game ,but also how they are hunted. Hunting Across The Danube is a treasure map of some of the least known and beast places to hunt in Eastern Europe. Peter Horns expertise and experiences in hunting this area are a must read for anyone thinking of hunting here. Live the thrill of the hunt, crisp mornings, smoky hunting jackets, the smell of pine trees world class game. Great book, a good read. I enjoyed the stories.
From 2005-2007, I was fortunate enough to serve as the U. S. Ambassador to Slovakia, a country for whom the Danube has exerted great historical influence. Yet it is away from the banks of the river, in, as Peter Horn suggests in the title to this very fine book, the fields, forests, and mountains, that I experienced the Slovak tradition and culture at its natural best. The boar, stag, roebuck, mufflon, and fowl deer hunts, both as organized social events or getaways on a slow diplomatic weekend, are my fondest memories of my service. And Peter Horn, in this wonderful collection of Eastern European hunting snippets, captures the magic perfectly. While the Austria-Hungarian empire is a thing of the past, the commonality of species and hunting ethic continues across the region. As I read of a Romanian jelen (stag) hunt, I remembered my first stag in the beech forests near Banska Bystrica. And that wonderful thing we don't have here in the states, the summer hunt--primarily for roebuck. My hats off to Mr. Horn. At a minimum. he is partly responsible for prompting me for this summer's trek back for roebuck.Skip Vallee, U. S. Ambassador, retired.
This is a brilliant book. From any perspective it fascinates. I bought it to read about the hunting in Hungary and Romania and I assure you it doesn't disappoint. Peter Horn brings the hunting expeditions to life as he recounts tale after tale of his and others' adventures. And it is a travelogue, opening to me a part of the world I know very little of and recent political history has contrived to keep wrapped in cottonwool so that in part it is still in a time warp. It all sounds magnificent and unspoilt and I can't wait to get there. And to top it all off, it is a history tale, Ceaucescu interwoven with Dracula and the fairy tales. I now feel I have experienced Little Red Riding Hood's Europe. Thank you Peter.
