The Trouble with Lions: A Glasgow Vet in Africa

Review

"Haigh's writing style is informative and entertaining all in the same breath. His stories weave animal history and legend together with his own experiences to create a vivid picture of the wildlife situation in Africa.... While the title of the book may lead you to believe it is just about the king of the jungle, the cast of animal characters is quite varied. Haigh has tended to rhinos, elephants, wild dogs, hyenas, chimpanzees, cattle, and many other creatures, both large and small in the wilds of Africa. The Trouble with Lions gives you a closer look at the wild animals that once roamed free and plentiful across a continent; you'll find no better guide than Dr. Jerry Haigh." Carmen Klassen, The StarPhoenix, June 28, 2008"Going on safari in Africa is something most people may have on their bucket list. In his memoir of his life and work while living in Africa, author Jerry High, a Glasgow-schooled veterinarian takes the reader through Kenya Now and Then (1965-1975), Forested Africa and the Bushmeat Crisis (1995-2007), The Trouble with Lions (1997), and On the Ground in Uganda (2002-2007). Thoughtfully written and including captivating photos; will delight readers. Recommended for adult readers." Tonya Thul-Theis, Reviewer's Bookwatch, October 2008"Have you ever had the experience of meeting someone who makes a distant part of the world, or a different way or life, make sense to you for the first time? Reading Jerry Haigh's 'The Trouble With Lions' is like that. There are many good story tellers out there, and Haigh is one of them. But here's the big difference--he has decades of unique, fascinating experience to back it up. He's a wildlife veterinarian, and his tales of treating lions, and rhinos, and all sorts of other animals in Africa are fascinating--they're like James Herriot's 'All Creatures Great and Small,' except it's All Creatures Great and Greater. But as fun, and often funny, as Haigh's tales are, the real value of 'The Trouble With Lions' lies in the way he sees the world, and the ways in which humans relate to each other and to the wildlife and nature around them. This isn't just a book about one man's experiences. It's a story about Africa, and its people, and its wildlife, and the dramatic, often heartbreaking changes all three have experienced over the last 4 decades. 'The Trouble With Lions' is an excellent book for lovers of Africa, and adventure, and a good tale well told. But it will also provide valuable context and open readers' eyes to the deep connections between animals and nature and current events--like the ongoing conflict in the Congo, and last year's post-election violence in Kenya. Highly recommended." Thomas Hayden, San Francisco, CA, December 23, 2008"Fascinating, educational, funny and beautifully illustrated, this book gives us a glimpse of the life of a veterinarian working in modern-day Africa. Lions, rhinos and chimpanzees are among the animals Dr. Haigh treats and they are all sadly under great stress and pressure as their natural habitat slowly disappears." Juror, Saskatchewan Book Awards, 2008"Jerry Haigh takes us into the world of rhinos and lions in Africa and describes his adventures with clear insight and compassion." Juror, Saskatchewan Book Awards, 2008"This is a beautifully told, rich account of another landscape, another country; Jerry Haigh weaves an endlessly complex and layered tale of humans and animals." Juror, Saskatchewan Book Awards, 2008"The Trouble with Lions chronicles the adventures of a veterinarian in Africa, escorting us far off the beaten path of nature documentaries and tourist safaris, ultimately breaking our hearts with the overwhelming evidence that Africa`s great cavalcade of beasts and wild places will disappear in our lifetime." Juror, Saskatchewan Book Awards, 2008"The Trouble with Lions, Jerry Haigh`s fast-paced memoir of his years practicing wild-animal medicine in the jungles and plains of Africa, is as disturbing as it is fascinating: a rare glimpse into a little-known and quickly vanishing world." Juror, Saskatchewan Book Awards, 2008"Haigh (veterinary medicine, U. of Saskatchewan), a hearty type with few complaints about living rough alongside his patients, explains the pressures of keeping animals alive and at peace with the humans around them, a difficult task at best and often heartbreaking. He describes preservation efforts and how they apply to elephants, rhinos, painted dogs, and the various species dubbed `bushmeat.` He explores the national park system set up to keep animals and humans as happy and well-fed as possible, the trouble with well-meaning amateurs, and the need for continuous education about some of the most fascinating creatures in the world." SciTech Book News, December 2008"He has wrestled rhinos, elephants and lions in Africa, studied seals on Sable Island, tested reindeer in Mongolia and carried out research work on bison, deer, elk and polar bears in Canada. He continues to work on the front lines of what he calls 'the longest running wars on the planet – the war between wild animals and humans.' ... Haigh ... was veterinarian at the Saskatoon Zoo for 16 years, and has been a member of the faculty of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine since 1975. ... In February 2008, Haigh and his wife took their sixth group of ten students to Uganda. A total of 59 students have participated since he set up the program in 2003. Several students from Africa also take the course concurrently and this is leading to ongoing cross-cultural professional association." Robert White, The Neighbourhood Express, March 30, 2008

From the Back Cover

"The trouble with lions is that while you are conducting a pregnancy test, you need to be equally, if not more, aware of what you can learn from the lion's other end." Jerry Haigh Such is the kind of wry, canny wisdom that Jerry Haigh brings home with his fascinating collection of stories about working with wild animals in Africa. Conversational in tone, conservational in theme, you will be right beside Jerry, wife Jo, and a colourful cast of vets, guides, and wardens as they scour Africa's sprawling vistas, troubleshooting lions, rhinos, humans, and other indigenous mammals. Veterinarians, conservationists, and fans of real-life adventure tales will want to keep this memoir handy on the dashboards of their Land Cruisers. "Dr. Haigh has written a book that tells the interconnected stories of people, agriculture, and wildlife conservation, about species as diverse as rhinos, chimpanzees, domestic cattle, and Ugandan kob. In writing The Trouble With Lions, as in choosing a career as a veterinarian and teacher, Dr. Haigh made a decision to make a difference. His book will make you want to do the same." Jane Goodall, from the Foreword A Glasgow-schooled veterinarian, Jerry Haigh developed much of his wildlife expertise and storytelling acumen over years of working and living in Africa with his wife Jo. He currently works at the University of Saskatchewan's Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon. Praise for Jerry Haigh's first Africa memoir, Wrestling with Rhinos: "...a lively and detailed glimpse into the life and thoughts of a dedicated and down-to-earth young veterinarian as he experienced Kenyan life." Elizabeth Abbott, The Globe and Mail "Wrestling with Rhinos reads like a James Herriott on safari, filled with amusing anecdotes, as well as more serious life-threatening situations." The Trouble with Lions: A Glasgow Vet in Africa (Wayfarer)Jerry Haigh has written a book that is both an interesting read as well as being informative and thought provoking. He manages to balance his own personal, often funny anecdotes of just being a vet and all the challenges that that entails with the more serious subject of wildlife conservation and the problems and conflicts that face local people as well as the authorities and generally puts forward a good unbiased viewpoint. Before reading this book, I had no idea how complex the situation is.I also found it interesting to see how much things have changed over the many years that Gerry has been working with wildlife and how much of a trailblazer he was in his early years of treating and translocating animals. It is all written in an easy conversational style - even though he goes off at a tanget sometimes - with lots of personal touches. I noticed, for example, that when particular incidents are described, they are often associated with what he had to eat at the time! Well worth reading.

is that you get the impression that it was not proof-read. The typos are terrible and take away a lot of the enjoyment of an otherwise interesting book.Shame

From North American Bison to African Rhino, this book gives the reader an insight into what is happening in today's African wildlife and human conflict from a veterinarian's perspective. Dr Haigh brings us along on his journey to Africa with Canadian Veterinary students.

I really liked being exposed to non-Greek or Norse gods, as those pantheons seem to be the only ones anyone ever writes about anymore. Which is surprising, especially when those stories are for kids, because Greek and especially Norse gods were kind of… jerks. Awful jerks. But the forgotten gods in this other world were from a bunch of different cultures:Ayiyi, a spider trickster god from Ghana.Gu, the Fon (Benin and Togo) god of iron and war.Priparchis, the Baltic (Lithuania, Latvia, and Prussia) god of piglets. And so on!Yes, I had to look them up to determine where they were from. To be super honest, I thought Priparchis would be Roman, but I’m glad he’s not! There are so many amazing unknown pantheons out there. I’d love to see them more often!Besides exposure to fresh gods, this book was fun from the get-go. I read it without having read Book #1 in the series, and I could still totally track what was happening. It's a great story kids will love!

Gosnell: The Untold Story of America's Most Prolific Serial Killer, by Ann McElhinney

Review

"Hollywood could not conjure up a villain more barbaric and cold-blooded than true-life serial killer Kermit Gosnell. Investigative journalists Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer take you face to face with Philadelphia's baby butcher in this gripping exposé. But the story is especially chilling because he did not act alone. The true horror lies in Gosnell's ghoulish gallery of enablers--feckless government bureaucrats, abortion radicals, and an AWOL media. McElhinney and McAleer are unflinching torchbearers of truth. This book is a public service." --Michelle Malkin, author of Culture of Corruption and Unhinged: Exposing Liberals Gone Wild "Gosnell reads like a literary Criminal Minds. This deftly-written, gripping, and graphic account of the arrest and grand jury investigation into Kermit Gosnell's nightmarish house of horrors reveals the truth about the monster who murdered with no compunction and kept ghastly trophies of his victims. Gosnell thoroughly reports the facts the mainstream press largely ignored: that, for years, complaints about unsafe conditions and even fatal malpractice at Gosnell's clinic were met with zero action, so concerned were the powers-that-be with protecting unfettered access to abortion. Gosnell indicts a system that, in the name of women's "reproductive health," failed to do anything to protect the women and born-alive infants who were slaughtered at 3801 Lancaster Avenue."--Maria McFadden Maffucci, editor, Human Life Review "Ann and Phelim courageously tell the heart-wrenching, shocking story previously ignored, one that every American needs to read. With each page, abortionist Kermit Gosnell takes his place in American history as a monster whose victims were the most innocent and helpless among us."--Katie Pavlich, editor, Townhall.com "In this historic book, Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer meticulously record the harrowing true-crime story of Kermit Gosnell's barbaric abortion and infanticide business. Every American needs to read Gosnell, because the atrocities he committed, with the knowledge and support of public authorities, demand that we answer what we really believe about human dignity and the law's equal protection for the most vulnerable."--David Daleiden, the undercover reporter behind the Center for Medical Progress videos that exposed Planned Parenthood's baby parts business "Warning: once you start reading this, you will not be able to put it down. It will grip you from the first page and not let you go. No matter what pre-judgments you may have when you begin, they will be challenged."--Connie Marshner, pro-life strategist and CEO of Connie Marshner & Associates

It is the silence of others, despite the grotesque nature of the crimes committed, that continues to bewilder me as I read this startling book. Thankfully, filmmakers Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer refused to avert their investigative glare from the inhumane travesty conducted in Philadelphia—the mutilated, mass killing of born-alive infants within the seedy walls of the Women’s Medical Society Clinic by a certain Doctor Kermit Gosnell. This ‘Doctor’ eschewed the Hippocratic oath and human decency. Instead, Kermit Gosnell chose a bleak path nearer to that of Josef ‘The Angel of Death’ Mengele. Mengele did not act alone. His grizzly deeds in Auschwitz were government sanctioned.Nor did Kermit Gosnell act in isolation. The complicit role activist media, social radicals, medical colleagues, and incompetent (politicized) government played in perpetuating his crimes is an indictment of the moral wasteland we’re becoming. This is not about equating Gosnell’s crime to the horrific actions of Mengele, except to illustrate contemporary society’s refusal to learn from the past. If we did care, these blood-curdling crimes against babies would have ended earlier. If we did care, a caring nation would collectively march in the streets demanding answers. Instead, there’s muted silence and politicized obfuscation. For me, this telling of the Gosnell nightmare is the first salvo in the fight for our very souls, and a diminishing chance to avoid us being judged barbaric. It is not okay to set aside fundamental moral principles (by either omission or commission) in the pursuit of blindly furthering an ideology. And, it’s never acceptable to contrive distorted truths and false claims (rationalized that it’s ‘for the greater good’) as a justification for the darkest of human behavior. In that sense, this book provoked in me a reaction well beyond the Pro-Choice/Pro-Life debate. It touched the core of what it truly means to be an empathetic, civilized society; and how the reprehensible conduct of some bad actors destroys it for all of us. As such, authors McElhinney and McAleer have my thanks. I regard them as ‘canaries in the coalmine’ alerting us, American society, to the consequences of turning a blind eye to the inhumane deeds of a select few. If we continue to get this wrong and allow enablers to disassemble facts in order to cover up crimes against the feeblest among us, history will judge us all harshly.“Gosnell” is a tough read, but a civilized society has the responsibility to pursue the truth wherever it may take us. There should be zero tolerance for cover-ups or dubious rationales, no matter where one resides on the ideological spectrum. In that spirit, I recommend “Gosnell” as required reading in all institutions dedicated to social sciences, moral ethics, governance, and medicine.

Whether one is Pro-Life or Pro-Choice, he needs to take the time to read this compelling account of Kermit Gosnell's abortion clinic. Horrors were perpetrated on desperate, innocent women while government bureaucrats repeatedly turned a blind eye, Why? Amazing. Also amazing, that Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer had the courage to expose this monster as well as the cruelty of his abortions.

Kudos to McElhinney and McAleer for presenting one of the most gripping, yet under-reported, true crime stories of our time. This book is a clear, well researched book that makes you feel like you’re reading a script for ‘Criminal Minds’. It is also a provocative look at the hypocrisy of a revolution to provide women with “choice”. McElhinney & McAleer expose essential facts necessary for honest debate about the greatest moral question facing our nation today. I challenge every American woman to read this book to understand the story and the culture that has been purposefully kept from public view. I am sickened by the facts, sad beyond words for the victims, ashamed of my ignorance, and will be haunted by this book for quite some time to come.

Kermit Gosnell was a Philadelphia abortionist who decided that allowing babies to be born and then killing them was either more efficient, easier, or, if we are to see him as a serial killer, more rewarding than killing them in-utero. This book tells the tale of how he was caught and of the trial that followed. The pacing is quick and thrilling. The writers, investigative journalists, leave no stone unturned and have a keen sense of how to convey the human cost of the events on all involved. The story is also obviously extremely emotional for the writers and that comes through. The tale of how Gosnell was caught and what came out during the trial are surreal and unbelievable. Were it not for the Grand Jury testimony which McAleer and McElhinney used as their primary source and the interviews with law enforcement and Gosnell himself to verify the facts, one would be tempted to think the whole thing was fiction. Tragically, it was not. The book's tone and tension reflects this with a balance of the excitement of discovery with the sadness and horror at what was discovered. This book is simultaneously informative, engaging, terrifying and eye opening. It is a true-crime page-turner but also hard to digest when one realizes that it describes actual events and tragedy. Finally, as someone who is agnostic on the politics of abortion, I found the book to be an important read and one that ultimately forces the reader to deal with the deep moral, emotional and philosophical questions that must be grappled with if we are to be honest with ourselves with regards to this issue.

This book made me want to scream at times, cry a lot, want to vomit. It should be read by pro-life advocates and pro- choice advocates. That this man was able to kill so many, defenseless babies is beyond my comprehension. That this could be allowed to happen in this clinic for so long, makes me wonder in how many other clinics it is happening. It's not about abortion. It's about murder!

The book is a compendium of what can happen when every safety net fails, the corruption goes all the way to the governor, the procedures, the filth, uneducated and unqualified staff administering powerful drugs, bureaucrats ignoring the most damning reports, humans who had long since forgotten that they were human, and by the grace of God a few people who stood up and said this can't go on. How powerful case study and what can go wrong, you won't regret reading it you'll think about it for weeks.
