I got this book based on the other reviews which were mostly positive and I have to say that I was very disappointed. I know reading a negative review isn't as appealing as a positive one, but I think pause should be taken before ordering this book. Self Defeating Behaviors is a great title with little content. As the other reviewers have noted, it does nothing but describe the problem with little practical insight as to how to address it. The description of the problem is also very dry and lengthy. It could have been done in 10 pages, the authors do it in 200 pages so you have to hear the same thing over and over and over again. I found that of little value, especially in light of the fact that there was almost nothing in regards to correcting such behavior.I'm guessing most people read self help books for the purpose of betterment. They want to improve their lives, not just read something 20 times over and over again about what the problem is. The authors simply believe that the problem is that the process of decision making becomes relegated to the subconscious mind over time and that the subconscious can make negative decisions instead of positive ones. There, that one sentence, gives you the whole gist of this book. They give no practical insight as to how to solve this problem, they merely describe it in dull, psychological text type writing. I was very disappointed. I am writing this review for the next person who might be tempted by the title, not realizing it has nothing to offer in terms of personal growth, merely description of a problem and a psychological description.

This book I found to be extremely helpful. The book likes to posit the belief that while it is not your fault for adapting a self-defeating behavior, it is your fault for maintaining it in perpetuity.The manner in which this book is set up is very helpful, first they call us to understand the nature and process of the Self-Defeating Path then with that understanding in place show us the Path of Breakthrough, the author also does a wonderful job of presenting case studies and following those case studies through out the book to show us how they work.I used this to help figure out ways to break out of one self-defeating behavior pattern, and will probably replicate this going forward into others to help me come out a better person, they helped me a lot.

I bought this book based on the positive reviews and I was completely disappointed. No practical, truly helpful advice. Just a man who likes to hear himself talk.

Our society doesn't give a damn how we feel or whether we have meaning in our lives. In fact, society doesn't care whether we live or die. When I say society, I also mean those who set up society.In the introduction of the book, it states, "For all its virtues, our culture is in many ways toxic to humans, and that the by-products of its systems and structures impose negative experiences on most people." So if you sometimes get to feeling like life is pushing you around, you are 1000% correct.An oligarchy is a small group of people having control of a country, organization, or institution. Pick up a dollar bill and at the top of the bill are the words Federal Reserve. Then look up who is the Federal Reserve. These are them that make up the oligarchy.If you want and alternative to this life that is orchestrated by an oligarchy, then you might want to read the book that I mentioned.The Serenity Prayer suggests to know what you cannot change and what you can. I am currently reading the history of the Serenity Prayer written by the daughter of its author. In her book, she says that it should read, "God, grant me the grace." She says that grace is something we have to prepare for.If you want and alternative to this life that is orchestrated by an oligarchy, then you might want to read this book: Self-Defeating Behaviors. I agree with this author who says we have to understand the origin of our self-defeating behaviors, how they keep going, where we practice them, and how and where we can replace them.This book is worth the read even if they only let you off the hook of blame; we are very limited on what we can do in this sometimes sick and self perpetuating society.

I'm not a psychologist so I can't debate his techniques but this book has helped me observe myself and I always find myself thinking back to something I read. It can be wordy and complex but if you really focus it all makes sense and you know exactly what he means. I like the way he connects things like faulty assumptions and the consequences it leads to if you make the wrong choice; it makes breaking habits or addictions just that much easier. I added pictures of the Table of Contents that might help explain what its touches on. It touches on so many aspects psychologically and you have to add it to your self help collection. <3

Really applicable to life. Was able to understand the path of my decision making regarding certain topics and the subsequent outcome that follows.

I have previously studied Wheelock's Latin and progressed through 2/3 of the text by myself. It is a great instruction method for laying a foundation in classical latin. Since I immersed myself in writing, reading, and speaking it aloud I made a very strong connection and retained much of what I learned. However, I like the pedagogical approach this book offers and decided to purchase it: speaking repetition is the next best thing to having actual conversations.My only complaint is that since I downloaded it for use on my Kindle Fire 7 via the cloud reader the features are seriously lacking. Primarily because the text does not rotate for wide screen viewing and because of this the text is incredibly small. The plain reading text is a slight strain and the side information or words and definitions are mostly unreadable except in the most favorable of lighting situations. I'm not sure if all these problems are due to the fact that it wasn't actually formatted for my version of Kindle Fire 7. IMHO, if your going to make an ebook available and charge money for it take into account your customers and achieve an acceptable degree of functionality so that it actually makes more sense to purchase it an ebook version as opposed to a printed version.

I can't give this book anything other than five stars. If you are wanting to learn Latin as a living language, this is THE book. I cannot emphasize this enough. There is no other book you should be considering for the method this book uses, and within the terms of that method, it is clever and brilliant.I'm someone who started Latin late in life as my college language requirement, using Wheelock's and the grammar first approach. I feel like I would not have had success in learning the Orberg way without that formal grammar background, but that is my own sentiment.The order in which this book thinks about and uses Latin in combination with a clever and cumulative approach to its storytelling is a lovely thing, and if you are interested in this book and familiar with its goal of teaching Latin with Latin, get it. It's a lovely primer.

I really like the approach of this book. I bought it as a complete novice to Latin. I like the inductive, learn-by-reading method this book uses. The nice illustrations and book design add to my pleasure when working in this book.Unfortunately, for me at least, the readings are mostly uninteresting. They aren't really stories - they lack most of the elements that make a story: interesting characters or situations, suspense and meaningful stakes, obstacles and villains, character transformation, etc. There are some more interesting accounts of myths, etc. toward the end. But, overall, I found the readings tedious, which is a major drawback for a self-learner like me trying to self-motivate to study. If you can force yourself read this book, you will learn a lot of Latin, however. I use this book as additional Latin practice, after other books.I also bought the audio readings for this book. As a self-learner, these have been invaluable to hear how things should be pronounced. I also like to just repeatedly listen to get a better feel for the language. The audio is quite expensive - EXCEPT for here on Amazon, where it's sold a drastically lower price. It is here: Familia Romana: Latine Audio. This is the classical pronunciation. There is also a "church Latin" pronunciation available, found here: Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata Pars I: Familia Romana Latine Audio: Ecclesiastical Pronunciation.I'm an adult learning Latin on my own. I like to also learn grammar along the way. So I have decided to use this book a supplement, to practice reading Latin. My main book will be the Cambridge series, which I love. The first book is Cambridge Latin Course Unit 1 Student's Text North American edition. (There is also a cheaper paperback version.) I believe there are grammar supplements for this Lingua Latina series, too, but I had heard good things about the Cambridge books so I just went with that. I was also feeling a bit poor after paying so much for this book (I bought the Cambridge books used and very cheap.)

I recommend this book to any new clients where I find a lack of symmetry between where the leadership is trying to direct the firm and where the employees are actually taking it. Of all the management books at Amazon, this is the one Shareholders should want on the desks of employees creating value for them.Like most good management books, this one rewards the reader early with insights, and keeps them coming without the drone of a McKinsey sales pitch. Ever since college, I’ve made a point of highlighting and notating almost any book I read. In reviewing my highlighting of this text I note that the examples are, once again, the type which almost anyone can follow. They communicate nuance without losing the lay reader and for this reason I find the text is not only helpful for those working in a large corporate environment, but also helpful for employees building a startup business.In term of getting value for what you paid, this text is a real bargain.

Value is one of the best books I've read that cuts to the core of how businesses should operate. It focuses the reader on the four ways that value is created and guides us through both business and market implications for companies who create value versus those that focus on the wrong things. Messrs. Koller, Dobbs and Huyett cover a number of topics that any business leader or investor would find useful.The first part of the book identifies the four pillars of value and helps to answer the following questions:1) When is growth or return on invested capital more important? How does each increase value?2) How do you identify activities that add value versus ones either diminish value or shift risk around?3) How do you spot a company on the wrong end of the "expectations treadmill" and what are the implications?4) How can you take advantage of the "Best Owner" principle? What are the implications for M&A?In the second part of the book, the authors break down the stock market in aggregate. They help the reader understand how the market works, compare the link between interest rates and inflation with P/E performance over the last 100 years, model the stock market and explain where and why stock market bubbles occur. Next, they discuss the problems with earnings management and show what a poor job "consensus earnings" do at actually forecasting the future. Their message to managers is just don't do it.In part three, the authors dive into value creation and discuss what drives return on capital. They break down return on invested capital by industry segment from 1965-2007 and provide the reader with insights into why some industries perform better than others. For investors, this segment is particularly interesting as the book explains that the ROIC advantages or disadvantages of specific industries tend to be sticky meaning we should expect those with an advantage to retain it barring any major structural shifts. The book then explores growth, discusses why growth is difficult to sustain and reviews how different types of growth are rewarded in the market.The book discusses the following concepts in great detail including portfolio theory (The Business Portfolio ch. 12), M&A (ch. 13), risk (ch. 14), capital structure (ch. 15) and investor communications (ch. 16). These sections all offer insight and pose questions that will make managers rethink how they address these topics. With portfolio theory, the authors explain how the best owner principle should drive what businesses a company operates. In M&A, the book takes a look at what makes a good versus bad acquisition. In risk, the reader gets help thinking through external risks and how to help manage these risks. Chapter 15 discusses capital structures and how companies should think through their debt-to-equity mix, identify the "savings" from debt versus equity, and discuss how to return excess free cash flow to investors. In chapter 16 the authors explore investor communications in detail and describe what types of activities are helpful versus those that do not add much value.The book closes out with a final chapter, entitled Managing for Value, that provides the "so what" of the topics discussed. It provides guidance for how managers and boards should use the four pillars of value to help guide decisions and identify the right activities to undertake to maximize value creation.I recommend that you read this book if you want to improve your decision making as a manager or board member. You should also read this book if you want to better identify activities that should create value as an investor.

This book lives at the nexus between a corporate finance textbook and a popular management book. It condenses a lot of information that seems like the stuff you'd learn in the first year of business school, but yet is very instructional for anyone just learning organizational capitalism and all that it entails. I imagine this would be an excellent refresher for highly motivated executives as well, although I'm not sure there are many of those around.I took the advice of another reader who recommended pairing this with the McKinsey Valuation Workbook, but I had to do a lot of side research to fill in some technical gaps. I might have been better served with the more advanced and regularly updated Valuation, but I appreciated the brevity and condensing of valuable topics into a fairly short read.I would definitely recommend this book, if you have sufficient motivation to really READ it.

This is a wonderful book. Bateson is writing in the mid-1930's about his stay a few years earlier with the Iatmul, a tribe of recently subdued headhunters, on the Sepik River in the mandated territory of New Guinea. The people are fierce, yet ultimately they are people like everyone else. Bateson seems to have arrived at an easy working relationship with them, and he sets about defining the mechanics of their society, with an eye on the similarities and differences in Iatmul and European approaches to life. Bateson leaves it to us to combine this information with the premise that all of us are made of the same stuff, in hopes of learning things that would otherwise be denied us.The aspect of Iatmul culture which interests Bateson most is the eponymous "naven." Although descent is patrilineal in Iatmul society, there is also a strong matrilineal element. Every male, and to a lesser extent every female, has a "wau", a maternal uncle, who from the day of his birth goes to great lengths to build an ongoing relationship with him. This includes gifts of food, support during the painful initiation process, and in former times assistance with early homicides.The recipient of these favors is known as a "laua". Whenever the "laua" accomplishes something for the first time, his "wau" dresses up like a shabby old woman, parades, dances, and acts like a buffoon to commemorate the event. It is this display which is known as the "naven." Qualifying events include building a canoe, killing a crododile, killing an inhabitant of one of the other villages, or luring such an inhabitant to the Iatmul village under friendly pretenses, allowing others to kill him. Not only does the "wau" put on this display, but he is joined by other males who are not quite as closely related to the "laua", and women who are related in various ways dress up as men to commemorate the achievement. Bateson's primary question is why do these people do these things?To answer his question, Bateson has to tread lightly between the competing "functionalism" of Bronislaw Malinowski and the "structural" approach of Reginald Radcliffe-Brown. He seems to address both viewpoints satisfactorily, simultaneously showing us how the "naven" allows the members of a Iatmul village to get what they want out of life, and how the custom itself is the consequence of the structure of Iatmul society, and how it contributes to the structure of that society. Basically, both "wau" and "laua" get strong allies for life, something not to be taken lightly in the violent internal and external environment of a Iatmul village. They also get a relationship which can be a source of personal pride to both of them. Bateson thinks that given the contentiousness of the individual Iatmul men, it is surprising that they can live in villages of two hundred to one thousand inhabitants. He attributes their ability to do so to the "naven" customs, which in conjunction with patrilineal and initiatory affinities bind members of the society to multiple clans and moieties. Once the village attains a certain size, even the ties of the "naven" are not strong enough to hold it together. The village is split into factions, and one group leaves to found a new village.Bateson finds the individualism of the Iatmul people splendid. He points out that there is no law of the sort that Europeans are accustomed to. There are taboos and prohibitions, but it is always understood that if an individual is strong enough to defy these taboos and prohibitions, then he may do as he pleases. There is no chief. There are no tribal elders as such, although the older men have more sway than the younger ones. Needless to say, if the individual is not strong enough to defy the taboos and prohibitions and does so anyway, he suffers a much unhappier fate. When conflict arises, various individuals decide they have an interest in one side or the other, and they confront each other. This does not necessarily lead to violence, although one gets the impression that it did so more regularly in pre-European times. Rather, an offender's actions may result in the slit-gongs being sounded, summoning all the men of the village to the Ceremonial House for a debate concerning what is to be done. In the course of the debate the speakers will make their points by beating a ceremonial stool with branches of certain trees while declaiming their points of view. Sometimes they will threaten to expose the totemic secrets of the other side, and sometimes they will do so, openly mocking them. When this happens, a brawl often results. Women are excluded from these prceedings.Since the "naven' is basically an exercise in transvestitism, Bateson examines in depth the differences between Iatmul men and women. The men tend to be harsh, arrogant, and uncooperative. These traits are so exaggerated that Bateson is sometimes surprised that they can live together at all. The women, on the other hand, tend to be jolly and cooperative, especially when they are away from the men. The women do most of the day-to-day work, gathering food in the surrounding forest, raising pigs, catching prawns and fish in the river, and tending to the young. The men get together in groups to build houses and communal structures, and they often put on shows and festivities, one of whose purposes is to impress the women who constitute their audience. They have many secrets which are hidden from the women. The woman's role in sexual activities is regarded as shameful.The concept of death by natural causes is alien to the Iatmul. Violent death is quite common, and those who die by other means are considered the victims of sorcery. When an influenza epidemic kills a number of people in the villages, this is considered a series of murders by sorcery, one in retaliation for another. And there are village "sorcerers" who step forward to take credit for these deaths, sometimes explaining how the deceased or a relation of the deceased had offended in some way. These sorcerers use the fear engendered by their claims to extort food, wealth, and women from the other villagers. They tend to be hated as well as feared. They also tend to prosper.Anthopology monographs go out of print rather quickly. This one is still in print. I think the book's high quality, combined with its entertaining style, is responsible for this. Bateson went on to other pursuits, including attempts to communicate with dolphins in Hawaii. I acquired the book, willing to indulge in anthropological theory, but really seeking the forbidden pleasure of watching people go about their lives free of the constraints with which I had grown up. Although Bateson ultimately gave his backers the science they had paid for, I always counted him as a fellow traveler in this pursuit.
