"Norooz - A Celebration of Spring! The Persian New Year" is a wonderful book. It is a beautiful children's book, but as an adult, I learned so much about Norooz as well. Every page is filled with interesting details and information. There is even a section with pertinent Persian vocabulary and an accompanying pronunciation guide. The illustrations are bright and happy and made me smile as I read along. My 10 year old absolutely loved the book and has asked me to read it to him multiple times. Absolutely delightful book! I hope to see more from Hejazi and Cavallo - they truly have a gift.
A useful introductory book canvassing the customs and origins of the Persian New Year. As a native Persian I'm supposed to know all this stuff already, but it was revealed to me at a recent family gathering that my familiarity of was, shall we say, spotty -- I felt like I was going to die of shame. Like, who knew that the garlic on the haft-seen table symbolizes medicine? Now, I have a Persian nephew who could stand to learn about his heritage so I ostensibly brought the book for him, but secretly perused it myself first... two birds with one stone. Highly recommended.
We liked the book so much that after buying one for our daughter, we are getting a 2nd one to gift the school library. As a reference, we have purchased other Norouz children's book and find this one better.An engaging book, giving the reader a chance to read and experience all aspects of Persian New Year.Nice touches * allowing reader to visualize Norouz traditions and how it compares to other New year traditions.* allowing reader to see that Persian New Year has been celebrated for many years and is continuing to be celebrated not only in Iran but all around the world.What I would like to see in the next edition:* Mention of how the Haft seen table can be different from one family to another. I had never heard of Tangerine or Rosewater on Haft Seen table for example.* It would be nice to have an appendix to the book with some classroom activities.
Highly recommend it for all Persians living out of country and for those who we want to introduce Nowrooz to their little ones.
So much awesomeness about this book. It's educational, enlightening, and delightful. And it goes without saying, teaching kids about other cultures is vital to sustaining a peaceful society. Gail shows with care how Persians celebrate the New Year (Norooz), demonstrating the richness of Persian culture in a language and manner that kids can relate to. The illustrations are goofy and great, sure to get kids smiling and engaged. I'm excited to gift this to as many kids as possible, especially as Norooz approaches!
To read a tiny little book on something you know nothing about and feel like you have a pretty good understanding at the end is a pretty rewarding investment of time. Simply written and delightfully illustrated, Gail Hejazi's "Norooz" is more than just educational, it's inspirational, for young and old alike. It makes you want to welcome spring with all the anticipation and celebration the ancient Persians did!
It was an absolute joy to learn about the traditions of Norooz through this wonderful guide! The illustrations are radiant and the content is very educational. The author and illustrator did a great job in making this work accessible to both children and adults from all backgrounds and cultures :)
We are originally from Ukraine and New Year is the most widely celebrated and beloved holiday over there. It's still our favorite, so it's always interesting to find out how it's celebrated by different cultures and in other parts of the world. It was fun to look for similarities and differences in the traditions. The book is well written, educational, and easy to read. We loved bright colorful pictures which made the reading really fun.
