Anyone that makes you laugh OUT LOUD with just the written word takes great talent! Add a kick ass story that's amazingly well written from the first page AND has well rounded, believable characters that you can't help but love, makes for one of the best books of this genre I have read in a very long time. Laughing out loud isn't the only thing that'll be coming out of your mouth either, so don't read around the littles and if you have a swear jar wherever you are when you read it, be prepared to owe a small fortune to it by the end of this tale extraordinaire!!! Well done D.A. Simpson!!! When's the next one due because I'm ready right now!
I loved, loved, loved this book!!! I am a big Zompoc book fan so I've read LOTS of them, and this one had everything I want!! The characters were GREAT, and if there is ever a zombie apocalypse these are the people I want to be with. There's nothing better than a bunch of military guys using their skills to take down zombies and protect other survivors. The story was fascinating, the pace was great, and I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I was never disappointed. The only bad part of this book was the fact that it had to end. This author is fantastic and I highly recommend this book. I can't wait for his next book to come out!! Hurry, hurry, hurry...
Wow! What a story! I don’t know where this David Simpson has been hiding, I guess in a truck stop or something but he did such a bang up job on this book! I had to check twice to make sure I had read it correctly that this was his first book! Dang! His first book at it was freakin’ phenomenal! I had heard about it when it had won the book of the month in the book club I belong to. I read the blurb and thought I would give it a shot…not knowing what to expect because I didn’t know this author and was pleasantly surprised when I started to read it. I love discovering new zombie stories and new authors and this was like finding a diamond in the rough! The Hope Diamond of diamonds! It is that good! From start to finish, the action keeps on rolling(see what I did there?…rolling) and never stops. I loved the characters which were well described and so likeable and relatable. This is a must add to anyone’s read list that loves zombies or just loves a well written story that will keep you entertained for hours! All I can say is you won’t be disappointed!
Ok.. I like it. No... I don't know a lot about big rigs even tho a few friends have driven for 20 years.. I never understood why someone would not armor up a big rig like this in zombie novels.. not being a truck driver tho (do have a class b) I thought that maybe an armored car like brinks would be cool.. diesel lasts longer.. it is easy to come by.. and enough weight and you can push stuff aside.. being able to sleep in the thing is a plus too... Ok.. I like that part.. but the characters are great. I ride OLD Harleys but am not that hidebound that I don't see the value of crotch rockets... The women? well... yeah.. maybe.. kinda sorta. I have run into my share of competent ones.. this kinda sorta has more than it's share. and.. they all of course are young and gorgeous.. my chances of that all happening? I would say slim to none..The firearms.. Ok.. I admit to being a stickler... going to the range in an hour.. but the guns are right.. this is huge to me.Anyway.. there is nothing spectacular about any of that stuff but it all comes together to make for a VERY enjoyable read .. This is fast paced and fun.
For North America, the world ends at 6am, Eastern Standard Time. And when the zombie apocalypse goes down, may you be so lucky as to find yourself at the Three Flags Truck Stop, nestled in the outskirts of Reno, just off Route 395. Now, if you don't mind a bit of historical fun fact, Route 395 is a stretch of road that ran from San Diego to the Canadian border.Gunny's old Peterbilt semi had been up and down Route 395 ad nauseam, mostly coz Gunny always made it a point to make a pit stop at his favorite truck stop. Some more fun facts? Great. The family what's owned the Three Flags Truck Stop for decades had marketed it as the oldest truck stop in Nevada. It's a piece of nostalgia, of roadside Americana. It comes complete with a convenience store and tourist trap. Its proprietor, crusty old Cobb, is a veteran and he honors the military and his fallen compadres mightily. It's why heaps of truckers - a lot of whom are former servicemen - frequent the place, Gunny being only one of them. It's been a minute since I'd read a zombie thriller this knock-my-socks-off. Zombie Road: Convoy of Carnage should be adapted to cinema, except there's the controversy that's sure to surface surrounding the root of the zombie apocalypse. I won't say more other than certain folks are bound to get salty. Some plot spoilers. It's hard to believe it's David A. Simpson's debut novel. It's a remarkably polished read. It's tremendously satisfying to follow the steps taken by our ragtag band as they strive to rebuild a society after such a catalysmic collapse. At the center of it is Gunny, a trucker who was hauling lumber when the dead began to walk. But he's not the only interesting character. The author surrounds him with a grand cast of colorful personalities. Sarah the fearless biker who's also an EMT. Scratch with the trucker with the metal prosthetic arm. "Stabby McStabsalot" a.k.a. Jody, the British death metal musician. The very straight-laced Sheriff's Deputy "Boomquifa" Collins. Long Dawg, the hip hop guy with the silver teeth and gold chains and neck tattoos who strategically blasts his rap music real loud. There's even a country music band. Now that's a squad.Should the zombie apocalypse go down, your having watched The Walking Dead show may have screwed you. TWD would have you think it's super-easy to drive something pointy into a zombie skull. With one gristly scene, this book shows it ain't so:"The blade slid off the hard bone and down the side of the creature's face, leaving a deep furrow and ripping its ear off as a large piece of scalp flapped over, revealing the yellowish bone of the skull.'Oh, that's sick,' someone said as the snarling, flailing thing snapped at Gunny's wrist. He hurriedly slammed the knife down a second time, and again it careened off of the skull, not driving in like it was supposed to, but grooving down the other side of its head."Just as I was settling down to thinking this book is gonna be all about how folks hold off the zombie apocalypse while at a truck stop, I happened to glance at the book title again. The plot goes on to reveal why it's a bad idea to linger at Three Flags. And what's a post-apocalyptic survival story without someone wanting to get back home to their loved ones? Cue the 2400-mile road trip and the start of a riproaring series. Purists may get salty because these zombies aren't the Romero shamblers but, rather, more like the speed freak rage monsters from 28 Days Later or World War Z. I saw screw tradition - zombies with good cardio always more scary than shamblers. This author knows how to tell a story. Not just with the worldbuilding stuff and the escalation of tension and stakes and the occasional twists he tosses in. He's also brilliant at establishing a tight sense of camaraderie among the survivors. Old Cobb and Gunny are the sorts of hardcases I want to ride with when TEOTWAWKI hits. But I love that there's a micro-community at Three Flags, different folks who are experts at this and that and disparate strangers coming together. I just love how the author puts everything together. It's also a well-edited book, perhaps courtesy of the author's "nit-picky OCD, grammar-Nazi partner in life." So, pretty much a perfect zombie read.
Well now, I have a new author to follow! Having read a couple of hundred (no lie!) Zombie novels it takes a well written story to get me "caught up" in the tale. Simpson's fledgling novel is as good as it gets. If he keeps this quality up he will become one of the genre's greats. The only disappointment was at the novel's end....I found there wasn't a sequel available yet. I implore you Mr. Simpson, get to work!!!
