Book number two of a two book post apocalyptic series. I read the POD (print on demand) trade paperback version which has excellent paper and fonts. Also note that this is an self-published series. I highly suspect that the series will continue and I look forward to reading book number three.The first book was unusual in the fact that it was written in the second person. The author apparently received so many complaints that he rewrote the first book in the first person. I have not read that version nor do I plan to do so at this time. The second book is written in first person with the person identified at the top of each chapter.This book is written in parallel with the first book. The first book was about two people getting home after the EMP. This book is written about the home situation deteriorating rapidly after the EMP.The author, an degreed Electrical Engineer and a licensed Professional Engineer, takes the point that an EMP over the USA will be so destructive that all computers in phones, control systems, and cars will be destroyed. He even thinks that LED light bulbs will have their inner circuit boards destroyed. I think that this thinking is a little extreme as car computers live in a horribly noisy and hazardous environment. Should the USA get EMP'd, I think that car computers will get locked up but a simple reboot (restarting) will clear the fault. But, I could be totally wrong !BTW, there are frequent mentions of Christianity in the book via prayers and such. At least once per chapter and sometimes several times per chapter. I have an acquaintance who is an atheist who was offended by the amount of prayers in the book. I am a Christian so I appreciate the amount but others might not.The author also has an military coup in the USA and nobody notices due to the severity of having all of our little electrical helpers gone. That is quite the idea. A very sobering idea.
Book was good, story is great. In the beginning however there were far too many he said I said they said statements. Pic a conversation between two there is no need to constantly use the said phrases. I do appreciate that the prime characters are Christians. Most don't realize many peppers are believers.Can't wait for book three!

Circumstances force them to depend upon what they have in hand for their survival.In book 2, The Search, the focus is on Lizzie Barnes and Will Carter. Jill Barnes and John Carter have survived the weeks long ordeal of a two-hundred fifty mile journey following the EMP event. Arriving home, they find Lizzie and Will are missing. The Search is the story of Lizzie’s sojourn to Amy Wright’s house and Will’s efforts to find her and bring her home to Repose to be with his family. Along the way, Lizzie encounters threats of sexual assault and jealously as well as a helping hand or two. She learns to take help where she can find it, and to help others where she can.Will encounters threats of theft, as well as the need to help ensure other’s survival before he can locate Lizzie. Sadly, The Search has many characters who are victims whether they are aware of it or not; Jimmy Wright is one of them.The Search will leave most readers disturbed and perhaps a bit shaken; perhaps not as much as The Journey Home, but none will walk away untouched.
This is a very good story. Picking up from when John and Jill gets home, the story flashes back to his son, Will, and Will's story. If John had a tough time making it home, Will certainly didn't have it any easier. Realistic, straight forward, and probably pretty darn accurate as to what things would look like given the situation. There are good people like John, and his son. But then there are plenty of the opposite, bad people who go completely off the reservation; and good people that lose it all and turn to their true nature and become some of the worse. Plenty of action, excellent characters. Jeff Motes' writing has become smoother and more self-assured. Excellent work. This book does continue into the next book, so keep that in mind.
Once Upon an Apocalypse: Book 2 - The Search - I didn't think it would get better than Book 1 - but it's running a close race. Love all of the prepping and survival tips sprinkled throughout the book without being overpowering. Definitely things that we "ordinary folks" can do without investing a bazillion dollars into prepping. I like that Mr. Motes uses situational awareness in many instances to help us remember just how quickly things can change. He is an awesome author who manages to deliver a series of books without foul language and graphic sexual content. High five to Mr. Motes! Great read in this genre.
