Okay, so, as an Elementary art teacher, I've seen quite a few children's books cross my desk, and many of them have been cute or beautifully illustrated while getting a great message across to kids.Maybe I was just expecting more from Pearl, and am more critical of it because of it, but I can't quite figure what age range would best benefit from this book.For Kindergarteners, the message seems a bit vague to me, and while the pictures are pretty, it just doesn't seem to me that much effort went into creating them, from an artist's perspective. For my older kids, there just aren't enough words to make this story engaging enough for them, even though they'd be better able to grasp the subtleties of the message.Like I said, this book is just "meh" to me. I feel as if more effort should've gone into it across the board before publication.
The illustrations in this book were all done with Prismacolor pencils on Bristol paper, which gives them a beautiful organic feel. They're pretty simple, with most pages having only one or two elements to focus on, with the sea in the background. The whole book is about 360-370 words by my count, so it's an easy read aimed at early readers.There are some parts of the story that I think an be a bit confusing. For example, the introduction to Pearl: "In the vast sea of blue, some mermaids watched over the waves breaking upon the endless beaches. Some kept an eye on the great coral reefs. Some tended to the towering forests of kelp rising from the ocean floor. Some guarded the giants of the deep. And Pearl deeply yearned to be one of them." Wait, what? She wanted to be a giant of the deep? Or she wanted to be one of the mermaids who guarded them? Or she wanted to be any one of the types of mermaid? I realize it's supposed to be the latter; it may seem nit-picky but I think that could have been re-worded to avoid ambiguity, especially as this is aimed at very young readers.The pearl that Pearl ends up watching over rises up and turns, for some reason, into [spoiler alert!] the moon. That isn't explicitly explained in the text but it's indicated in the illustrations. I didn't really care for this ending. Early readers tend to be literal minded, so my son's first question was "why did the pearl turn into the moon?". I feel like the book would have been more interesting if the pearl were just a real pearl and didn't magically turn into the moon. What's going to happen when Pearl creates another pearl? Will there be two moons?I'm probably being too critical. My son enjoys looking at the pictures and reading the words. It's a pretty book with a nice message. Obviously, the message is that caring for small things is important work and can bring light and joy into the world, but you may have to explain that to your young reader because the message may not be obvious to them.
This is why my four year olds dream of mermaids. The imagery in this book is absolutely beautiful. The artwork is masterfully done in a soft dream like ocean. The words and phrasing are actually comforting as I read aloud to my children. The pages are thick and velvety smooth which works perfectly with the pictures. Not only did my children love this book, but so did I.Pearl is a sweet little mermaid surrounded by grown-up mermaids with very big and fantastical jobs. She longs to be a caretaker of the deep just like they are. She asks her mother if she can help take care of the ocean as well and her mother agrees and tasks her with a job. With Pearl's elation she becomes lighter and lighter until she breaches the service and sits on the beach with her mother. Her mother gives her a single grain of sand and dashes Pearl's hopes of an important job. As her excitement deflates it drags her down to the bottom of the ocean again. She is determined not to let her mother down and takes great care of her little grain of sand. In the end, we all are inspired and learn a lesson that young readers can relate to and carry with them.I have read this book to my little ones so many times I can almost recite the words to each page. The more we look at these fantastic illustrations we notice subtle nuances in each picture. If you look hard, you'll find little mermaids in places that you didn't notice were there the last time you read it. That in itself makes it a little more special. This book has a special place on my children's bookshelf reserved for their very favorites.
