About the Author
Michael Sitrick is an internationally renowned crisis manager. Fortune magazine called him “one of the most accomplished practitioners of the dark arts of public relations” and compared him to Winston Wolf, the fictional fixer played by Harvey Keitel in Pulp Fiction. Sitrick’s firm (Sitrick & Co.) has guided several high-profile celebrities through national scandals, including NFL quarterback Michael Vick, heiress Paris Hilton, and the estate of Michael Jackson. Sitrick is the author of the 1998 book Spin: How to Turn the Power of the Press to Your Advantage. He lives in Los Angeles.

This book is such an important read. It really elevated my understanding of the media and PR- and showed the best practices from the inside out. This is a valuable book for individuals and companies. Sitrick is really a genius. You get the sense that because of his vast expertise and years of excellence in the field that he can shoot from the hip in any situation, no matter how dramatic or how high the stakes. As the reader I expected that someone in crisis PR must be brutal. Quite the contrary. Right away you learn that Sitrick leads with the truth, and bases his entire business on honesty. That he defends the reputations of his clients with the truth. That using what he calls a "lead steer" to get in front of a bad story is often the best solution to save your reputation. I can't think of anything more important in today's era of fake news than his thoughtful consideration of how to triumph in the face of the toughest obstacles when your back is really to the wall, and your adversaries are playing with loaded weapons. His stories are magnificent. (He's also funny. He could play that up more.) Sitrick is the guy who saved Twinkie! (Twice). I think he buried the lead with that story. You can find it at the end of the book, right before the chapter about how he advised the Oscar-winning filmmakers on the doping documentary, ICARUS. It's a star-studded cast in this read, and a real behind the scenes of who you want on your side when push comes to shove in the media. Also it was a fun book to carry around. Everyone asked me what I was reading and what it was about. So it led to some interesting conversations in the world, which I always like when I'm carrying around a hardback. More, please!
If you’re buying this book in an attempt to find unceasing flattering characterizations of Michael Sitrick (unlikely), or want to hear about his life “John Grisham†style (also unlikely, but perhaps more reasonable), you’ve found the right book.The focus of this book is clearly getting across (however many times it can) what a miracle man Sitrick is, and how devilishly clever and busy and talented he is, et cetera. It’s a book about the man.It is NOT an adequate book if you’re hoping to learn some serious applicable knowledge regarding crisis management. What the book does NOT do is teach you useful, applicable crisis management. There are little to no useful “secrets,†and all of the information given is woefully, pathetically general.What I’d say to the author:If you don’t want to give away your secrets, then don’t write a book! But if you do write a book, especially one claiming that you will divulge useful information, then don’t put out one as general and useless as this. The main focus of the book should be the meat, the real useful knowledge. In this book the meat was practically nonexistent. Again, if you don’t want to put out useful information or give out your secrets, it’s very simple...just don’t write a book!
Very readable account of how to take charge of sticky situations. Just enough "I changed the names" gossip to tantalize, lots of discussion of how to manage/manipulate information. When I watch the news now, I watch for these processes at work. Sadly, I see a lot of them. I hope I never need to use this information, but I'll keep this book handy if I do.
Clear direction on handling unpleasant situations
Michael Sitrick the master of PR outdoes himself in this great book about the business of business. A must read for anyone interested in the world of business and public relations. Loved it!
