Riverside International Raceway documents the history of a track now gone (it is now a subdivision) in beautiful pictures and words.Right from the back dust jacket of the book we are told that even diehard Riverside raceway fans “will admit the environment was usually too hot, sometimes too cold, extremely dry or depressingly wet, often windy and never ever a garden spot” however they still came in droves.The book details the three decades or so of Riverside Raceway’s life and subsequent death. The desert, the races, the speed. It’s laid out in chapters that detail specifics of the track and the series that ran it including: FIA Formula 1, SCCA Pro Racing, NASCAR, TransAm, Can-AM, USAC, CART Indy Cars, IROC, Off Road (and the list goes on). A sampling of names in the book: Fred Lorenzen, Rick Mears, Geoff Bodine, Emerson Fittipaldi, Terry Labonte, Bobby Rahal, Tom Sneva, AJ Foyt, and native son Dan Gurney (who also wrote the book’s foreword) to name a few grabbed while flipping through the book to remind myself of its contents for review purposes. My favorite part of the book—beyond the photography—is just a little sidebar on page 43 detailing the track’s history in film—being so close yet so far away from Hollywood. The book is chucked full of interesting sidebars—including one on how the track was used for teaching driving (page 74), the Olympic Relay (Page 83). There are so many photos that it’s impossible to pick just one … but perhaps the most poignant picture is the one on page 191—a photo of a piece of the speedway and a Riverside Raceway patch. Gone but obviously not forgotten by this book.They physical book itself is a heavy duty book, with a gorgeous dust jacket. The book is 204 pages inclusive of the indexes.Written by Pete Lyons, Riverside International Raceway clearly demonstrates Lyon’s obvious love of motorsports and the time period of Riverside. Pete Lyon’s father, Ozzie Lyons, was the U.S. correspondent to Britain’s Autosport magazine, and often took Pete with him during vacations. It’s that kind of of exposure—from childhood through adulthood—that allows someone like Pete Lyons to cultivate such a gorgeous book.This book will satisfy the history buffs, the auto racing buffs and the photography buffs. About the Author

To author Pete Lyons, childhood vacations meant traveling around the United States in the Rolls Royce owned by his father, Ozzie Lyons, an avid photographer, engineer, writer, editor, travel enthusiast, car restorer, and racing fan. Pete picked up his father’s auto and photojournalistic enthusiasm from a very young age, and gradually covering motorsports became his career.Pete spent six seasons reporting for Autosport, where he attended events such as the Daytona 24-hour and 500-mile races, the Indy 500, and the Formula One Grand Prix in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He found particular inspiration from the Can-Am Challenge Cup, which inspired three of his ten books.Later he moved to international races and contributed to a wide variety of automotive publications, including Vintage Racecar, AutoWeek, Racer, Road & Track, Corvette Quarterly, Car and Driver, Vintage Motorsport, Cycle, Cycle World, Private Pilot, and many others. What a wonderful compilation of racing history. It is especially great for me as I was able to experience the track from its early days and have wonderful memories. Gurney's Preface is very well done and right on. As he notes, we can look in the past with 20-20 hindsight and think of the possibilities to have the track fit into the new developed area to save it for future race fans... woulda, shoulda, coulda... But didn't,.. and it's gone. The drivers from all over the world came to Riverside recognizing what a wonderful and special track it was. All venues of racing loved it, The versitile configurations, all great layouts, made the trade even more desirable. And to think,even more track (7+ ,miles) were graded for future paving... but it never made it.If you love racing history, you will like this book. Very well done with mix of great photos and descriptions of each. Great coffee table book.

I never made it to Riverside while it was operating, and I regret that, but Pete Lyons' great photo book on the track makes up for that, at least in part. And Pete didn't miss anything; there are even chapters on club racing, motorcycles, drag racing and vintage racing. Dan Gurney writing the Foreword (and one more eloquent and heartfelt than in most books) was a natural choice. While each chapter lists the overall winners of all the races pertinent to the chapter, one might have wished for more complete results tables, but I guess that information can be found elsewhere if one has the time and energy to search.I actually did visit the shopping mall that was built on part of RIR's property, and it all seemed sacrilegious and unnecessary. I'm amazed that SoCal has not built a significant road course to replace this one; maybe they realized that it would be a tough act to follow! Thank you, Pete Lyons for the memories.

As I would have expected from Pete Lyons, the pictures are wonderful, in composition and subject, just as I had hoped. A tribute to a great track from a great photographer.I couldn't help but think as I enjoyed every page, that the production or perhaps printing had not done the photos justice. As great as each image is, each one seems a little flat compared to other books featuring photographs and other Peter Lyons published pictures.I hate to be critical of a book I enjoy, but I suspect even the critical eye of the photographer and author might agree.Wade

I didn't give this book five stars because it's a great book so much as because it's a NECESSARY book.Riverside Raceway was a huge part of Southern California's role in 1960's automotive culture, and as such its story deserved to be told. It is fitting that Pete Lyons published this book, because not many others would have been nearly as qualified or capable as he is to write it. I have met Pete on one occasion (at the Riverside Museum) and among all of his wealth of motorsports knowledge this is a story that needed to be told and he is the guy who probably knew more about the subject than anyone.It's not any kind of magnum opus, but it tells the entire story of the place thoroughly without going into too much boring minutiae, the photos are well chosen, and to someone like myself who didn't get to see any real racing there (with the dubious exception of a track day mere months before they closed it for good) it kind of provides a sense of closure.If you're not really into motorsports but you're interested in Southern California history, this is an essential book. If you are into motorsports in any way, this is an essential book. And while you're at it, get all of Pete's other books too, and throw in a calendar for your wall...

Like others have said in reviews, this may be the best motorsports book ever. Very well researched and written, outstanding photographs (most I've never seen published before), this is a must have for anybody who made (or wished they had) the trip out to the legendary road course. You really can't miss with a Pete Lyons book, but this one tops them all. Lyons didn't miss a story or personality in this book. Brought back a lot of memories, and easy to see why so many retired drivers (like Dan Gurney, Parnelli Jones, etc.,) love the book also. Hope the author will do books about the history of the Long Beach Grand Prix, Ontario Motor Speedway, and the making of the movie "Grand Prix" sometime.

Even if you have only a casual interest in historic Riverside International Raceway, RIP, you need this book by a master of racing photography. It might even turn you into a devotee. Its many color and monochrome images, and its text, convey the atmosphere and some specifics of the West's popular racing facility as it appeared to one of the most perceptive of all observers. Your interior landscape will be much enhanced by the experience.

I raced at R.I.R. for more than a decade in addition to my wife working as a race recorder. When the closure became evident with the equipment having been posted to do their damage but races kept being scheduled so we as a family kept doing what we enjoyed. When the final race was complete we & the all of the Cal Club members that were workers present for that sad day celebrated all of great history & all of the activities that will go into the history of GREAT RACEWAY. This book is a tribute to one of the now lost but never forgotten ROAD RACEWAYS in the history of road racing history.

Terrific historic and photographic work for those fans of Sports car racing who grew up in the 1960's and always wanted to be at Riverside to experience SoCal's most famous racing venue. Incredible photography and enlightening text brings the great( and small) events run at Riverside right into your lap. If you are a serious fan who grew up in the "Golden Age" of Big Time US Sports car racing this book is absolutely a must have !

Very helpful. Not judgmental or mean spirited, the author gives his testimony of living and participating in the the shepherding movement. The need for accountability among certain leaders and the subsequent ideas were good and made sense. But what may have begun in the Spirit, became fueled by the flesh. I read this book because my experience in the movement was similar to the author's; I have learned hard lessons since leaving it. Though the "leaders" were merely men, I allowed myself to believe what they taught without question; they interpreted the Word of God with an agenda. My blind loyalty to men transcended my loyalty to God. His word became secondary in my faith. In my heart, I followed men and not God. My loyalty rested in the pleasing of men and not in following the Holy Spirit. I was deceived, but God in His mercy, showed me my sin of idolatry.The author is adamant that God's truth prevails. We are to study God's word in context, with the Holy Spirit speaking to our hearts. We nurture our personal relationship with God; we grow as the Holy Spirit makes Jesus real to us. His Word comes alive as we press into Him.The topic of forgiveness is included as imperative to moving forward - those who may have harmed our faith, or even our lives, as well as forgiving ourselves. There is no other way to leave the past behind and press on to the life we have been called to live for His glory.I'd recommend this book to anyone who was in the shepherding (or discipleship) movement to root out any self condemnation, "justified" resentment, or confusion in their relationship with God.

As a wounded soul, I needed two things: 1 - A listening ear. 2 - An emotional hugWhat I got were the same two things you will find in this book: 1 - "Here's what is wrong with you." 2 - "Here's what you need to do."

If you are struggling with the past and letting go, I highly recommend this book. It was very instrumental in helping me get over some issues in my past and some poor ideas I had about people that improved my life for the better.

Is there anyone not damaged somewhat by past events, or perceived wrongs in our lives? David Seamands has great insights in low self esteem anxiety, insecurity, Worthlessness, anger, resentment, hate and more. He uses the Bible to help us with all these feelings, without being preachy. Healing is a process, he says. For some of us it's a life long process. Read this with an open mind and heart. I highly recommend this to everyone, even those who aren't hurting in any way. (Is that possible? I sure hope so). Thank you so much for this free to me book. I'll keep it on my Kindle and read it again.

I found the book to be a quick read with some interesting biblical references. An area that I had some problem with was with the topic of children and the original sin. I recognize the fact that Adam and Eve did commit the original sin; however, saying we are predisposed to sin in childhood is a stretch for me. I have two young children (4 and 2) and I am beginning to see my 4 year old starting to want to not tell the whole story. It is my belief if you haven't studied the bible and haven't become a Disciple of Christ prior to being baptized, how can we say (judge) that children are predisposed to evil. I think of Jesus saying not to hinder the children and let them come to him. I often think children are in a protected category for a time. Another area that I found interesting is the term 'witnessing'. I am not sure why we, as Christians, use this term, when in fact it is really 'sharing our faith'. Just sounds weird. On the content of the book itself, I found it to be very interesting and the usage of scripture appropriate. I think that there are books out there that deal with more specifics, I believe that the intent is more of an overview and to start you on the path of healing.Once you get beyond the minor issues, I would recommend the book.

I wish I had discovered this author sooner. Everything that he discussed inthis book, I have been though as a teen. As a teen, I did not take situationsin life well (which I have come to realize after years). I feel like Pastor Seamandsis talking to me and I love the bible passages even though I have read the Biblemore than once. Thank you. I found the chapter on healing from depression particularly helpful, and his explanation of Romans 8:23-30, is pure gold.

Without going into complicate psychological stuff the author has such great experience and can in a few words describe accurately the feelings and reasons and consequences that takes several books for others to explain. And steps to healing.This book is definitely not only for those who feel they are hurting or those who think of themselves as emotionally damaged. I'm a pretty normal guy with no greater traumas in life, and still this book spoke volumes to me and helped me to understand many things about myself and my feelings. It revealed things in my personality that I have not understood where they came from and also showed me ways to work on these things.This book really surprised me by how much it meant to me personally and how much of it I can use in counseling and when helping friends.

It is written with great detail.2) A load of information (i.e. the index is impressive - to say the least).3) Price, I've spent $200 on organic chemistry textbooks. This well priced for the information provided. Trust me.CONS:1) It's strength I numbered as number one for me is also it's greatest weakness. The textbook doesn't hold back providing diagrams / pictures of early old software of the start of this field. Giving a real depth. However, old software and early graphs were, how should we say? Bland. There is no way really around this but I could see it being a tough read for a younger student (i.e. undergrads). If you can push through this you will greatly learn from this textbook.An easy recommend.

For example, the author has good material on microarray, a must for the time of the publishing of the book (2008/2009). In spite of a still usable technology, it is loosing terrain to the next generation sequencing (NGS) technology, that come up in 2007 and is now showing good results; NGS is really a turning point on the genomic and proteomic subject.So, don’t wait anymore, just buy it!Cheers.

Not very clear and not a good book to learn from.

Great reference for anyone interested in bioinformatics and genomics. Everything is given clear context and offers useful tools and methods that are (hopefully) going to remain consistent for a good number of years.

This is the third Bioinformatics text that I have read in the past three years. And, this particular text is light year *ahead* of the others. It is dense, but it gives the background and big-picture that many of the others are lacking.The text does not always flow - as if different sentences from different sources were thrown together without transition. As the text does cite many papers, this is acceptable. However, a review and small edits to help with the flow would make the book better.Regardless, it's the best text on this subject that I am currently aware of.

I found this book difficult to read, the chapters are over 30 pages and not well organized. At times it goes into great depth on certain topics while lacking details necessary on others. It is way too wordy and dull to make it through reading. I ended up only using lecture slides for the class because I just couldn't read this book

Great bioinformatic book that covers most, but not all, information.

For anyone interested in learning more about bioinformatics this is a great introductory text.
