For history buffs who know next to nothing about East Prussia this is one of the best and most comprehensive studies available in recent years. Very well written and sourced I finally began to get a complete picture of what life was really like in this region. The author who is not really a historian elaborated in detail of what this forgotten part of German was like prior to being annexed by the Soviet Union after the war. This book is also available on Kindle and well worth the read For those particularly interested in Konigsberg this book is a primer on the city and a good starting point for any student.

This was an interesting read before bedtime each night. Most of the stories related were excellent, but I soon tired of Agnes Miegel and her depressing life. The author apparently is enamored of the lady. I have never heard of her before reading this book, and do not care to hear anymore of her.The descriptions of the locales are excellent and the author paints a good 'word picture'.The maps and photos are good as is the index.I recommend the book to anyone interested in Eastern Europe.

Excellently woven historical account of (mostly) the upper class and culture of East Prussia. Then chronicles the destruction of this land and its peoples as a result of World War II. Also gives hope for a future for this region.Some sentence structure was difficult to read and had to be read twice to be understood.

This s a truly amazing book and will be fascinating to anyone interested in GermN and Eurooean 20th century history, , communist Easter Europe , the Soviet Union and now Russian relations. It is poetic, evocative, and insightful. East Prissia is indeed an forgotten and lost land and thus brings it and its people back to life. A great read and invaluable book.

A magnificent history of a part of Europe rarely discussed today. Thank goodness the author started his research in the early 1990's when at least the grandchildren of the great East Prussian estate families were alive. Though my wife and I have driven across Europe from Trondheim to Gibraltar, never did we think of East Prussia, so I was very glad to "see" it through this book.

Author provides a lot of valuable and unbiased insights into East Prussia's history. Great research effort! I'm now looking to find a simialr book that covers the rest of the former Prussia Provinces to include West Prussia. This book really held my attention and it was well written. 5 stars.

Detailed inside account of the fall of Prussia at the end of WW2 and the migration/escape of hundreds of thousands of Germans fleeing the Red Army by train,ship, and cart. For specialists a trove of details and names; for laymen a bit tedious but compelling in its documentation of loss and ruin among Prussians in what would soon become Poland - and the Soviet Union.

The book was in great condition. It came to me as advertised even with the development PCB in the back of the cover, which I didn't expect to receive!

Everything was fine.

In great condition, notes inside helped.

If having technical diagrams over the page to the corresponding text annoys you, then be prepared to be annoyed! The book doesn't get going really until chapter 3, however I found that having the technical figures (in most cases) not on the page or adjoining page, but having to flick back and forth a distraction to my concentration. The diagrams while helpful are a little confusing with the way in which they are layed out.In some places after describing a method in addressing registers, the example uses an alternative - fine, if in the context of, there is more than one way to achieve this, but this is patently not the context here.The book seems to be really designed to be part of a classroom tutorial and discussion.Be ready to put in some extra concentration if your buying this book without resource to other literature.On the whole the book is technically useful, the hardcover pleasant, but the placing of the diagrams really let the book down.

An excellent book for beginners starting with embedded micro controller design.

Writing a book as complete and well-thought-out as this one takes a Herculean effort, which is why most technical books are lacking in detail. Somehow, John Peatman has pulled it off, producing a book that is complete and detailed in every way. He completely describes the new, juicy, full-featured PIC18F452 and does it well. Two years ago, I wrote a disparaging review of Peatman's "Design With Pic Microcontrollers," feeling it was sketchy and lacking examples. Now, in "Embedded Design," he has produced a clear, well-written and complete package. Each chapter has a nice set of problems at the end, for those who will use it as a text. Appendices describe an inexpensive demo board and free debugging software. He shows you what to buy to set up a development lab and how to use it. .... If you want to buy one book that contains everything you need to learn about PIC chips, buy this one!

Although some material in the book can be read from spec sheets found on the net, the book really helps to sort through a lot of the clutter in spec sheets. A major benefit of this book is that it provides plenty of detailed illustrations to help you understand the facilities of the PIC instead of simply giving you page after page of techical specs. It also provides plenty of "template" code to help you get up and running if you're kind of new to microcontroller assembly.If you do the sample projects throughout the book, they really help you better understand most of the facilities of the PIC.One thing to note is that the book is written for a semester long college course though I think it's doable for self-study if you have at least some background with PICs. It even provides a PCB on the back cover whereby you can build your own board (I think you can order a package from digikey that has all the parts you need to build one) to run your code on.

I have used this book extensively for several designs. The book contains practical examples that can be adapted to many types of designs.The code examples are well written with text that explains the code and strategy behind it. The author has taken the time to fully explain the manyaspects of microcontroller design, pitfalls to avoid and methods to get around the limitations of an 8-bit micro. The book is down to earth but challenges you at the same time. I found the hardware data in the book to also be of great value. I highly recommend the book to any student or engineer serious about learning PIC microcontrollers. Kudos to John Peatman.

Not much out there for travel to Turkmenistan. But this seems pretty good....if you have permission to travel to the locations listed in this book. Some information is already out dated though, but general stuff is great.

Although the book was published in 2005, I used it in 2015 and absolutely loved it! Paul Brummell has probably traveled in Turkmenistan more extensively than any foreigner. His writing was thorough, interesting, and clear as he described this fascinating country. I also carried Lonely Planet Central Asia which was more recently published, but very scanty in its info compared to the Bradt guide. I had an amazing time in Turkmenistan and I thank Paul Brummell's book for being a major factor.

This guide is getting old. The country was still ruled by a president for life calling himself "Turkmenbasha" - leader of the Turkmen people and hanging posters of himself all over the capital. Now with a new president the country may be a bit less colorful, but is still quite wild and not much has changed (the vote of 2006 was not considered fair by international observers). Still the chapters on politics are out of date. But the great style of righting more then makes up for this and the book is a great insight into a country which at the time of righting was truly unique and now is just a little less unique...

Mr. Brummell's travelguide to Turkmenistan provides not only accurate practical information, but also interesting and extensive background information. His observations and comments are witty and very funny. The guidebook is an indispensable companion for travellers to this fascinating country, but definitely also makes interesting reading for arm-chair travellers.

True, this book may be a bit out of date, but if you want information on the sites worth visiting and their histories, it's still the best by far. I'd buy this one for sure, and then get another one for hotel prices and restaurant suggestions.

Those readers looking for a textbook approach to digital storytelling will find this book disappointing and possibly frustrating, as will those looking for a linear path in the text. Alexander's literary style is, unsurprisingly, very much like his oratorical delivery -- rambling, discursive, and punctuated with cultural and literary references. His style is also, for the audience that either shares or could share his romantic perspective on story, infectious. He obviously loves his topic and in the course of the volume tells the story of digital storytelling and his own story of falling in love with it. As such, this is not an abstract, objective, or coldly rational portrayal of the academic subject but a reference-rich and personal retelling.

I could have not selected a better book. Sometime back in the 60"s @ about 14-16 years old I tried and succeeded in obtaining my Novice License I was a geek then. Because I did not have the funds to continue (a radio) I let it die. From 1975 t0 1982 I worked in the electronics industry designing circuit boards. Although Electronics theory was not necessary to do this drafting function it was convenient to be surrounded by brilliant Electronic Engineers and Technicians. I left this position in 1982 and pursuid a career in Business Management. Then in 1993 I told my wife I was going to attempt to try to get my Technicians ticket on a whym. ( I long since lost any credentials of my earlier endeavor. Low and behold I passed, but again put it on the shelf not to use my new ticket to talk on VHF. This time I i renewed my ticket as required so I am still current.About three weeks ago a neighbor also a Ham walked by and said you should upgrade, you do not need the code and you can talk to the world.. This got me thinking so I got on Amazon.Com ans searched for books.I found Buck's Book and ordered it.One week from the day I received it I took and passed my General exam test (they told me I missed 4 answers)I can tell you get the book, read it cover to cover two times (lite reading) take a online test once then go for it.It worked for me I am now General cant wait wait till his Extra Book comes out

Not enough time and radio is not a priority.I saw your post on Facebook and decided to give it a try. I am involved in education and I know the worst way to learn is to sit and "memorize". I decided to order your General book along with the Technician for my son. I read the General book over a period of 3 days. I love the way it is laid out...the answers in BOLD and no " fluff". Walked confidently into the the test session this morning. Literally 20 minutes later i received confirmation that I passed. I only missed 3 questions, and I am sure of which 3 i missed.... The darn digital questions...My son is reading your tech book and will sit for the test next month.Thank you for a quality, well thought out product.Revolutionary in the staid, boring HAM radio study world...

I have a really tough time learning for standardized tests. This book was the best aid I have used. I took paid online courses but things just didn't click. Seeing the wrong answer over and over makes no sense. The way this book is written really works well for me. The exam questions and answers are clearly written in book form and your learning as you go along. I found it a very enjoyable read that flowed well. It's not filled with tons of useless data but just enough to enjoy "the story" After you read the book form of the answers you then reinforce your knowledge with the correct answers only section. The end is the exam questions with the correct answers again! I'm a cheapskate lol but this was money well spent. Passed easily! Thx you very much.

Love this book. I read through the ARRL book but was not doing well on the practice exams. Seeing so many wrong answers with the right answers can be very confusing. I studied this book for a week and began reliably passing the practice tests. Finally took the real deal test and passed my General exam. The author has the right idea. By only showing you the right answer it is much easier to retain the info and not get confused. Highly recommend this series. Studying for my Extra now, and already bought the book from this series for my Extra.

Like you, I'm no dummy, but I am real life gets in the way, taking time from precious studying. It took me a while to get to this book but once I ordered it, I LOVED it and have since ordered the next in series for general. With great pleasure, I found myself going down rabbit holes with other material, but as time got tighter I realized that I still didn't know what I needed to know to pass the test. This was the ABSOLUTE best use of my time. I spent weeks driving up and down the coast listening to other material, took the train many times studying on-line quizzes. This was simple, the best, really fun too. How much of it was made easy by my aimless work before, I can't say, but I honestly believe that I should have just gone straight to this book and not wasted time on other plans. I found the online quiz super helpful to monitor my knowledge retention so I would recommend keeping that too. I just have to say that positive reinforcement- esp ONLY getting the right answers, was best for me, and at this price, might be best for you too.

Teaches you what you need to know for the test, without a lot of extra information to confuse your brain. I took the tech and general back to back, and the correct answers just popped out to me. I used this book plus hamstudy.org. I also took a shot at the Extra (because, why not, it's already paid for), and failed as expected.

On an iPad, the text is messed up, whether you use the Kindle Reader, Safari, Edge, Chrome, or Firefox. It's pretty much unreadable.

Almost as fun as the first book. This one probably suffers a bit from knowing what to expect. It’s definitely worth it if you enjoyed the first though.

Pretty good follow up to the original book. If you enjoy Ashens, and you should, you'll enjoy this.I also appreciate that the thanks at the end take up much less space.

As a long time follower of Ashens's Youtube channel, I enjoyed the opportunity to purchase some physical tat from him and learn about some games that probably should have had some elbow grease put into them.

An excellent sequel.

Kindle edition suffers from sentences being printed over each other. Normal iPad and 12.9 no matter orientation. I want to read this so badly as the last book was brill. Please fix so I can update my rating, thanks.

I was late to getting my hands on Dr. Ashen’s first “Terrible Old Games You’ve Probably Never Heard Of” and I loved it after reading it, so I decided to get the jump on the sequel by pledging for it directly on Unbound.This book is definitely bigger than the first. It includes a lot more stuff, with more ‘Most Disappointing Game You Ever Bought’ segments, little reports on the lowest scoring games from various magazines, and even an interesting expose on the “Hareraiser” game controversy. It’s very entertaining, so much so that I’ve actually read it twice in a row! I can tell I’m going to get loads of joy reading this multiple times in the future.I got a complimentary pdf version for pledging early, and I read that first, but the physical book is nice, too. I got the special one with a holographic cover, and it’s nifty! The cover is sturdy and the pages are nice and thick, so I’m totally satisfied!Overall, I really love this book, just as much as the original. If Dr. Ashen decides to do a third book, I’d like to see him cover console games instead of being strictly limited to home computers, just so we can see more terrible old games we may or may not have heard of!
