Terrible bookThis book was clearly written from a viewpoint that cheating, lying and leading a double life is part of a growing process for a spouse that decides they have the right to act anyway they want regardless of the vows they made. There is no responsibility for this behavior-and it is clearly seen as an indicator that they are in a bad marriage that is not “meeting their needs”.It is exactly what is wrong with our society today - no responsibility, no consequence just do whatever makes you feel good no matter what the consequence. It goes on at length on how these cheaters and liars lead this double life on their way to a better life.Great read for a narcissist.

I've now read about five different books about divorce, including this one, as it was recommend to me by a friend who works in a bookstore and said a lot of people bought this book. I'm also going through therapy with two different psychologists, so I have a lot of viewpoints to sample from.The strength of this book (IMHO) is the validation of the absolute lunacy -- or "Crazy Time" -- that follows the divorce announcement. My husband of 16 years just announced one day that he was done, didn't think our relationship was worth working on. He agreed to one counseling session, that's it, and by the end of the hour, I knew he'd already left. Crazy time? Oh, yeah. -- So this book does a good job of explaining some of the less rational urges and actions that are typical in the aftermath of the divorce proclamation, and for me, knowing I wasn't the only person to experience it was helpful and reassuring. Also, it's very readable, with short chapters of theory and research data interspersed with case studies (or stories). Crazy time is not known for long attention spans, at least not for me.The downside of this book is that it focuses a lot on a dominant partner and a submissive partner in the relationship. And in my opinion, it gives the submissive partner free rein to do whatever they want or need to do to break out of their rut, including having affairs with other people, lying to their spouse, and not being willing to work on the relationship. Needless to say, by this model, I was the dominant one in the relationship: older, more educated, better off financially. But I wanted my partner to be able to grow if he wanted to. I bought him his business, I didn't pressure him to find a job when he took a year off, I encouraged his efforts. I never abused him or even yelled at him. Yes, I was disappointed and angry sometimes when he would promise to be home by a certain time and then be several hours late without calling -- that's common courtesy, right? Not abuse.So, because of this, he has the right to just dump me by the side of the road without so much as a hint of his unhappiness in advance? And being unwilling to work on trying to save us for even a couple of therapy sessions? He just gets to decide and leave? -- yes, there was another woman (half my age, thanks a lot for that) but I firmly believe he was already going that way and she just found fertile ground in his unhappiness. -- And I'm not saying I am without contribution to the end of this marriage; it does take two, after all. I wasn't perfect, and our marriage wasn't perfect. But my objection (to the book and to my own situation) is that I think an investment of 16 years is worth a little respect, time and effort to at least say, "Hey, I'm unhappy. Can we talk?" before it's already the end.Anyway, that's my main critique of the book: it's lets the "submissive" partners off the hook and holds the "dominant" partners accountable even if there was no abuse or warning or indication of unhappiness. Other books I've read, and my therapists' approach, have been less biased in this way, more even-handed.

If only I had known some of these things twenty years ago, I might still be married. This is an excellent book for people going through either a divorce or a separation with the hope of reconciliation. I do wish it had a different title since some of the issues in my own marriage involved "craziness" (read "depression") but once I got past that phrase, I was able to get so much insight and help from this book. It doesn't matter which side you're on--asking for the divorce or on the receiving end of the request--this book leads the reader through the stages in a very readable, approachable format. The second part goes into what happens next--dating, sex, remarriage. I'm not there yet--but I will be. I bought the book for my husband (the one who instigated the divorce) to help him understand his own feelings of guilt, sorrow, and how to move on. I'm glad I bought the book (first I checked it out from the library and ended up paying a big overdue fine) because it's one I will go back to many times in the next year or two as I process through my own changes after 40 years of marriage. Highly recommended!

I read this book when it was first published back in the early 80’s. To this day, I am grateful for the perspective, information and guidance it offers. Sadly, I just sent a copy to my daughter, who says that this book has been immensely helpful. A divorce, however one gets there, offers a chance to re-vision and restructure in ways that lead to a healthy self image, a better understanding of relationships...definitely a guide to a happier and better life. If you want to be a better, happier person following a divorce, I highly recommend “Crazy Time”.

I am not new to embedded designs an C, but the PIC's awesome number of processors and function register names etc. had me baffeled, but this book was a disapointment to me. Right at the beginning it presents the PIC18 Explorer board. So to be able to follow this book, I ordered this board, before going to deep into it. Unfortunately, it never used this board, instead it used a more expensive one. I cannot understand why the explorer board was pictured and explained in detail right at the beginning and then an other book is used. Well, I am upset, spending an other $100 for the explorer board, but not being able to get any help from this $60 book. I will still be reading this book in the hope that there will be some useful info for me. One thing I like is that the program listings include the MPLAB XC8 compiler listings.Including shipping, this book cost me $70 and I did get about $5 worth of info out of it.This might be a great book for some, it answers a lot of questions well, if you are looking for answers to the PIC18F45K2 using the EasyPIC V7 development board.

Slow boat from Germany it appears .. It would help to have a tracking number to check on shipping process. Took almost 2 month to get here after ordering it. Finally arrive today. Package was torn for tear. But book in package was in great shape other wise. Worth the wait for the content and projects covered in it. Contain a couple projects that was great interest for me because I'm working on similar projects related at work and looking for details on those topic/subjects.

All projects explained in detail using xc8 and mikroC pro compilers,18f45k22 controller, which makes it really practical book

Do not use with Kindle. The examples are small pictures and their text cannot be made larger by changing the Kindle font.

Well this is the one and only book that "embraces" the mighty XC8. Deserves five stars.Even though some examples are not clear and Mr. Ibrahim uses some very expensive equipments from time to time, this is a great book.

About the Author

J. F. Powers (1917-1999) was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, and studied at Northwestern University while holding a variety of jobs in Chicago and working on his writing. He published his first stories in The Catholic Worker and, as a pacifist, spent thirteen months in prison during World War II. Powers was the author of three collections of short stories and two novels—Morte D’Urban, which won the National Book Award, andWheat That Springeth Green—all of which have been reissued by New York Review Books. He lived in Ireland and the United States and taught for many years at St John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota.Denis Donoghue is University Professor at NYU, where he holds the Henry James Chair of English and American Letters. He is the author of The Practice of Reading, Words Alone: The Poet T.S. Eliot, and, most recently, The American Classics. (October 2006)

THE STORIES OF J.F. POWERS is a book to treasure. Powers died in 1999, but his reputation as perhaps the greatest comic chronicler of the 1950s Catholic Church endures. He published only five books in a career that spanned over five decades. Three of them were slim collections of short stories,all of which are included in this handsome volume. The other two were novels. The first, MORTE D'URBAN, a book I have read and reread at least four times, each time with much chuckling and great enjoyment, won the National Book Award in 1962. The second, WHEAT THAT SPRINGETH GREEN (1988), I read just a few years ago. Again,much chuckling, a pure pleasure to read.Because he was a perfectionist, Powers worked slowly. His resulting stories were, to my mind, perfect. His subject? The Catholic Church, its clergy and religious, and its faithful members in the mid-twentieth century Midwest. In these stories his priests, nuns and parishioners are presented in thoroughly human terms, warts and all. Catholics from that era cannot help but relate. They will smirk, smile, chuckle, guffaw. The humor sneaks up on you, surprises you into laughter.I can remember, as a child, seeing Powers' first book, PRINCE OF DARKNESS AND OTHER STORIES (1947), a slim paperback in a rack of religious books and pamphlets in the back of our church. My mother, always an avid reader, must have bought it, because I discovered it in our home bookcase my senior year of high school. One story and I was hooked. I probably didn't realize it then, but I had discovered buried treasure.I am so pleased that NYRB has made all of Powers' stories finally available in a single volume. I had read his final collection, HOW THE FISHES LIVE (1975), but not the middle one. THE PRESENCE OF GRACE (1956). Now I have, and I will continue sampling these stories for a long time. It's the kind of book you can open anywhere, to any story. Every one is perfect, complete, a finely polished gem. My highest recommendation.- Tim Bazzett, author of the memoir, BOOKLOVER

For this review I concentrate on J. F. Power’s priestly stories which comprise two thirds or so of the book’s contents. The tribulations of the Roman Catholic priesthood is a major concern of fiction.Powers was admired by his literary peers for his proficiency in the short story. One of his two novels won a National Book Award, but he is generally considered a short fiction master who occasionally turned out a novel than vice versa.In the major elements of fiction writing he is adept. He gives his characters a presence; he renders settings with clarity and impact; and bestows on the milieu his tales takes place in, a strong sense of authenticity. He has been called a writer’s writer, a praise that signifies a close study of his works helps one learn the craft of story writing.An overview of the priestly stories suggest to me Powers is a pessimist about the efficacy of the vocation at the parish level. He is not the first Roman Catholic to reprove his/her church. Joyce comes to mind in that regard. Only Powers’ imparts an aura not so much of distaste but of regret. Here are men of the cloth who want to fulfill the broader duties of compassion and succor to the laity but find themselves mired in intra politics and convention. The incidents of conflict are small in scale but large in implication. Story after story of petty intrigue and contention add up to a bleak regard of priesthood functioning at a parochial level. Despite the amount of detail pertinent to the nitty-gritty of parish activity, the stories emanate I get an impression of corporate politics in priestly garb. Yet the author’s tone isn’t scathing; more a brooding contemplation such as suggested by the painting of Jesus pondering Jerusalem from a hill side. Powers, like any pessimist, is a disappointed idealist.I think the collection is rather uneven because “Moonshot” is formatted as a one act play, and “Folks” in the form of a short letter between a preface and an after word is puzzling as to how a reader is to take it.A brief comment on the author. Powers never wore a priest’s cloth, though he did attend Catholic seminary and worked in a Catholic associated university. He included several priests among his best friends. From comments by those who knew him I gather he wasn’t a constant writer in the sense of Trollope with his one thousand words a day timed to two hundred and fifty words every quarter hour. Rather Powers was a fitful writer whose stints at composition occurred between intervals of sundry activities. One started on a story though he was dogged in its completion. He revised copiously until, as his daughter put it, the pile of pages had the density of a plank. Between stories he wrote miles of letters. His daughter Katherine has compiled them in a book the title of which– Suitable Accommodations – comes from a favorite expression of her father who was rather nomadic in his choice of residences.. Her preface provides considerable background on a well loved father. From it I drew the above remarks.

Beforehand I'd just like to say that I am a priest and that this review is written from that perspective.These stories focus of priestly life of the mid-twentieth century. They include many details and insights into certain realities of what priests do. In particular, the in which he is able to express the interpersonal interactions between priests is very interesting. He has hit the nail on the head in many ways, one example being the awkward interactions between the Bishop and a priest in the story "Zeal." The Bishop finds that he just can't get away from Fr. Early fast enough and yet he then goes looking for him. He's uncomfortable around him, yet he misses him when he's gone.Also, in "A Losing Game," Powers has put into words what many priests have felt when looking for things for their rooms. In this story, the pastor of the parish keeps everything (i.e., tables, chairs, and other furniture) hidden away, so that no one can use it. The way in which the junior priest finally manages to get the easy chair he wants really does communicate the odd style of passive communication that so many priests use amongst each other for various reasons.Powers overall does an excellent job in showing certain aspects of priestly life of which people are often unaware. I recommend these short stories to anyone who wants to understand priestly culture better. In particular, I think that many priests will find these stories quite amusing and relatable.

This story takes you to the Pacific Northwest, a place where many men work hard as lumberjacks. It's a dangerous job. The men need to be strong, well muscled, and many are very handsome. For Foreman Samuel Pearce believes women should not be allowed at any lumber sites. Pat Clarke's old father works as the cook at Pearce's site. His daughter has to disguise herself as a teen aged boy, which she'll continue after her dad dies and she takes over the cooking. She's 18 years old and quite attractive, but binding her breasts is often painful. It's not too far along before Pearce is surprised one evening as he finds her sleeping in his bathtub. Yeah, the is a great story, and Pearce keeps her secret under wraps. Fun story to read, but there is also extreme danger for Pat when one lumberman keeps trying to get her to his bed. Well written and exciting.

A different setting, the Pacific Northwest. In true Kathleen Ball style, love shines through. Pat lost her father in this logging camp. He brought her here under pretense. The camp doesn't allow women, so she disguised herself as a boy to help her father. When he passes away she bids with Samuel Pearse the camp forman to take over the job. A trial of "his" work and cooking land the job. Things start happening to bring Pat and Samuel closer. He is injured, they are destined to share her cabin as soon as it is finished, his fathers partner has a daughter that arrives to marry Samuel without his consent or knowledge of her impending arrival. She is selfish and wreaks havoc in the camp. You will love this book. Fast read and very enjoyable. Another winner for Kathleen Ball.I received this book as an ARC and the opinions in the review are my own.
