The writing style was endearing (despite the errors) and I liked the guy's attitude.Cons: Probably too much information about tattoo machine logistics and functionality for a beginning artist (parts of it read like a machine manual). Very little information on technique. Needs much more information about sanitization and licensing.

Great information with lots of detailed pictures. A must if you want to learn the details and values of antique American frames.

I bought this book hoping to get some real specific information on buying and selling antique american frames. I enjoyed reading this book because it gave me a bigger picture of how the frame styles developed in America (even though I also felt like Mr. Wilner's chatty tone seemed to talk down to his audience). I agree with some of the other reviewers in that this certainly is an enthusiastic book and creates awareness for people to look at what surrounds the picture instead of just looking at the painting. Antique frames should certainly be studied and written about and noticed and matched with the right paintings. I do have some complaints however. I am an antiques dealer and I have some other books in the Confident Collector series. I really don't think this book fits in the same spirit as the rest of the series. I think Mr. Wilner's prices are all off base with the real world of antiques and collecting. They seem to be a self-serving guide to prices in his shop alone. I go to lots of auctions and antique markets in many states and have been in the business for many years of selling both paintings and frames and I rarely have seen frames alone sell for the kind of values he is giving them. I know that prices are going up since more awareness has made people appreciate the so-called art of the frame more. I have seen that there are many exhibits and articles on antique frames in the last few years, and I have seen that frames are starting to cost more as people become more aware that frames can be as important as a painting.I know that people like Mr. Wilner are benefiting the public by educating them on what a good frame is. I agree that some frames are very valuable, like an original Stanford White or a signed artists frame (as described in the book), but it seems that Mr. Wilner's book attempts to make all American frames seem valuable and that just can't be true. It's not true of American furniture or other antiques, they all have highs and lows, so frames must too. Like for example simple black Eastlake print frames in his book are starting at $2500, but those kinds of frames can be found at nearly every antiques mall for well under $500. There is no indication in the text about why Mr. Wilner finds Eastlake frames are suddenly so valuable other than that he says so. Also Mr. Wilner's book seems to be the only one in the series that he is the only dealer listed. Other books list other experts and sources to buy or find out more about the specific antique. Overall, I think that for people who know nothing about frames and want some idea of what they are about and to learn some general history, the chapter text is quite informative but the dates of the frames shown are not in chronological order which is somewhat confusing. Unfortunately the black and white pictures are so small and fuzzy and such bad quality that it is very difficult to see the detail in the frames, so how can you tell if you have one of the valuable ones or not? The photo captions themselves don't really give much extra information I wish they talked more about the decorative motifs or described the frames better since the photos are so bad. As generalist antique guides go it's a decent overview. I would just tell anyone to take the Price Guide part of this with a very large grain of salt, since the frame prices seem to be on the moon instead of in the real world of american antiques.

It struck me as odd that people were tossing these things of craftsmanship and age simply because they didn't think they could profit in a monetary sense. It was the death and destruction of antique frames that has made them rare. So many died, so so many could live. I am sure marketing was the key factor in showing the buyer with the bucks the joy and appreciation of the vintage frames beauty. And so to Mr. Eli Wilner belong the spoils. I found the book enlightening and enriching. Dealers who trade in these wares should buy numerous copies and send them out to their customers for the holidays.

The meat loaf is also incredible.Additional tips: Invest in many, varied spices and fresh herbs, a good balsamic vinegar, and keep a bowl of fresh lemons on the table. There IS life after salt!

We spent over $70 just ordering low-salt cookbooks for my mother's Christmas gift as she was recently put on a restricted salt diet.. Out of the three we ordered, only one was "fairly" good. In the mean time, she ordered this one for herself and shared it with our family. I was stunned !! the recipes are all ingredients we have on hand or are easily accessible at "any" grocery store, as well as cheap to purchase. The recipes are not over the top time consuming and gourmet, making it easy for almost any level of cooking experience easy to do and for those whom are busy.. The serving sizes were shocking compared to the cookbooks we ordered for her, there was ample servings while still maintaining a low-salt diet. I got this so I could provide proper food for my Mom after she had a heart attack. I was skeptical at first that there would be anything worth making or that it would taste good. Excellent book. The author did a brilliant job in making classic philosophy accessible.The book includes some of the most interesting and relatable philosophical ideas that I found very useful. The introduction for each chapter is clear, refreshing, and very helpful. The extract from The Mediation by Marcus Aurelius, in particular, is the one I will reread again and again.Strongly recommend it to those who are interested in philosophy or those who want to live a better life.

I found this book author has picked good quotes from various thinkers which illustrate how one would should approach everyday living, how to live honorably and deal with mistakes and learn along the way. The volume does not give quick answers, but emphasizes how to persevere and grow.

A well-written, thoughtful, enjoyable read that addresses just what it says. One of my favorite reads in a while.

Definitely glad I read this book. I got so engrossed I panicked about the state of my child, only to learn my concern was overblown. After reading this and How to Raise an Adult, we have planned an "adult transition plan" beginning on 16th birthday (soon).

As a parent and teacher in an affluent suburban community, this book was eye-opening and helpful. The author directly address the issue of perfectionism that is creating a society of emotionally damaged and isolated individuals. The author also addresses materialism, values, discipline, warmth, acceptance, and the act of being present.

I really enjoyed this book. It brought to life so many issues that I dealt with i my childhood and helped me work thru how I can be a better father. Very well written and a pleasure to read

Good book if you are raising kids, especially if you're in an upper middle class or rich community. I read the book, my husband saw Dr. Levine give a lecture. He thought it was 100% worth the time and money. My book club found this a good read.

The Price of Privilege is one of the better books I've read in quite some time. I found it insightful, approachable, and practical.While the majority of the book is about the psychological challenges kids from affluent homes are experiencing, I would recommend this book to any parent. The book also indirectly points out challenges facing our world and society, which I found refreshing. While we, to a large extent, live in a capitalist world, there are many dangers to becoming a materialistic society. Madeline does a nice job acknowledging the dangers and offering a perspective that is workable within our culture and society.

Good book on dealing with your privileged kids, but it was light on action plans to implement. Maybe there is no solution but it seems to me that privilege basically delays maturation and as parents we can't let them fall behind their peers in this respect.

Her style of writing is very clear and feels like she is approachable, yet I love that the book is told from both her research and experiences. I found traces of myself and my family members in every chapter. She reminds us what we need to focus on as parents or, in my case, as a teacher. This book also warns against the culture of affluence. It identifies key warning signs and threats that could affect your family. I'd consider this book a worthwhile read.

I read this book 6 years ago when my daughter was in high school. I wish I had read it even earlier. For obsessive-compulsive helicopter parents (who are this way because they want to do everything they can for their child) like I was, and find that this doesn't seem to cause anything but conflict with your child, it is mandatory reading. Stepping back and allowing your child to make mistakes and learn from them by themselves empowers them to be capable adults. Not to mention happier people. You can start a whole new relationship with your child, but this is a process that takes time.

This may have been one of the top 1-2 books I've read this year - which needs to be contextually framed by the fact that I typically have time to read no more than 4-5 books each year anyway. It explores the multiple dimensions of increased productivity, work, an increasing population - and the continued and rapid encroachment of technology in the displacement of workers. Most of those workers up to now have been more production-oriented, but will the rise of computers and technology in the future signal the beginning of the loss of jobs for knowledge workers? Given that this book was written close to 15 years ago - it was prescient in some of its predictions, and especially telling in light of the recent (and persistent) recession - and where 1 in 5 low wage jobs were lost in the recession, but in the recovery, low wage jobs have represented close to 3 in 5 jobs created. Read this book, but don't plan on having a good night's sleep on the day you finish it (unless you're lucky enough to already be retired).

"We are entering a new age of global markets and automated production. The road to a near-workerless economy is within sight. Whether that road leads to a safe haven or a terrible abyss will depend on how well civilization prepares for the post-market era that will follow on the heels of the Third Industrial Revolution. The end of work could spell a death sentence for civilization as we have come to know it. The end of work could also signal the beginning of a great social transformation, a rebirth of the human spirit. The future lies in our hands."Thus ends the book, leaving no neat little answers - negative OR positive, but urging us to open our eyes and look around us. I'd seen him on C-span and promptly ordered his book through Amazon. This was when it first came out in hardcover and my oldest son, assured of a future work using skills from his newly obtained Masters in Computer Science, was concerned I was reading such a book. "Isn't he one of those Luddites?" I think of myself as a wanna be Luddite, but I saw no signs of this in the book. Instead, Rifkin seems to be concerned with the coming affects of the Informational Revolution.The book begins with a history of the Industrial Revolution. He gives us a nice tour of the birth of materialism as a concept created and promoted by economists and businessmen. "The term `consumption," he tells us, "has both English and French roots. In its original form, to consume meant to destroy, to pillage, to subdue, to exhaust. It is a word steeped in violence and until the present century had only negative connotations."The chapter, "Technology and the Afro-American Experience," addresses the effects of slavery, the supposed freedom of sharecropping, the loss of jobs as a consequence of the invention of the mechanical cotton picker, the rush to the cities and the subsequent loss of jobs as technology slowly progressed. There is a correlation to the success of whichever modern day technology we are experiencing, and the situation in the inner-cities. "Today, millions of African-Americans find themselves hopelesly trapped in a permanent underclass. Unskilled and unneeded, the commodity value of their labor has been rendered virtually useless by the automated technologies that have come to displace them in the new high-tech global economy."One chapter is entitled "No More Farmers" and discusses the advances of robotizing replacing tasks such as harvesting and livestock management, as well as the end of outdoor agriculture. Other chapters deal with the future for retail, service, blue collar jobs, the declining middle class and the growing chasm between the haves and the have-nots.In the chapter titled, "A More Dangerous World," he cites the Merva and Fowles study, saying that it "showed a striking correlation between growing wage inequality and increased criminal activity." "Rising unemployment and loss of hope for a better future are among the reasons that tens of thousands of young teenagers are turning to a life of crime and violence."He does point out that the explosion of the Third Revolution is going to make the social wounds we've tried to heal seem like paper cuts, but does not claim that we should unhook our computers and resist the revolutionary explosion. His suggestion is that we work on `empowering' the Third Sector' - the independent sector - and turn back to community, to helping each other before it is too late. " A new generation might transcend the narrow limits of nationalism and begin to think and act as common memebers of the human race, with shared commitments to each other, the community, and the larger biosphere." He does offer that since hi-tech advances may mean fewer jobs in the market economy, the only way to make sure those whose jobs are lost will be compensated is to have the government supply compensation. Naturally, this gives a flash-back to the welfare system, which I think has freaked out a few reviewers, paralyzing them into a sort of retro response. But Rifkin isn't just talking about the recipients of old - those stereotypical lower-income, under-educated inner city folks, he's talking about many more people. In my family, my middle son is a hands on kind of worker who in the past might have been a farmer. No matter how much education he gets, he isn't one of those who will sit well in the new techno age, and already he's feeling the pressures. The high paying jobs for him are life-threatening, so the kind of work he's hired for is low paying, not enough to support himself, let alone the family he has decided he can't afford to start. Rifkin isn't doing retro work - he suggests tying the subsidized income to service in the community, which he suggests migh help the "growth and development of the social economy and facilitate the long-term transition into a community-centered, service-oriented culture."His answers are not clearly spelled out - he offers suggestions and insight into where we might be going as a race (the human race). The truth is, we all need to ask some questions and help find the answers. For those whose minds are set firmly in any direction, you'll get from this book very little - for those with open minds, regardless of your political view of the world, you may find this to be a door to the future.

I am convinced that the future Rifkin describes is real. Some of his solutions are credible, some are not. There's an obvious hole in his argument for the "Third Sector." He assumes that money diverted to the Third Sector will result in employment, but what if these organizations embrace technology just as industry has? That is already occurring and will continue to occur. If the only solution is for the government to become the employer for 90% of the population, we are all in trouble. The only reasonable approach that I can think of is for the government to become a clearing house for mandatory donations by corporations and the wealthy. That would put the power for determining worthy activity in the hands of many, instead of in the hands of government. We could and should be doing this right now. Instead of taxing corporations and the wealthy, the government should require donations to tax-exempt entities and individuals with low incomes. This would insure a "freer" society and would breed harmony between haves and have-nots. It would also prevent the government from spending $1T a year on Big Brother and the Warfare State, which benefits no one but those employed by the military-industrial complex. Will the government willingly give up the power of the purse? Only if people demanded it.

The author wrote this book years ago, based on the insight that corporations are replacing labor with computer software, robots and fear imposed to drive more productivity. Those ughly forces are still very much at work. However, the author has subsequently written The Third Industrial Revolution, which shows how we can shift from fossil fuels to renewables and create more work by creating an abundance of energy.

Scary but true. Read it twice if you have the time.
