I just finished reading Bonnie Zieman’s memoir, Fading Out of the JW Cult, and I would highly recommend this book. What makes her story so special is that the protagonist is an experienced psychotherapist. While sharing her story, she explains the psychological manipulation at play in trying to shape her personality. In my opinion, Bonnie’s 2016 memoir is a must-read book for anyone who wants to understand how the Watchtower (intentionally) and family (mostly well-intentioned) manipulates children and teenagers of Jehovah’s Witnesses. If David Letterman was reviewing Bonnie’s memoir on his Late Night Show, he would normally present ten reasons for why the public should read her book. But because we have familial and non-familial (a cult) at play unduly influencing Bonnie, I have decided to enlarge the list to fifteen, which are from 15 to one:15. You will get to meet Bonnie’s paternal grandfather, who was the epitome of a true believer, putting his three young sons in an orphanage so he could proselytize the teachings of Charles Taze Russell in eastern Canada. Not a good omen for Bonnie’s father (familial) and his potential parenting skills14. If you did not already know it, Canadian Watchtower executives do love their body massages as Bonnie’s young, naïve massage therapist mother discovered.13. Believe it or not, Armageddon was just around the corner in 1941, but Bonnie’s parents ignored Judge Rutherford’s warnings not to marry or have children because the end was so close. You will be delighted to learn how they chose to spend their time, instead of preaching doom-and-gloom for non-JW believers at Armageddon.12. Bribing Bonnie with six sticks of grape gum, then just a very little girl, to go out in the Watchtower Street work will leave you wondering, “What was her mama thinking?”11. Bonnie’s mom could have easily been an accessory to a major crime. But with a little luck, and not Jehovah’s invisible hand, “being lucky” saves the day.10. The story of Bonnie’s childhood friend, Bobby, will tear at your heart strings, an experience that proved to be a significant coming-of-age wake-up call for her.9. Bonnie’s baptism experience is an indictment of Watchtower’s blatant use of undue influence on children by JW parents. You will love Bonnie’s mom, but not on this occasion, although it’s really Watchtower’s psychological manipulation.8. If you think that you can trust good JW young men to behave on dates, one chapter in her book will definitely change your mind.7. In a chapter called The Slap, Bonnie and her father awaken to the reality that dysfunction is a major bi-product of Watchtower’s culture, although neither of them knew it at the time; the invisible hand of Watchtower at work.6. A chapter about Bonnie getting married ‘properly’ according to a died-in-the-wool JW elder in her husband’s family could only happen in JW La-la Land.5. If you have the misguided belief that Watchtower leaders are all kind, loving and benevolent, Bonnie describes a dinner scene with a circuit oversee that should jolt you to your senses. Unfortunately, behind-the scenes behavior like this are not that uncommon because of the nature of Watchtower’s pyramid-like culture.4. If you think Watchtower’s long-time VP, Fred Franz, was not crazy, Bonnie will set you straight several times in her book. Fred Franz, I believe, was plighted with a severe case of Asperger’s Syndrome, and he was allowed to set policy and prophesy future events for Watchtower without any accountability.3. When a person leaves Watchtower, he or she must be prepared to negotiate a long and challenging learning curve if they want to find and claim their authentic identity. Bonnie’s book is an excellent roadmap to show readers how it can be done in spite of massive amounts of misinformation and emotional abuse.2. For me personally, the total lack of human feelings and emotions (the cult identity) by hard-core true-believing JWs is brought home to roost in chapter 36. While reading this chapter, I was reminded that anyone who chooses to attend and confess at a JW Judicial Committee Meeting should never go alone. A good attorney and someone from the press should be there with them, although if those were the conditions, it could mean the Waterloo for these kinds of Watchtower-style kangaroo courts and sinister undue influence.1. In Chapter 2, Bonnie tells the story about The Gift, a talk delivered by a District Overseer at a 1978 Montreal convention. It was an unplanned gift, that had it been filmed live and preserved, it would have brought Watchtower to its knees and shown the public how Watchtower psychologically manipulates its members. You can read all about “the gift” and much more in Bonnie Zieman’s excellent memoir, Fading Out of the JW Cult.

What a great memoir! Not only was it a story of her life but, Ms. Zieman also included her training as a therapist in this book. It helped me with some guilt I didn't even realize I had from leaving the JW cult. Thank you Bonnie!

I was never a babtized witness but was raised as one. Virtually my whole family is a Jehovah's Witness , and this book truly describes the guilt and brainwashing one endures. As an adult, I sometimes thought about studying and becoming a witness like the rest of my family, as like you said, once your indoctrinated, it is hard to ever put out of your mind. However, this nagging, deep within my heart, could never let me be secure in my decision and instead raised mariads of questions that could never be answered. However, always feeling like I never had enough knowledge of the "truth" still made me want to learn more and see where the witnesses and my family have the practices they have and if they really are from the Bible. This so-called religion has always been a large dark cloud over me. I was so glad I never became a babtized witness! This book is a true eye opener and shows that my feelings are perfectly normal, and the questions I have always had, now have some answers. Thank you for this amazing book.

It was very instructive about JW history and deeply personal about the difficulties of being raised as a JW.

I, too, was one of Jehovah's Witnesses. This is truly a journey of healing, mind, body, soul, and yes, life. Freedom to use the gift that all of us were given, choice, freedom to decide what we want to do! Every day! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with others who have also lost family and friends through unnatural family shunning.

From the moment I started reading I was 100% captivated! What a fascinating and disturbing memoir! I found that I could relate to your life story in so many ways. I appreciate your honesty and willingness to share your story... a story that will help so many of us survivors feel not so alone :)Thank you Bonnie for your bravery!Daisy

Being raised in a jw. Home. Born in. This book helped me see all of the cult feelings I thought it had but was to afraid to say. Thank you Bonnie for sharing.

Amazing story of a brave woman.

I can see why this is a favorite of children and young adults. It is fun for adults who have had some mythology education. It is especially for boys.I am thankful that the library was able to loan both the Kindle version and the Overdrive Audio version. I felt like I could relate with the main character with his dyslexia and ADHD. That is part of the reason I have to have both medias going for me to stay with it. My eyes didn't track well when I was younger, but now I have a harder time. Now, if only the book was about a girl...

I bought this book because it was on one of those $.99 lists and I thought, "What the heck." This book took me back 50 years to some of my first pre-teen adventure books, e.g. the Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The book is written from the standpoint of the protagonist who is pretty much a current pre-teen (I have 2 and one teen) with a wry irreverent sense of humor, as have many of the characters, "We don't say the "c" word." It's not the "c" word you think. The book is fun and fast moving and if you have teen/pre-teens you will recognize a fair amount of their behavior while chuckling at them. The adults are also somewhat caricatures of the typical adult, but probably as many pre-teens see us.It's fun. If you are an adult read it with your pre-teen, early teen as something to do together or in the car on a trip. You may surprise yourself that you have really enjoyed it.

A flash of lighting shatters the night sky, almost angry. Maybe Zeus is still mad. If you didn’t know about that, then you should really check out the Percy Jackson books. When you read about Percy Jackson’s adventures, like all other awesome books, you feel like you are the main character. You feel like you’ve beheaded a hydra, blown up the Gateway arch, and held a lightning bolt in your hand. The story starts with Percy warning us about reading it. Like something about if you find something familiar, then close the book immediately. Um, I read it on a Kindle, how can you close a Kindle? Then it goes on about his life. When his mom takes him on a vacation to the beach away from his abusive stepfather, she tries to get him to a camp to stop a minotaur from killing him. Yeah, a minotaur. On the way there, he finds his best friend has goat legs. Like a lot of other stories, Percy loses consciousness. When he wakes up, he finds himself in a camp full of half-gods, satyrs, a centaur, and a god of wine that always says peoples’ names wrong. Then he finds that the minotaur has sent his mother to the underworld and he has killed the minotaur. When he finds out he is the son of the sea god, Zeus gives him a death threat because he thinks that Percy took his most powerful lightning bolt. Then Percy has to go on a quest along America, fighting monsters, metal spiders, and medusa. And then into the underworld. When he does, he finds a terrible mistake…and a traitor. But enough about that! I don’t want to give you too many spoilers.I actually watched the (TERRIBLE!) movie about Percy Jackson before I read the book. After I read the book and watched the movie again, I decided that I would never watch the movie again. (Seriously, make a note: Never watch the Percy Jackson movie). The book is infinite times better, and in my opinion they ruined everything when they made the movie.Yes, I own all of the Percy Jackson books, and all of the Heroes of Olympus, the next series. Rumor has it that there is another series about norse gods and heroes. As Dionysus would say, “You’ve heard of Peter Johnson. Now, get ready for Magno Cheese.” (Magnus Chase)

My 10 year old son has read everything by Rick Riordan and absolutely LOVES the series. These books are good enough to tear him away from his iPod and keep him waiting by the mailbox for the next book to arrive! Now I'm reading them too, and we have dinner conversation about Greek mythology and American history. Recommended for any young person learning the joy of books!

I knew of the series because of the movies being released and being a big Harry Potter fan, similar genres. When my son and I finished the HP series we went looking for something else. The Percy series really hit the spot. No spoilers for the story, but the book also made my son curious about mythology.

This was a book that my son was eager to read. This was a required reading for 5th grade and he finished it pretty quickly. This is the beginning of the series and Percy Jackson is a very interesting book. I love that it's good for all ages, I enjoyed it as well.Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is on the most dangerous quest of his life. With the help of a satyr and a daughter of Athena, Percy must journey across the United States to catch a thief who has stolen the original weapon of mass destruction — Zeus’ master bolt. Along the way, he must face a host of mythological enemies determined to stop him. Most of all, he must come to terms with a father he has never known, and an Oracle that has warned him of betrayal by a friend.

The Lightning Thief is the first book in the Percy Jackson series. It is fast paced, well-written, and full of loveable, believable characters -- even if they are children of gods. This whole series is an excellent read for anyone, and a choice pick for parents who are looking for exciting, fun, clean books for both boys and girls to read.As a school librarian, I could rarely keep this book on the shelf more than half a day. As a grandparent, I've gifted it to the grandkids, and even given copies to adult friends. It is one of those rare finds these days: a truly well-written, good book with a universal theme that still manages to be fresh.

While this book is intended for a younger set, I, an older set, still enjoyed the adventures of the accused lightning thief, Percy Jackson. This tale was interesting, convoluted and moved along at an enjoyable pace. One learns quite a bit about the Greek and Roman Gods as the pages are perused and you try to puzzle out how he is going to get out of the predicament he currently was in only to end up in one after another. It was a nice read.

Anyone that makes you laugh OUT LOUD with just the written word takes great talent! Add a kick ass story that's amazingly well written from the first page AND has well rounded, believable characters that you can't help but love, makes for one of the best books of this genre I have read in a very long time. Laughing out loud isn't the only thing that'll be coming out of your mouth either, so don't read around the littles and if you have a swear jar wherever you are when you read it, be prepared to owe a small fortune to it by the end of this tale extraordinaire!!! Well done D.A. Simpson!!! When's the next one due because I'm ready right now!

I loved, loved, loved this book!!! I am a big Zompoc book fan so I've read LOTS of them, and this one had everything I want!! The characters were GREAT, and if there is ever a zombie apocalypse these are the people I want to be with. There's nothing better than a bunch of military guys using their skills to take down zombies and protect other survivors. The story was fascinating, the pace was great, and I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I was never disappointed. The only bad part of this book was the fact that it had to end. This author is fantastic and I highly recommend this book. I can't wait for his next book to come out!! Hurry, hurry, hurry...

Wow! What a story! I don’t know where this David Simpson has been hiding, I guess in a truck stop or something but he did such a bang up job on this book! I had to check twice to make sure I had read it correctly that this was his first book! Dang! His first book at it was freakin’ phenomenal! I had heard about it when it had won the book of the month in the book club I belong to. I read the blurb and thought I would give it a shot…not knowing what to expect because I didn’t know this author and was pleasantly surprised when I started to read it. I love discovering new zombie stories and new authors and this was like finding a diamond in the rough! The Hope Diamond of diamonds! It is that good! From start to finish, the action keeps on rolling(see what I did there?…rolling) and never stops. I loved the characters which were well described and so likeable and relatable. This is a must add to anyone’s read list that loves zombies or just loves a well written story that will keep you entertained for hours! All I can say is you won’t be disappointed!

Ok.. I like it. No... I don't know a lot about big rigs even tho a few friends have driven for 20 years.. I never understood why someone would not armor up a big rig like this in zombie novels.. not being a truck driver tho (do have a class b) I thought that maybe an armored car like brinks would be cool.. diesel lasts longer.. it is easy to come by.. and enough weight and you can push stuff aside.. being able to sleep in the thing is a plus too... Ok.. I like that part.. but the characters are great. I ride OLD Harleys but am not that hidebound that I don't see the value of crotch rockets... The women? well... yeah.. maybe.. kinda sorta. I have run into my share of competent ones.. this kinda sorta has more than it's share. and.. they all of course are young and gorgeous.. my chances of that all happening? I would say slim to none..The firearms.. Ok.. I admit to being a stickler... going to the range in an hour.. but the guns are right.. this is huge to me.Anyway.. there is nothing spectacular about any of that stuff but it all comes together to make for a VERY enjoyable read .. This is fast paced and fun.

For North America, the world ends at 6am, Eastern Standard Time. And when the zombie apocalypse goes down, may you be so lucky as to find yourself at the Three Flags Truck Stop, nestled in the outskirts of Reno, just off Route 395. Now, if you don't mind a bit of historical fun fact, Route 395 is a stretch of road that ran from San Diego to the Canadian border.Gunny's old Peterbilt semi had been up and down Route 395 ad nauseam, mostly coz Gunny always made it a point to make a pit stop at his favorite truck stop. Some more fun facts? Great. The family what's owned the Three Flags Truck Stop for decades had marketed it as the oldest truck stop in Nevada. It's a piece of nostalgia, of roadside Americana. It comes complete with a convenience store and tourist trap. Its proprietor, crusty old Cobb, is a veteran and he honors the military and his fallen compadres mightily. It's why heaps of truckers - a lot of whom are former servicemen - frequent the place, Gunny being only one of them. It's been a minute since I'd read a zombie thriller this knock-my-socks-off. Zombie Road: Convoy of Carnage should be adapted to cinema, except there's the controversy that's sure to surface surrounding the root of the zombie apocalypse. I won't say more other than certain folks are bound to get salty. Some plot spoilers. It's hard to believe it's David A. Simpson's debut novel. It's a remarkably polished read. It's tremendously satisfying to follow the steps taken by our ragtag band as they strive to rebuild a society after such a catalysmic collapse. At the center of it is Gunny, a trucker who was hauling lumber when the dead began to walk. But he's not the only interesting character. The author surrounds him with a grand cast of colorful personalities. Sarah the fearless biker who's also an EMT. Scratch with the trucker with the metal prosthetic arm. "Stabby McStabsalot" a.k.a. Jody, the British death metal musician. The very straight-laced Sheriff's Deputy "Boomquifa" Collins. Long Dawg, the hip hop guy with the silver teeth and gold chains and neck tattoos who strategically blasts his rap music real loud. There's even a country music band. Now that's a squad.Should the zombie apocalypse go down, your having watched The Walking Dead show may have screwed you. TWD would have you think it's super-easy to drive something pointy into a zombie skull. With one gristly scene, this book shows it ain't so:"The blade slid off the hard bone and down the side of the creature's face, leaving a deep furrow and ripping its ear off as a large piece of scalp flapped over, revealing the yellowish bone of the skull.'Oh, that's sick,' someone said as the snarling, flailing thing snapped at Gunny's wrist. He hurriedly slammed the knife down a second time, and again it careened off of the skull, not driving in like it was supposed to, but grooving down the other side of its head."Just as I was settling down to thinking this book is gonna be all about how folks hold off the zombie apocalypse while at a truck stop, I happened to glance at the book title again. The plot goes on to reveal why it's a bad idea to linger at Three Flags. And what's a post-apocalyptic survival story without someone wanting to get back home to their loved ones? Cue the 2400-mile road trip and the start of a riproaring series. Purists may get salty because these zombies aren't the Romero shamblers but, rather, more like the speed freak rage monsters from 28 Days Later or World War Z. I saw screw tradition - zombies with good cardio always more scary than shamblers. This author knows how to tell a story. Not just with the worldbuilding stuff and the escalation of tension and stakes and the occasional twists he tosses in. He's also brilliant at establishing a tight sense of camaraderie among the survivors. Old Cobb and Gunny are the sorts of hardcases I want to ride with when TEOTWAWKI hits. But I love that there's a micro-community at Three Flags, different folks who are experts at this and that and disparate strangers coming together. I just love how the author puts everything together. It's also a well-edited book, perhaps courtesy of the author's "nit-picky OCD, grammar-Nazi partner in life." So, pretty much a perfect zombie read.

Well now, I have a new author to follow! Having read a couple of hundred (no lie!) Zombie novels it takes a well written story to get me "caught up" in the tale. Simpson's fledgling novel is as good as it gets. If he keeps this quality up he will become one of the genre's greats. The only disappointment was at the novel's end....I found there wasn't a sequel available yet. I implore you Mr. Simpson, get to work!!!

Alan Watts is very fond of quoting William Blake's aphorism "A Fool Who Persists in His Folly Will Become Wise," as a means of explaining Zen philosophy to western students. If you're already a fan of Alan Watts, that quotation sums up this lecture series perfectly.Out of Your Mind is a much more thorough, and thoughtfully compiled set than this one is (MP3 download is available at significant savings: Out Of Your Mind: The Nature of Consciousness I). I do not regret the purchase in the least and have enjoyed listening to this presentation. However, it doesn't bear comparison with Out of Your Mind.Much of this is similar to lectures given on the Out of Your Mind lecture series. Many are different recordings from different times, yet are nearly word for word. Sometimes this will lead Watts onto a different vignette of thought that contain tasty morsels of hitherto unheard wisdom. This is a philosophical casserole containing left over bits that have been pieced together by the philosophers of capitalism over at SoundsTrue Media. I'm sorry to report that the same spaced-out obnoxious announcer and lame corporate mystic sounding guitar intros from the Out of Your Mind series is ever present on this collection. All the same, I enjoyed the collection and would recommend it to anyone *after* they have listened to the Out of Your Mind lecture series. I've listened to the Out of Your Mind collection so many times, I tune it out now because I always know what Watts will say next. So in light of that, it's been wonderful to hear it all again, in a different order with a new bit here or there to spice it up and secure my attention. So if you didn't get it the first time, keep on keeping on and eventually we'll all reach enlightenment!Namu Myoho Renge Kyo :)

Alan Watts has a fantastic wry sense of humor and wonderful insights about religion, psychology, history and life in general. It is a pleasure listening to him and I am sad every time one disc ends knowing I am closer to running out of "new" Watts recordings. However, this collection of lectures has too many moments where the same story or nugget of wisdom is repeated almost verbatim from a CD earlier in the set. Out of Your Mind is more varied and expansive journey start to finish. I don't regret buying this and I certainly don't dislike it but I would suggest Out of Your Mind as a higher quality alternative.

I love this format as Alan Watts is so easy to listen to. He explains what are potentially complex issues in really straight forward terms and he can compare the western and eastern points of view in simple clear language. This is what makes the difference between him and other people I have listened to. The set itself takes a bit of time to get through as most of the 10 CD's are around 75 minutes long but for Alan Watts fans I don't think that would be a problem.

It was while reading Watts ('The Wisdom of Insecurity') that it finally dawned on me what 'the experiencer is the experience' meant and 'felt' like. For those of us who need this kind of stuff explained to us...I haven't heard anyone put it any simpler than Watts (to me he goes well with J. Krishnamurti and Ram Dass). 'You're it!' can definitely point the way to being 'unstuck'. I don't have 'a way with words' like Alan does, so all I can say is listen to Alan and see for yourself.

Alan Watts delivery is so entertaining you almost forget that you are learning. The rhythm and style in which he presents the material makes you feel like you're listening to a symphony rather than a lecture. I highly recommend this to anyone.

Alan is by far my favorite philosopher, author. He had a way to him that really comes off the pages of his books when you read them. But peraonally I adore hearing his lectures and the heart he poured in everything he said never gets old. The honesty in how he would analyze things is what has kept me a true fan; lack of a better word. If your looking for profound, sincere and clear understanding of things, of yourself and so on this is the book. I enjoy reading but I cant stress it enough how much I love hearing Alan speak his rationale which I have adopted.

If you are a fan of Alan Watts, this is an absolute MUST HAVE. I have heard pieces of this lecture from videos on youtube, but nothing beats the full audio. I have audible.com & an open credit so I figured why not. One of the best purchases of my life. Nothing is better than Watts laugh & articulation. If you thought of getting this then think no longer & just do it ! I love to turn it on & just sleep to it, eat breakfast with it, and share with my family/friends. Alan Watts has made such a huge impact on my life.

If your mind is open and you're ready for "answers" this is for you. As the person who recommended this to me said, "Are you ready to have your mind blown?"

I Heard You Paint Houses: Frank

Review

“Sheeran’s confession that he killed Hoffa in the manner described in the book is supported by the forensic evidence, is entirely credible, and solves the Hoffa mystery.”  — Michael Baden M.D., former Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York“I’m fully convinced – now – that Sheeran was in fact the man who did the deed. And I’m impressed, too, by the book’s readability and by its factual accuracy in all areas on which I’m qualified to pass judgment. Charles Brandt has solved the Hoffa mystery.” —Professor Arthur Sloane, author of Hoffa“Sometimes you can believe everything you read.” — William “Big Billy” D’Elia, successor to Russell Bufalino as godfather of the Bufalino crime family“My source in the Bufalino family . . . read I Heard You Paint Houses. All the Bufalino guys read it. This old-time Bufalino guy told me he was shocked. He couldn’t believe Sheeran confessed all that stuff to [Brandt]. It’s all true.” — New York Police Department organized crime homicide detective Joseph Coffey“If the made men Brandt rubbed up against during his five years with Sheeran suspected what Sheeran was confessing to him on tape, they’d both have been promptly whacked.” — Joe Pistone, retired FBI deep undercover agent and the author of Donnie BrascoI Heard You Paint Houses “gives new meaning to the term ‘guilty pleasure.’ It promises to clear up the mystery of Hoffa’s demise, and appears to do so. Sheeran not only admits he was in on the hit, he says it was he who actually pulled the trigger — and not just on Hoffa but on dozens of other victims, including many, he alleges, dispatched on Hoffa’s orders. This last seems likely to spur a reappraisal of Hoffa’s career. . . . Sheeran is Old School, and his tale is admirably free of self-pity and self-aggrandizement. Without getting all Oprah about it, he admits he was an alcoholic and a lousy father. His business was killing people, and . . . he did it with little muss, fuss or introspection.’’ — Bryan Burrough, author of Public Enemies, in The New York Times Book Review“One of Sheeran’s virtues was his gift as a storyteller; one of his flaws was his tendency to murder, in mobster jargon, ‘to paint houses.’ . . . Although he professed his loyalty to Hoffa – he said on one occasion, ‘I’ll be a Hoffa man ‘til they pat my face with a shovel and steal my cufflinks’ − Sheeran acknowledged that he was the one who killed the Teamsters boss. . . . On July 30, 1975, Hoffa disappeared. Sheeran explains how he did it, in prose reminiscent of the best gangster films.”  — Associated Press “I Heard You Paint Houses is the best Mafia book I ever read, and believe me, I read them all. It’s so authentic.” — Steven Van Zandt, featured actor, “Silvio Dante,” in The Sopranos and musician in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band “Told with such economy and chilling force as to make The Sopranos suddenly seem overwrought and theatrical.” —New York Daily News“Is Sheeran believable? Very . . . and ‘I Heard You Paint Houses’ is a very enjoyable book.” —Trial Magazine“A page-turning account of one man’s descent into the mob.” —Delaware News Journal“A terrific read.” —Kansas City Star

From the Inside Flap

"I heard you paint houses" are the first words Jimmy Hoffa ever spoke to Frank "the Irishman" Sheeran. To paint a house is to kill a man. The paint is the blood that splatters on the walls and floors. In the course of nearly five years of recorded interviews Frank Sheeran confessed to Charles Brandt that he handled more than twenty-five hits for the mob, and for his friend Hoffa. Sheeran learned to kill in the U.S. Army, where he saw an astonishing 411 days of active combat duty in Italy during World War II. After returning home he became a hustler and hit man, working for legendary crime boss Russell Bufalino. Eventually he would rise to a position of such prominence that in a RICO suit then-U.S. Attorney Rudy Giuliani would name him as one of only two non-Italians on a list of 26 top mob figures. When Bufalino ordered Sheeran to kill Hoffa, he did the deed, knowing that if he had refused he would have been killed himself. Sheeran's important and fascinating story includes new information on other famous murders, and provides rare insight to a chapter in American history. Charles Brandt has written a page-turner that is destined to become a true crime classic.

The print in this book is large as advertised. This hard cover has a good, sturdy binding. It's a smooth flowing read.Sheeran's words are in quotations while Brandt's words are in bold type. The Prologue in this book lays the groundwork for how Frank Sheeran eventually came to confess his involvement in the Hoffa disappearance. He explains why there would be no body to recover and how trusted people close to Jimmy Hoffa had to be involved. The information in this book verifies information in other mafia related books that I have read. Some examples:Hoffa's claim to possess audio sex tapes involving Bobby Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe.Joe Kennedy recruiting Sam Giancana to steal the 1960 Presidential election.Multiple mafia figures and their involvment in the assassination of John F Kennedy.A lot of the organised crime figures in this book are mentioned in most JFK assassination books. It's interesting that Frank Sheeran claimed that he deilvered three rifles to David Ferrie in Baltimore shortly before the assassination.Jimmy Hoffa strenuously opposed the mafia's aiding Kennedy in the election. He was right in the end.The Nixon administration's corruption was detailed. One of the bigger contributing factors in Jimmy Hoffa's murder was the access to Teamster funds.Hoffa apparently was not as lenient as Frank Fitzsimmons in collecting debts. This book is believable to me.Each individual reader will have to assess for themselves whether this book is credible. It's one of the best mafia related books that I have read so far.

Excellent book - I recommend it for some readers and with some qualifications. Two key interests a reader should have to enjoy this book immensely are appreciation of history and a curiosity for criminal stories and organized crime. Amazingly, there's a great deal of US history here beyond Jimmy Hoffa. The central question is: did Sheeran (the main character) lie to the author? Or is it all true? There's no middle ground. If Sheeran lied on some aspects, then we should not trust any other aspects. To believe Sheeran is to believe: (i) Sheeran killed Hoffa; (ii) the mob assassinated JFK; (iii) the mob threw the 1960 election to JFK by vote fraud in Illinois; (iv) JFK's motive in Bay of Pigs was payback to organized crime to recoup lost assets in Cuba; (v) Joe Kennedy maintained his mob ties his entire life and implied to crime figures that he could "control" his sons JFK and Bobby; (vi) Jimmy Hoffa ordered many violent illegal activities including murder; (vii) the mob made cash bribes to John Mitchell - Nixon's attorney general; (viii) Mitchell actually accepted one such bribe at the front door of his own home. Can all of this really be true? It would be SHOCKING! So I have trouble believing it. One further draw for "I Heard You Paint Houses" is that the main character is such a sociopath. In almost all books, the reader wants to identify with the main character. I sense that the author TRIES to get the reader to identify with Sheeran. Perhaps the author himself bonded with Sheeran. That's bizarre - Sheeran was evil incarnate with a functional and handsome exterior.

Thank you, Mr. brandt, for solving the Hoffa disappearance. In 1975 I was a twenty-six year old man living just a little over a mile from the death house. Little did I know that as I wondered for the next forty years if there would ever be a death-bed confession that would solve the mystery. There was, and it did. One more thing off my bucket list, as I get closer and closer to kicking my own. Great book, great read. If this is an area of interest to you, I have only two words: Buy it. I give it five stars, only because I'm not allowed to give it six.

My review contains spoilers about this non-fiction title. BEWARE.I read this book for two reasons: The first is because I'm always drawn to mafia-related tales, especially true ones, and secondly, since Martin Scorsese is turning it into a Netflix film with Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Al Pacino all starring in the three main roles. The story of Frank Sheeran is an interesting, dark, and sometimes brutal thing. This man killed everything from Nazis to gangsters, and in large quantities. The book starts with a riveting chapter that sets Frank up the night before Jimmy Hoffa is killed. It had me thinking that Frank knew who did it, but had nothing to do with the actual murder, and boy was I wrong. The book cuts away from Hoffa's murder, and takes us into Frank's childhood, and then into his 411 days of combat service during World War II. The days Frank learned how to carry out the order to murder without hesitation, and the days where Frank learned how to outlive everyone around him. I found Frank's tour of duty to be some of the most thought-provoking stuff, but I can understand why it was hard for him to discuss, especially since he was in combat for longer than the majority of humans ever in war. There's a lot of Teamsters Union talk, and while some of it would boil down to violence, it was mostly just a bunch of names being thrown around, and elections of local unions being discussed. These parts of the book are probably the least interesting, but Frank Sheeran loved The Teamsters, and was a proud member. It was probably the thing he was most proud of in his entire life.Hoffa's trials against Bobby Kennedy take up a large portion of the book, but Frank didn't have much of a perspective other than repeating some of Jimmy Hoffa's quotes from that time. It's a shame we'll never get to read a new book with interviews from Jimmy on this subject. His rivalry with Bobby Kennedy was an epic American tale in itself.Things started to get truly griping around the time Jimmy Hoffa went to "school", as Frank Sheeran referred to prison. Hoffa's hatred for being inside, and how he lost his grip on The Teamsters, which eventually led to him losing his grip on reality setup the climax, as Frank finally returned to his story from the start of the book. Frank made it to Detroit the day Jimmy Hoffa was killed...I think I was pulling for Frank more before I knew about him being in on Jimmy Hoffa's death, despite knowing he'd killed dozens of other people. Something about killing the man he claims to have respected so much, and been such close friends with, makes it hard to relate to the man. You always hear things about the mafia sending your closest friend to whack you, and in Frank's version of the Hoffa hit, that's how it went down.Frank mentioned Giants' Stadium, which was a place you'd always hear rumored to be Hoffa's burial ground when you grew up a Giants fan. He squashed that rumor, like a few others over the years, but the details of Jimmy Hoffa's last moments were a lot less extravagant. There's stuff to be taken away from those moments, but "I Heard You Paint Houses" really left an impression on me concerning Russell Buffalino. You hear a lot of old gangster names thrown around over the years, but I don't think I've ever had a conversation with a person that involved them dropping Russell Buffalino's name. According to the book, he was the closest living representation of Vito Corleone from "The Godfather", and Russell had final say on "The Godfather" film's script all the way back in the 70's. Another tidbit from this book about Godfather, Al Martino, who plays Johnny Fontane in the film, was actually the basis for the character, and not Frank Sinatra. Not only that, but Francis Ford Coppola didn't want Al Martino for the role, but Russell Buffalino made some calls, and it was so.Frank Sheeran went out by starving himself to death in a nursing home. Robert De Niro is going to be playing him in the movie, and while I hear there's going to be a lot of de-aging going on, I honestly think this flick would've worked better as a Marty/Leo team-up, but what do I know?Charles Brandt goes on to talk about how his book was well received, and most of Frank's tales were proven true, despite common beliefs before the book was published in the early 2000's (I.E.: Crazy Joey Gallo hit). Apparently, he even became friends with the actual "Donnie Brasco", and they have worked together on other stuff. If you're interested in the true crimes of the American Mafia than "I Heard You Paint Houses" is the exact book you need to add to your reading list. Frank Sheeran interacted with everyone who was anyone during the beginning of the end of "This Thing of Ours", and all as an outsider, so it's a rare perspective.VERDICT: READ
