Okay, so, as an Elementary art teacher, I've seen quite a few children's books cross my desk, and many of them have been cute or beautifully illustrated while getting a great message across to kids.Maybe I was just expecting more from Pearl, and am more critical of it because of it, but I can't quite figure what age range would best benefit from this book.For Kindergarteners, the message seems a bit vague to me, and while the pictures are pretty, it just doesn't seem to me that much effort went into creating them, from an artist's perspective. For my older kids, there just aren't enough words to make this story engaging enough for them, even though they'd be better able to grasp the subtleties of the message.Like I said, this book is just "meh" to me. I feel as if more effort should've gone into it across the board before publication.

The illustrations in this book were all done with Prismacolor pencils on Bristol paper, which gives them a beautiful organic feel. They're pretty simple, with most pages having only one or two elements to focus on, with the sea in the background. The whole book is about 360-370 words by my count, so it's an easy read aimed at early readers.There are some parts of the story that I think an be a bit confusing. For example, the introduction to Pearl: "In the vast sea of blue, some mermaids watched over the waves breaking upon the endless beaches. Some kept an eye on the great coral reefs. Some tended to the towering forests of kelp rising from the ocean floor. Some guarded the giants of the deep. And Pearl deeply yearned to be one of them." Wait, what? She wanted to be a giant of the deep? Or she wanted to be one of the mermaids who guarded them? Or she wanted to be any one of the types of mermaid? I realize it's supposed to be the latter; it may seem nit-picky but I think that could have been re-worded to avoid ambiguity, especially as this is aimed at very young readers.The pearl that Pearl ends up watching over rises up and turns, for some reason, into [spoiler alert!] the moon. That isn't explicitly explained in the text but it's indicated in the illustrations. I didn't really care for this ending. Early readers tend to be literal minded, so my son's first question was "why did the pearl turn into the moon?". I feel like the book would have been more interesting if the pearl were just a real pearl and didn't magically turn into the moon. What's going to happen when Pearl creates another pearl? Will there be two moons?I'm probably being too critical. My son enjoys looking at the pictures and reading the words. It's a pretty book with a nice message. Obviously, the message is that caring for small things is important work and can bring light and joy into the world, but you may have to explain that to your young reader because the message may not be obvious to them.

This is why my four year olds dream of mermaids. The imagery in this book is absolutely beautiful. The artwork is masterfully done in a soft dream like ocean. The words and phrasing are actually comforting as I read aloud to my children. The pages are thick and velvety smooth which works perfectly with the pictures. Not only did my children love this book, but so did I.Pearl is a sweet little mermaid surrounded by grown-up mermaids with very big and fantastical jobs. She longs to be a caretaker of the deep just like they are. She asks her mother if she can help take care of the ocean as well and her mother agrees and tasks her with a job. With Pearl's elation she becomes lighter and lighter until she breaches the service and sits on the beach with her mother. Her mother gives her a single grain of sand and dashes Pearl's hopes of an important job. As her excitement deflates it drags her down to the bottom of the ocean again. She is determined not to let her mother down and takes great care of her little grain of sand. In the end, we all are inspired and learn a lesson that young readers can relate to and carry with them.I have read this book to my little ones so many times I can almost recite the words to each page. The more we look at these fantastic illustrations we notice subtle nuances in each picture. If you look hard, you'll find little mermaids in places that you didn't notice were there the last time you read it. That in itself makes it a little more special. This book has a special place on my children's bookshelf reserved for their very favorites.

Let me say that I did enjoy the book and would recommend it without reservation if you are trying to understand the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO). If you are a newcomer to the ontological world, I would not recommend. The first few chapters set the stage for understanding ontology but are, in my opinion, slightly convoluted and mix concepts that should be separated. Philosophical ontology is different than information science ontology for a good reason. While they are complementary, they are not equivalent. I would have liked to have seen more formal ontological framework building using FOPL. Within the description of BFO, it would have been nice to see formal DL syntax vs word statements. Overall, the book seemed to be an advertisement for BFO alone. While BFO has its uses, it is presumptuous to make a broad assertion that it can and should be used in all cases.

A superb monograph that collects material previously available only from journal articles and expository videos. Tremendously helpful on a project of mine. I had access to a version through a university library, but I purchased the Kindle edition here because the formatting is much better for an eReader. Like other "mathy" books, there were some issues with the Kindle display of figures and tables, but this wasn't severe enough to affect my ability to understand the material. The best single reference I am aware of for anyone interested in the BFO approach to computational ontologies.

Review - Building ontologies with basic formal ontology [originally published in Oil IT Journal (N° 3 2016)]Today's linked open data has resulted in a 'hairball' of incompatible data sets (which was actually the problem the semantic web set out to solve!) To be interoperable, an ontology needs an overarching 'basic formal ontology' (the USGS has one) as is explained in this ambitious new book.Building ontologies with basic formal ontology* (Bobfo) is a 200 page introduction to the subject by Robert Arp, Barry Smith and Andrew Spear.* While ontology in its broad sense, the theory of what exists, is all-encompassing and philosophical in scope, Bobfo focuses on analyzing the ‘information domain’ with an intended application in IT and data modeling. The ontologist is therefore a journeyman modeler who can identify and extract the essence of data, relationships and indeed, everything else in a field of activity. In the case of Bobfo’s authors this is medicine and the biological sciences, but the approach is intended to have application everywhere.To understand the basic formal ontology itself we would recommend viewing co-author Smith’s video which succinctly explains the failure of the semantic web, linked open data (LOD) and ontology to date. Smith categorizes the much-vaunted constellation of semantic LOD as a ‘hairball’ from which information can only be extracted with considerable manual effort. The BFO sets out to fix linked data’s ‘anarchy and chaos’ with domain-neutral standards for building ontologies, shared by all.Bobfo defines an ontology as follows, ‘a representational artefact, comprising a taxonomy as a proper part, whose representations are intended to designate some combination of universals, defined classes and certain relations between them.’ A taxonomy is then defined as a simple hierarchy while ‘universals,’ and synonyms ‘classes,’ and ‘types’ are defined as groups of the entities in the world that is being described.As you will have gathered this is a pretty dense oeuvre as perhaps befits a field so close to philosophy. One page 6 we are plunged into a discussion on terminology research, on how the ‘concept orientation’ of ISO, the international standards association was derived from the ‘phenomenonalist’ ideas of the Vienna Circle. This approach has been replaced by the ‘realist orientation.’ The realists downplay the ‘ideas in people’s heads’ to focus exclusively on ‘labels that represent entities in reality.’Following two chapters on best principles for ontology design, the book gets down to business with the BFO itself. The BFO is a small, top-level (a.k.a. upper level) ontology designed to support data integration in scientific research. It addresses the time-dependent nature of measurement by distinguishing between a continuant and an occurrence. Other BFO concepts include role, disposition, boundary, spatial region and relation. These get rather thorough treatment, with erudite and interesting asides such as a digression on Arthur Eddington’s two tables.The rubber hits the road in chapter 8 describing the BFO at work. Concretely this means the use of the web ontology language OWL, the W3C’s resource description framework RDF and the ontologist’s favorite tool of the trade Protégé. A short section on ‘facilitating interoperability’ outlines the potential benefits, with a pointer to the work of the Open biological foundry, an ‘expanding virtual framework for navigating massive amounts of biological and clinical data.’BFO’s users are mostly in biosciences as shown on the Ifomis website. In our quick spin through the list we found ontologies for email, economics and petrochemicals. But not all appear to be maintained, far from it. One noteworthy use case is the USGS that has leveraged the BFO in its surface water ontology.Bobfo underscores the weakness of current domain-specific attempts at semantics and enumerates many of the modelers’ pitfalls. In the end, the success or otherwise of the BFO approach depends on whether the benefits that accrue from decomposing a specific domain into its ontological components exceed the considerable intellectual effort that this requires. About the Author

Arriving in California from Marrakesh in 1985 to go to college, a homesick young Mourad Lahlou began to channel memories of watching his mother and aunts as they prepared traditional Moroccan dishes at home. He started to cook for himself, then for friends, and then for friends of friends. He completed a master’s degree in macroeconomics, but the lure of the kitchen pulled him from his doctorate, and he opened his first restaurant, in San Rafael, California, in 1997. He then opened the decidedly modern Aziza, named after his mother, in San Francisco in 2001, to international acclaim. In 2009, he won Iron Chef America by the largest margin in the history of the show.

This is an outstanding book, offering an authentic take on cooking Moroccan food in the USA. The author is a Moroccan native with an almost Zen-like take on the essence of Moroccan food without access to a Moroccan souk. The chapter on couscous alone is worth the purchase price and more.It is on a par, IMO, although in a different and definitely more modern way, to Paula Wolford's tour de force on the subject, Couscous and other good food from Morocco, which I personally own and use regularly.Mourad's New Moroccan should be a serious contender for a James Beard awardMajor props to Chef Lahlou, and thank you for the wonderful meals!

I bought this book several months ago and browsed it when I got it. Lovely photos, introductions to the flavors of Moroccan food - such as Preserved Lemons, Ras al Hanous spice mix, Warqa, etc - which I anticipated. Reviewing the recipes, I noticed that Mr. Lahlou takes liberties with the traditions of Morocco, while still being respectful of the flavors, textures and vibrancy of what is perhaps my favourite cuisine.I put the book down and did not think about it again for some time. When I picked it up and read it in earnest, I am completely amazed at both the complexity and thought that is contained in the recipes. Each flavor leading to another, blending techniques of Morocco with the capacities of most (good to excellent) home cooks. Make no mistake: this is not a book for beginners. Many of the recipes require several steps in the preparation (making the spices, salting/marinating and resting meats overnight) or are quite straight-forward but have exceptionally complex accompaniments (Braised Beef Cheeks is quick enough to cook, but preparing the meat requires forethought of a day or so and the accompanying Carrot Jam takes 10 hours to complete). For those willing to invest the time, however, the rewards are exceptional.Multi-layered and multi-dimensional food with an incredible punch are within your grasp. Food that is beautiful and yet even more delicious. I find that many of the techniques and ideas that Mr. Lahlou has incorporated in the book are refinements of my already aggressive home-kitchen skills - and ones which I am glad to add to my skill set moving forward.I am grateful to have this book as an addition to my collection of Moroccan cooking. If you are seeking a compendium of traditional Moroccan recipes, you should look to Paula Wolfert. However, if you are adventurous and up to the work that such food entails, Mr. Mourad in his New Moroccan offers you a glimpse of the next level of Moroccan cooking. Buckle your seatbelts! It's going to be a delicious ride.

Obsessed. I live near Lahlou's restaurant Aziza, and it deserves all of the accolades it has received. If you live in, near, or have a chance to visit SF, Aziza is a must.Some of the dishes found on the menu (which rotates frequently) are in this book. I particularly fell in love with a piquillo almond spread at the restaurant and was delighted the recipe was in this cookbook. The spread and the accompanying flatbread turned out just as they tasted at the restaurant, a testament to the author and not my skills as a cook.The stories about Morocco and the passion the chef exhibits with respect to spices is inspiring. An enjoyable read and beautiful cookbook. Just wonderful.

My family and I have been going to Aziza (Mourad's restaurant) since 2007 and have savored every mouthful. We have witnessed its evolution from a nice neighborhood place with hearty soulful Moroccan food to the gastronomic creative force it is today, without losing its integrity or forsaking its best dishes like the basteeya or lamb shanks. So, I was thrilled when I received this beautiful cookbook as a birthday present last week. And I have barely put it down since then (only to make lamb shanks, spiced prunes, preserved lemons, etc...). Not only are the completed dishes delectable, but Mourad's methodical instruction is exquisitely precise and in the best format I've seen in any cookbook (and I have at least 50). And includes wonderful technique tips as well, such as how to properly handle phyllo so it doesn't dry up or curl when cooked. His description of the origin of many of the dishes and his childhood memories of learning to cook from his grandparents will transport you there.We all have favorite recipes we go to for comfort foods and other ones for entertaining; the recipes in this book hit both categories at once.

book arrived quickly and looks like new......it is a lovely book to have on a coffee table and interesting historically...and tho it is beautifully written it is a bit ... too complex for me to be used as a cook book....that's why the 3 stars.....sorry.....

This is a beautiful book filled with personal, insider home cooking information, culture and background. I enjoyed the entire holistic approach to Moroccan cooking and the opportunity to look inside it's authenticity; beautiful photography as well. I also enjoyed trying some of the recipes, although I cut back on the amounts suggested for the spices so I could enjoy the flavor without having too much heat....a personal preference. Mourad Lahlou seems like an interesting, enchanting person and it would be a treat to someday be able to visit his restaurant. I think I'll also buy another book on cooking with the tagine but I'm glad I read this one first for all the wonderful background information.

One day I'm going to understand what this book is talking about if it kills me and it will probably kill me.

Let me first start by saying that I am a self-taught fly fisherman and without this book I wouldn't know half of what I know. The book starts with a section about how trout feed including how they move in the water column and why they find specific areas of the stream attractive. Next, the book talks about the different kinds of streams (freestone versus spring creeks), their characteristics, and why it is important not to try to fish the two different types in the same way. In this section Rosenbauer also talks about fish distribution in the different type of streams and where you may find them. The last several chapters of the book are dedicated to the different types of flies: streamers, nymphs and wet flies, and dry flies. Each type of fly has it's own chapter and the author covers what type of flies have worked best for him, why, their characteristics, and then several methods of fishing the broad category of fly. Each chapter on the flies is incredibly thorough and I really enjoyed hearing about the authors experience with a few flies of each type and how they have worked for him. Finally, the last chapter of the book is dedicated to approaching trout and how to avoid spooking them in those tough slow pools.Overall, the book includes excellent information grounded in science. It isn't heresy with a bunch of stuff just thrown together into a book. The author does like to tell his anecdotal stories, but if you're a fly fisherman get used to hearing them because everyone has their fishing stories. This is probably one of the best fly fishing books that I have read and as I said, I am self-taught and without this book I wouldn't know nearly as much as the little bit that I do know.

I would never consider myself and expert fly-fisherman by any means, but I try to get out 1 or 2 times a week from March until November here in Montana. Overall this book is a great general read, but it really helped me freshen up on my fishing game, to the point that I consistently catch fish every time I go out. I self taught myself how to fly fish ten years ago, and since then there has always been gaps in how I went about fishing. I went from having the "it's all about the luck" outlook on fly fishing, to knowing if I put the work in I will catch fish every time. The biggest help I took out of it was really learning how to read the water when I'm in my drift boat, and helping my friends/family get in a position where they really have to mess up not to pull a trout out of a hole. If you're like me, somewhere in the middle between learning how to even cast a fly rod and checking under rocks to see what insects are showing up that time of the year, get this book you won't regret it.

Unlike other books that claim to the the "Ultimate" book on fly fishing, this one focuses on trout, focuses on trout habitat, focuses a bit on entomology, focuses a bit on casting techniques, focuses a bit on time of day - it's fewer than 200 pages long, but it is jam-packed with information. This not a field guide and it's not full of minutia. It's all practical stuff. It's the kind of book you'll pull out again and again as you try to use your mighty human brain to capture an animal with a brain the size of a pea. Just kidding.This is almost a recipe book for trout fishing. And if you have only one trout fishing book, this should be it. This is a case when tmi is a GOOD thing! Seriously.

The best trout fishing guide I have ever read. Been trout fishing for 28 years and have learned more from this book than I ever did flailing the waters in Washington Idaho and Montana.

Great insights and techniques, some of which are counter to common beliefs -- or even counterintuitive -- but are then clearly explained. Things you might learn on your own, but only after many years. Very helpful. Needs to be reread because not all of it can stick otherwise. Good reminders too.

A great perspective on how to approach waters where it's not obvious what the fish are eating. I've read other Tom Rosenbauer stuff and he is the real deal. In this book he describes techniques he and others use to develop a plan of attack when the fish are not giving great clues. Really an interesting read.

This was the first book I’ve read by Tom Rosenbauer after listening to the Orvis podcast for a while, and I have to admit that it lived up to my high expectations. Tom manages to present a mountain of information in a way that’s both informative and engaging. I’ll be picking up some more of his books in the future!

This is the book for the library of anyone who hunts trout. Well written, concise and extremely readable. I keep it on the table by my favorite chair and refer to it daily (when I am at our lake cabin) I really should have gotten a 2nd copy but I will pack this copy when we head back to Idaho this Spring, I don't want think "what was that I read?" while I'm in Idaho and the book is in Texas.
